I think this is the first episode with Mary and Brandan that I actually liked. I think this is the advice that Mary needs to hear. That old school "pretend nothing bad is happening and we're upstanding members of our community" from her grandparents doesn't work for her generation. She seemed to genuinely appreciate Brandan's mom's advice.

I’m beyond over using a rough upbringing as an excuse to abuse others. There comes a point you’re an adult and you get to choose who you are. Mary is simply abusive period.
Whether you're "over" it or not, that's just how some people cope. It's not right, but that's how it works. Mary needs years and years of therapy and room to work on herself, get to the root of her own problems. Whether she takes those steps or not, well, that's another kettle of fish.
I doubt it’s as simple as just getting over it. You have years of learned bad habits to work on. You comment reminds me of when I have really bad anxiety attacks and someone who’s ignorant about anxiety disorder tells me “just calm down.” It’s not as simple as that and I wish it was, but it’s years of meditation and expensive therapy. It takes a LOT of money and patience to get through something that deeply ingrained into your brain. Anyone who can get better by themselves are super lucky they were born with strong will.

Angela seems like a really cool lady. regardless of her past mistakes, she is kind-hearted and she is very wise. i also love how she is one of the few western tourists on this show to visit Southeast Asia and have a positive, adventurous attitude about trying new foods and experiencing different customs. it’s not easy, but she is doing her best and i appreciate that so much. you can see that her patient, down-to-earth attitude is earning Mary’s respect. most of the farangs on this show behave so atrociously abroad and Angela is a refreshing exception.
Lots of trauma circling around this family. Sadly, the cycle will only continue with the newborn because Brandon and Mary are still children and haven’t done “the work” to break the cycle; they’ll be in survival mode just trying to make ends meet forever so they’ll never overcome it
Mary has very severe border line personality disorder, which isn't what people think it really is. As someone who was also previously digagnosed with BPD, it has to do with abandonment and unhealthy attatchements, and almost all people who have BPD were abandoned by one or both parents, which tracks with Mary. It seems that Brandon may also have an unhealthy attatchment style, and both people having this extreme attatchment style exacerbates the disorder. The fear is so intense, if you don't already have problems within the relationship, you cause them just to prove you're right, and that parter really was unfaithful and was going to leave. this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy..... as if you are that intensely insecure, the other person will absolutely eventually leave or find someone else. Mary needs therapy, but she also just needs someone who will help her feel secure, not Brandon, who is also extremely insecure. I hope they both get help because you can grow out of BPD when you no longer meet the criteria.
BPD is not JUST abandonment from parents. It can be from anyone. Abandonment issues from a long term relationship you thought would last. Etc. it also isn’t limited to PHYSICAL abandonment. It also has to do with EMOTIONAL abandonment. Which parents or partners don’t necessarily have to PHYSICALLY abandon you but not give you the love or attention you were seeking.
I’ve been thinking the same thing and it’s been a nightmare seeing all the tik tok experts label her a narcissist. She is incredibly insecure and controlling, but I think narcissist is just a popular word. I used to be able to identify with Mary’s behavior. I took my trauma out on my high school boyfriend and I learned from reflecting and from hearing people tell me that I was wrong, that I needed real help. Her behavior is very familiar to me. I hope she takes this advice to heart and TLC gets her a good specialist.

I believe Mary when she says she wants therapy. I am concerned that it will be a super, super uncomfortable process that she won't stick with - not to mention expensive. For one thing, any qualified therapist is going to eventually tap into a whole lot of pain and anger caused by the way her grandparents raised her.
Or worse- Mary will weaponize therapy as people with her type of personality tend to do, and Brendan’s life will become un unbearable hell which will break him in a way he didn’t know existed.

I was wondering, if tlc had financed Angels Deems multiple makeover surgeries, why not help this couple with the psychological they so badly need. Without it they're better off apart. I don't think the frog joke had anything to do with Brandons childhood issues. I think he was just trying to joke with her because he loves her. Since that's a dish they eat & she had never eaten it before & they had previously pulled it on him. He was trying to include her. I'm glad it went over so well. Sometimes these reviews OVER analyze things for drama. I hope she is included in the babies life. Since she's recovering & is doing well I hope she can form a good relationship with her son & new daughter in law. Its a long bumpy road.

While Brandon’s mom may have chosen drugs over him, I’d take her side WAY more than Mary’s. She came all this way to save him and she’s acting like “I made a mistaken when I was younger, don’t do what I did. You can do so much more”. All Mary is saying is “It’s it’s or your mom and you’re horrible for what you’ve done”.
I'm not fond of Mary. I think she's very aware of what she's doing. Now, whether she's doing it "on purpose" is another matter. Hear me out: It's very, VERY obvious that Mary has some deep-rooted trauma. She claimed that her parents left when she was very small, just a couple of months old and she remembers it, this is nonsense. So I think the parents left MUCH later in life than Mary is letting us believe, because even IF they left when she was small, but still young enough to remember it, she'd have had enough time to adjust. Become a normal person. My Biological mother left me when I was two years old, left me to die, basically. But I was raised by very loving people, and I adjusted just fine, did I have behavior issues? Yes, Did/do I have abandonment issues? Yes. Did I have nightmares for years about my mother abandoning me? Yes. It took me a long, long time to straighten myself out. Despite being raised by people who loved me .I'm STILL not a complete person. Don't abuse your kids, this shit sticks with us. This brings me to my ultimate point, I think Mary is in self-preservation mode, because her whole "I'm afraid of being abandoned" WHILE seemingly doing everything in her power to drive the person who cares about her the most away, is a VERY real thing. I know this all too well, I drove a lot of people away when I was younger, because "they'll just abandon me too" even though they never would have. Took many years to rebuild those relationships and some I never did.
I commend them both for accepting the fact that they need therapy, but where are they going to get it? Not many therapists in the Philippines. I would guess none on their island.

Angela is the best. I’m glad she’s changed her life and I hope she keeps it up. She’s truly a phenomenal person. She had such a great attitude exploring this rural part of the Philippines and was open…despite having to be civil, kind and empathetic to the girl that would rather alienate her son.

I believe Mary when she says she wants therapy. I am concerned that it will be a super, super uncomfortable process that she won't stick with - not to mention expensive. For one thing, any qualified therapist is going to eventually tap into a whole lot of pain and anger caused by the way her grandparents raised her.
Or worse- Mary will weaponize therapy as people with her type of personality tend to do, and Brendan’s life will become un unbearable hell which will break him in a way he didn’t know existed.

Whether it's guilt or not, Angela wants the best, not just for herself but for Brandon's fam. Mary should be very very appreciative that she has a very caring mother-in-law. I was wondering, if tlc had financed Angels Deems multiple makeover surgeries, why not help this couple with the psychological they so badly need. Without it they're better off apart. Tlc also financed "The last resort" episodes. 🤔On the other hand. I didn't notice any communication between Mary and Brandon's siblings.

I don't think the frog joke had anything to do with Brandons childhood issues. I think he was just trying to joke with her because he loves her. Since that's a dish they eat & she had never eaten it before & they had previously pulled it on him. He was trying to include her. I'm glad it went over so well. While Brandon’s mom may have chosen drugs over him, I’d take her side WAY more than Mary’s. She came all this way to save him and she’s acting like “I made a mistaken when I was younger, don’t do what I did. You can do so much more”. All Mary is saying is “It’s it’s or your mom and you’re horrible for what you’ve done”.
I'm not fond of Mary. I think she's very aware of what she's doing. Now, whether she's doing it "on purpose" is another matter.
Hear me out: It's very, VERY obvious that Mary has some deep-rooted trauma. She claimed that her parents left when she was very small, just a couple of months old and she remembers it, this is nonsense. So I think the parents left MUCH later in life than Mary is letting us believe, because even IF they left when she was small, but still young enough to remember it, she'd have had enough time to adjust. Become a normal person.
My Biological mother left me when I was two years old, left me to die, basically. But I was raised by very loving people, and I adjusted just fine, did I have behavior issues? Yes, Did/do I have abandonment issues? Yes. Did I have nightmares for years about my mother abandoning me? Yes. It took me a long, long time to straighten myself out. Despite being raised by people who loved me .I'm STILL not a complete person. Don't abuse your kids, this shit sticks with us.
This brings me to my ultimate point, I think Mary is in self-preservation mode, because her whole "I'm afraid of being abandoned" WHILE seemingly doing everything in her power to drive the person who cares about her the most away, is a VERY real thing. I know this all too well, I drove a lot of people away when I was younger, because "they'll just abandon me too" even though they never would have. Took many years to rebuild those relationships and some I never did.

Angela is the best. I’m glad she’s changed her life and I hope she keeps it up. She’s truly a phenomenal person. She had such a great attitude exploring this rural part of the Philippines and was open…despite having to be civil, kind and empathetic to the girl that would rather alienate her son.

I have started to change my opinion of Angela and I like her. She is trying so hard to make up to Brandon and he seems to like it. He does have a connection with her. Mary wears her abandonment like a badge. It's her excuse to act like a brat.
Angela didn't fail her children..... society has failed been failing n harming women for a long time believe me as a sexual abuse survivor born to a mother n grandmother that experienced the same. I called cps on myself to break the cycle of abuse n they tried to railroad me n take my son. I was determined to do all i could not to lose my son n signed my rights over to a lovely foster mom i met n we agreed to raise him together. Im better n he has no idea what abuse or neglect is n is so headstrong n confident at 14 n he loves n adores me ❤
