I haven’t been to a salon in over 12 years and I started my locs myself 10 months ago and have been self maintaining. I HATE salons. I do believe ppl have good experiences but I feel like there are more bad/mediocre than good 😭 a lot of stylists just don’t care. You pay them hundreds of dollars and they get to just do whatever to your head and to you in general. I don’t like that agreement lol

Girl l feel you. I have 2 horror stories of my 3 months loc journey which I ended a week ago because my hair started breaking. Right now I doing everything I can to make sure my hair is healthy and strong again. Another red flag 🚩 my good people is getting your hair done by someone who says they can do everything especially without proof of them having achieved any of that.

Thanks for sharing. “ They leave me for dead” have me rolling!😂. But seriously thanks for sharing, I’m a little over a year loc’d. I recently (few days ago) did my own retwist. I had a couple of not so satisfactory situation, as well as deal with scheduling conflicts. I decided to retwist my own hair and was pleasantly surprised at the results. I don’t plan on going to another stylist.

I remember I was on time for an appointment and had to wait an hour at least. It just kind of offended me that she didn't care that I was on time because I took like two buses and the train or something like that up there ... Like I made a journey and was on time 😭😭😭They literally charged a hand and a foot for starting micro or sister locs. They charged like 250-300 to start mine and they did it quick and almost like lazy like they wasn't... If anything they wanted my hair to look crazy but God is good I got used to my face... But thats the first time I got loccs in my hair period... It was like paying to sit at the wrong lunch table in school 😭😭😭😭😭😭 but anyway everyone that has done my loccs like their skilled but the actual person and karma is too much. Like my cousin's girlfriend she wanted to retwist my hair but she always says shady things and used to sleep with my dad ... Like I dont care for my hair in a traditional westernized way so dealing with people who don't understand why amla, chebe bhringraj etc is on my hair and just thinks it's dirty shouldn't touch my hair. The girl who would do it before my cousin's ex she was a hood family friend, so like her kids played with my sister's... But when my sister's spent the night her kids made them watch Chucky. I don't like that

    • @OrganicAlumination
      @OrganicAlumination ปีที่แล้ว +1

Always remember the starter sister loccs it was going to be a thousand and then the micro locs was like 750 or 850... I became disillusioned and understood cuz it was a shady energy about it towards me anyway , they treated me like I was an outsider... But I saw a woman on TH-cam who was a hair stylist and she was doing sisterlocks and micro locs for like less than my locks actually costed.... I was so shocked like I thought it was normal.. I'm grateful to God that it happened the way it did because I appreciate my hair for its size now like it don't have to be more conforming into the vain consumerist society... Like it's okay for my hair to be bigger

    Thanks for sharing your journey!
The first “Loctician” I went to started my locs via the two strand twist method. I thought she was pretty good to start, EXCEPT she NEVER responded to text messages or calls. That, to me was a strong yellow flag, but I ignored it because I didn’t have a backup to go to yet.
When I went back for my retwist, she ended up fired because
    1. She put the stickiest stuff in my hair
    2. She told me not to use any water on my hair at all to maintain or moisturize
    3. She literally started clipping the ends of my twists and where she said she saw loose hair! I ended up with clumps of hair coming off the ends of my healthy hair! Like WHAT THE WHAT?!?!?
Anyhoo, I found an amazing Loctician in Houston that restored my hair and it’s the heaviest it’s ever been. I’m five months loced and loving the journey!

I've been a DIYer on my locs since the beginning but occasionally I would go to this popular salon in NYC (they also have a location in atl) for special services like dyes and crochet retwists. After about the 3rd time, I left the salon with a crochet retwist so tight my scalp was sore FOR WEEKS. It was then that I realized they were stylists, not loctitians bc they'll whatever just to make ur hair look good for their IG. Really sucks bc they have great customer service but too much negligence when it comes to quality SMH

    • @tyrathethird

It’s definitely hard to find a knowledgeable + professional loctician anywhere these days. Some chick I found on IG started my first set of locs; I told her what parting style I wanted, and she made it seem like she knew exactly what I was talking about. I ended up with rectangle, square, rhombus, and parallelogram-shaped parts all throughout my head. 🥴 My updo’s looked crazy as hell. I went to another so-called loctician who used weave thread, wax, and hair spray on my locs while styling them. 🫠 She also sat me under the dryer for an hour unnecessarily, just so she could go outside to her car and smoke a blunt. AND I had to check her because she tried to wash my hair with scalding hot water. 🗑️ I let another person start my second set of locs, but I’ve been doing my own hair ever since. It takes longer, but I’d rather run the risk of messing up my own hair for free than pay someone else to jack my locs up.

Hi Tyra! LOVE the storytimes! I had a similar experience to the one you had with the second stylist you mentioned. She would keep pushing my time back and would get angry if I ever came 5 minutes early (she said she might need that 5 minutes to do something else 😒😒) she did hair out of her home and a wash was included in the price of a retwist. I showed up to get the full service (wash included) and she seemed annoyed that I didn't wash my hair before coming. I then had to WAIT FOR HER TO WASH A SINK FULL OF DISHES before she could wash my hair. I must be a glutton for pain because I went back to her again! This time, she was on the phone with someone talking about how she doesn't like when her loc clients don't book together (at the time my sister and I were her ONLY loc clients 😑) WHY WOULD WE NEED TO BOOK TOGETHER MA'AM?? I was SUPER annoyed and haven't been back to her since. I'm disappointed because she is a young talented woman trying to get her business off the ground, but she has ZERO people skills and was very unprofessional. Mind you I always tipped her well because I respected her hustle at such a young age. Needless to say, I will be doing my own locs from now on! 💛

I’m in Marietta, I know your pain. I’m 5yrs in on my locs.
My first set of locs: I don’t know what they used but it gave me so much build up. When I washed my hair, gray gunk was coming out of my hair when squeezed my locs. I just had to cut them I couldn’t deal with it.
2nd set: the new person kept cut my locs loose hair and it made my hair look good. Until my hair was thinning a lot.
3rd set: moved to Iowa, found good loc technician to start my locs. a little flaky but no buildup. then moved back to Marietta. And found a new person. She’s great! No flakes and no buildup. She knows what’s doing and can do everything

My experience with a Loctician or I would say, probably now knowing that she was probably a loc stylist, because she also did other types of hairstyles as well, and did beautiful work according to her Instagram page. I had my locks installed traditional locks and she did a good job of doing so but prior to installing the locks. She took me to her wash bowl and wash my hair so vigorously that I know, she definitely tore my hair out because she combed through it, so roughly at the bowl, and I have very fine very easily breakable hair That I have never washed my hair that vigorously or comb through my hair that vigorously wide wet. So I think I started off with my hair being totally damaged after just the wash. She put the locks in that went well but then when it came to her Twisting my hair let’s say five and nine weeks later she could not figure out what my hair was doing in It’s pre-locking State that she took a comb to it and tore out hair, trying to make it do a certain way that she thought my lock should look. I begin to think that this lady does not know what this kind of hair looks like when it’s trying to lock she was used to what they call for see Hair possibly. Needless to say I never went back. I learned how to re-twist my own hair by watching and going to TH-cam University lol. I have now been re-twisting my own hair for the last three years and five months.

You're paying them to destroy your hair. I only get a retwist when I have an occasion.

“Destroy” is dramatic lol. There are some locticians who do amazing work.

@@tyrathethird The longevity of your hair is based on your roots because they have to carry more weight overtime. What happens when you bend a credit card back and forth? No matter how strong the plastic, it will break. The loctitians are the ones doing the bending.
