I’ve finally found time to edit this video from a couple of jobs done in 2016. I have to admit that I don’t like narrating over videos because it is so time consuming. This video probably took a couple of days to edit! It’s a lovely sunny day here today, I hope everyone has a great Sunday ;-)
Ultimate Handyman...Thank you...very handy tutorial. I just wanted to enquire which primer to use?...my wall paper is patterned similar to the patterned one in your video. And does the zinsser perma paint come in various colours..or just the white.
Thanks for the time and effort in edition and doing the actual job, I was told many moons ago by a very old decorator to never paint over old wallpaper but the results was very surprising. Have a nice weekend fella.
Thanks, I was selling the house and didn't want to waste time stripping off the paper which is why it was easier and cheaper to prime it and blitz the lot with some neutral colours. Thanks for the comment, I hope you have a great weekend too ;-)
I’ve never thought of painting wallpaper. Always seemed “wrong” or “lazy” but I’ve learnt that there are times when this is the best solution. Great video. As always . 👍
Thanks Graham, the kitchen was in a rented flat for the mother in law so there was no way I was stripping the paper there. The second property was a rental property that I decided to sell, so a lick of paint was the best option. Thanks for the comment
Oh, babe, been doing it for decades. Just make sure you seal off edges with shellac based primer first to avoid edges rolling up. Water-based paints will dis-adhere the edges if you don't.
Christ broham. You gonna get tennis elbow. 4" Roller is never adequate. But cheers mate. Good work. I can appreciate the disdain for editing. I've been using You tube for communicating with clients and am toying with the idea of editing and sharing more. Keep up the good work chief.
I have used Loctite water resistant superglue for seam repair. Gripper acrylic primer with good results in 3 houses. Zinsser 123 is easier to obtain so I will try it. So thankful to be able to paint over wallpaper in this current house to prep for sale. However if I can help it I will not purchase another house with wallpaper. It has really set me back in time and other resources. In a few years we may get an RV that will require painting wallpaper as they are all so dated. If you paint them light colors inside they sell fast. Same with houses. Thank you for your help. Good video.
Not all wall paper is put on the same, as people usually diy it. Mine happens to be glued to the sheetrock itself. It will not come off properly. If it is over paint it may be possible to remove it. If sheetrock wasn't so dam expensive now, I'd say to just rerock it. Thats what I'm going to do, because i just discovered that the sheetrock is smaller than 1/2in. I think its 3/8, but i haven't measured yet and could be 1/4in. Either way, it's too small for my liking
Superb video as always. Thank you, Ultimate 'andyman, for proving possible things the arm-chair experts say aren't. You have surely saved more money time & temper all over the world than I would have thought possible. Cheers from India
I love Zinsser 123! Sticks to bloody everything. And if it doesn’t, there’s always Zinsser B.I.N. Thumbs up to Zinsser products in general! 👍🏻 Awesome video. Ta. I’ve got a wallpapered stairwell to do. The wallpaper cover-up will help enormously.
Took me back many decades to a rented property I was in for a couple of years. It was an old pre-fab, timber framed with metal skin. The inner walls were galvanized sheet metal and some evil swine of a previous tenant had gloss painted woodchip in the rear bedroom. Best incentive to move we ever had. :D
Lick of paint makes a world of difference doesn't it. I recently painted some kitchen cupboards in a property the resident were very pleased! Nice video.
It's great for loose paper, it can also be used when papering behind radiators as it sticks much better than wallpaper paste and will not come loose. You are welcome BTW Thanks for the comments
Many years ago I painted over wallpaper that had a slight embossed pattern. What was nice was that the same gentle lines below became a part of the paint pattern, making the paint look more like a re-paper job instead of paint. ........... Now for our friend the U. Handyman -- with different terminology on each side of the Atlantic Pond, what in the world is "sugar soap' ? We would use something with good emulsion if surface has any cooking grease or dust. Was also hoping you might say something about lighter brush strokes, dry brush or other techniques in the painting over wallpaper. Guess your intention was to simply cover the wallpaper well and be done.
Sugar soap is a product made from soap and sugar, which is used in the UK to clean, before painting. Not sure what they call it in the states! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_soap You only need light brush strokes, using a decent brush around the edges to "cut in", then a decent roller for the large areas. Thanks for the comment 👍
Great video as usual, and I see why you have painted over wallpaper as opposed to removing it. Age of the house etc... But done properly it can revamp an old tired house tremendously... great job... P.S. Definitely want one of those Wooster Pelicans.....
I have removed wall paper in a small bathroom and it took me and my wife 2 entire days. It was a terrible experience and when it was time to paint we had to spend more money to get the glue off that we could not see. Then a year later we painted over our wall papered living room and we have bubbles where the paper has turned loose and an area wear there are alot of small streaks. If I had followed all of the above suggestions it would have fixed the problems. It seems that 75% of the painted over living room is just fine because the original install of the paper was good and the wall paper was still smooth and stuck perfectly. I am considering this time covering over the walls with either paneling, 1/4" sheetrock/sand seams or wood flooring. I have wood flooring that looks like tile on one wall and it looks great and I have a pecan wood flooring half way up the wall up to the chair rail. Covering over the wallpaper cost the same as painting if I do all the work myself and it looked better. Painting took 3 times longer than installing wood flooring over the wallpaper. The laminate flooring that cost $3.00 a sq. ft. I could install myself and it stayed together better because it was 1 inch thick. The cheap .70 sq. ft laminate flooring does not want to stay clicked together on long runs. The other product of flooring I have used on the walls were the 18" x 18" square black rubber glued back stick tiles. The wallpaper was what I used in my first house when I was 25 years old. I hated wallpaper after that and I have installed the products above on walls. They are alot less trouble than wallpaper.
I've always known to never use a waterbase primer to prime over wallpaper as it can deactivate the glue and the wallpaper can peel. I've always been taught to use an oil base primer like Kilz original to prime with first and then paint over with a latex paint.
... 01/24/2020: Great tips using an oil-based primer so no bubbles in wallpaper. But, I have seams that are lifting. Should I just glue them down, or tear off lose paper and sparkle-in in the void left by removed paper? What do you think I should do? What about using a tool that cuts tiny holes in paper, and then use the primer?
I'd glue down any bits that are lifting using border adhesive (its better then wallpaper paste), then when the adhesive is dry you can prime over the lot. Thanks for the comment 👍
Good product for sprucing up a property your going to sell (so you won't be the one trying to strip painted wallpaper at some point in the future). Having been asked to paint over some really dirty wallpaper once to help someone out and being given cheap paint to do it with I can testify that unless you want to have to paint it completely, 3 times,(!) a product like this is worth getting.
5:07 --- is it the so-called "embossed" or "textured" wallpaper? I did not know Zinsser wallpaper cover up, your result looks interesting, did you get a totally smooth/texture-less finish after the paint-over? Or perhaps the texture/pattern is still there, just now in a shining new colour?
Do I need to use both, the Zinsser 123 and the Zinsser wallpaper cover up? I’m doing my living room and this is a great idea. I hate peeling wallpaper. By the way great video
Hi, I've moved into a house where the previous tenants painted over the wallpaper without using any primer. What should I now do if i want to paint over painted wallpaper? Do i use a primer and if so which one - oil based?
Would the wallpaper cover up hide wallpaper thats is ripped underneath paint? Wife decided to poorly remove old walpaper and then painted over it so you can see the lines of the ripped paper. Or should i used something like smooth over then sand it?
Thank you greatly. I am not able to remove the paper nor can i hire it done. So this will have to do and I pray it works. I have never seen that product at Lowes so will have to order it. We do have Zinnser 123 but your can said 123 Plus. ? Is there a difference? I hear the primer must be acrylic based. I can not use oil based BIN in this house due to respiratory issues. I have many rooms to do so will try. I appreciate your video. Sometimes you don’t have a choice but to paint it.
The 123+ is slightly different from the 123 123+ www.zinsseruk.com/product/bulls-eye-1-2-3-plus/ 123 www.zinsseruk.com/product/bulls-eye-1-2-3/ Best of luck with it ;-) Thanks for the comment 👍
Question…old 1980s mobile home seems to have wallpaper behind already painted walls, which in some places the paint is peeling….hints why I assume it’s wallpaper behind the paint….our mobile was bought this way. What do you suggest is the best process to paint our walls? Scrap off old paint? And then do this process? You’re advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Hello ultimate handyman. OK so we have a 3200 square-foot home recently repainted, several rooms where the wallpaper was painted over. I've just come across this video and noticed there are several products used. What I want to know is what do I do when I come across seams that have lifted away from the wall and also where you see vertical ridges? Which products do I use at this point after it's been painted and setting for a couple of months to then cover those up again and make the wall smooth? Thanks so much!
Wallpaper coverup, will only enable the paper to be painted, it does nothing to smooth out the paper. For lifting seams, I would stick them back down using border adhesive and then use a seam roller. Once the adhesive is dried, you can then start to paint over the top 👍
Thank you for your help. I have a room with already painted textured wallpaper, one of the walls has been painted with a dark colour on top of the wallpaper the rest of the wallpaper has been painted on by paler paint. I want to try paint them all white. Do I have to use the sugar soap and water on them to prepare ( worried will all turn to a mess) or do I apply the white paint directly on the paper. Do I need a primer on darker wall? Also what kind of paint do I use for best result on top of the painted wallpaper: water-based, oil-based, Matt, eggshell etc. Thank you for reply
No, you only need to use sugar soap if it's in a kitchen and the wallpaper is washable and covered in grease etc. I'd give it all a coat of wallpaper coverup, let that dry then give it two coats of water based emulsion, you can use matt or silk, depending on what finish you want. Thanks for the comment 👍
Hi. i have some thing that looks like lining paper that I want to paint. would you still recommend a primer? what could be the consequence of just painting a couple of layers of emulsion. thanks in advance.
If its lining paper I would seal it first using Zinsser Gardz- th-cam.com/video/dR_743ud8hE/w-d-xo.html Gardz seals lining paper perfectly and will ensure it sticks to the wall. If you just use emulsion it might cause some of the paper to come unstuck, bubble or blister. Thanks for the comment
Not sure about that. If you now prime over the top there is a risk that the primer will not adhere correctly to the previously applied paint. Thanks for the comment 👍
@@tanyawales5445 I'd do the same if painting over gloss, but I doubt if K F has painted using gloss paint. I have also never sanded wall paper, so I don't know how that will work out.
I've never painted a wall before, but we have some really old wallpaper that I want to cover. After I do the perma white, then I can paint whatever color I want, right?
@@ultimatehandyman Okay, this helps. And when I go to ACE or somewhere they will know what I mean when I ask for quality emulsion paint? Sorry I'm so new to the language.
Sorry, I’m not familiar with ACE, as I’m in the UK. Over here we have good brands such as Dulux, I’d try to get that instead of some unknown brand of paint 👍
What if I have a bit of loose plaster behind the wallpaper? Do I try to steam the wallpaper off, remove loose plaster, fill with Polyfilla then stick wallpaper back with some adhesive.
I would not steam the paper, as you will ruin it. You could try carefully removing the paper, then fixing the damage but you might end up replacing the wall paper!
Top vid again sir. I used the zinseer primer in my bathroom on bare plaster that I sanded . I know its probly not gold idea to do this but the paint has been INCREDIBLE, no difference from day I did it over 12 months ago. High steam and moisture room so if it can nandle this then it can handle anything. Its pricey but after first experience its SSSSOOOO worth it. Where can you get them small jugs you used for the small roller? Look very handy
Hi mate. Is that Zinzer primer acrylic or oil based and what type of glue did you use to affix the loose edges of wallpaper please? (We have different brands in Australia)
The Zinsser 123 is water based The wall paper coverup is oil based. For loose edges I normally use border adhesive, not sure if it's called the same over there, but basically it's a ready mixed adhesive, that sticks much better than traditional wallpaper paste. 👍
Thank you for the video. I had a few questions if I may, I have a tin of magnolia which is silk and another tin of magnolia which is matte, would I be able to use both and if so which one would I use first?
Trust me. There's times when 20 year old wallpaper won't come off. Unless you plan on literally removing all the drywall and slim costing everything again. Potentially costing 1,000s this is much easier for certain jobs.
Yes, absolutely But if the woodchip has already been painted over, you should just be able to paint it using emulsion paint. In the unlikely event that you get any bubbles that do not dry out flat after a few days, you can just inject a bit of wallpaper paste using a syringe. I've painted over woodchip a few times and it has never bubbled up yet. Thanks for the comment 👍
Great video bloke! How does the wall paper cover up paint differ from regular wall paint? Ps. The audio on the video seemed to be of lesser quality than your usual tutorials.
The cover-up is formulated so it won't make the wallpaper bubble or blister (which can happen with some paints on wallpaper), it also contains a stain blocker. I had to narrate over this video, which is much more difficult than recording the audio as I go along- hence the poor quality. Thanks for the comment
@@ultimatehandyman thank you for the info. To be clear, what you mean by the 'cover up' is the primer? Or would one need to use that specific primer and then another specific paint to avoid bubbling? I was thinking that if I used the right primer I would be able to use any regular paint on top of it. Thank you for your help and education. I look forward to your response as I am about to take on a project involving lots of wallpaper.
The coverup seals the wallpaper and primes it ready for the chosen top coat of your choice. Normally give it a coat of the coverup, then one or two coats of emulsion/eggshell paint etc.
I'd just paint over it using a long pile roller and some Zinsser wallpaper cover up, then two top coats of the emulsion paint of your choice. Thanks for the comment
Every painter is a world . . . my Way is -Remove any loosing paper -Apply Stail OIL base -2 Coats Skim Coat -1 coat Primer Water or Oil is ok - 2 coats Paint We do this very often in Commercial and Goverment Places ,High Traffic and works Great javapainting.ca ^V^
Hey man I got a question which I'm not sure has been answered but how long can painted wallpaper last? I don't mind painting over wallpaper if it lasts. I am planning to use wall paper cover up and dulux easycare
@@ultimatehandyman Like 10 years? I want to save money as all my walls are wallpaper. I don't mind if it doesn't look that good as long as it lasts and doesn't start peeling off.
Great video. I had looked at this Cover Up paint first as I have a wallpapered wall that I would prefer to paint and from your video it looks ideal to use, can't wait to get started now :)
Great video!! Quick question. I have 3 walls with painted lining paper on that have a couple of tears in from previous blu-tack posters. Would this method work for covering up those imperfections in the paper, ready to repaint? Thanks!
No, it won't hide damage like that, you might have to apply a little filler and give it a light sanding, then prime the paper with the wall paper cover up, then the top coat. Gyproc easi fill, is one of the easiest fillers to use. Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman that’s great thank you for your reply very helpful!! 😀 would you say I needed to put the cover up over the entire wall if it is just plain painted lining paper, or just the imperfections? Thank you 😊
@@MUSiCx100 It depends, if you painted the wall originally and you know that the lining paper is sound (apart from the repairs that you make), you might just get away with applying the top coat of paint (prime the area's that you repair though). With some wallpaper there is the chance that it will bubble, but as yours has already been painted there is less of a chance.
@@ultimatehandyman one last question. With the cover up, is it advisable to wear any kind of ventilator as I’ve heard the fumes are pretty strong? Thanks again
Thank you so much for this brilliant video, I followed your method and painted over 2 bedrooms with a green coloured textured wall paper with 1 coat of Zinsser Wallpaper Cover Up, 2 coats of contract brilliant white silk from Wicks. Really reallyu pleased with the finish. 1 quick question for next time, when cleaning with sugar soap and water, should I wait for it to dry before cleaning off with a damp cloth/sponge?
Sugar soap is not the best, as it can leave deposits behind that interfere with paint adhesion. But as long as it is cleaned off properly, it should be fine. I'd just wipe it off when it's damp, but keep cleaning out the rag and change the cleaning water regularly 👍
Just moved into a bungalow and every wall is covered in a hessian type wallpaper and painted very dark colours, nightmare! How do I calculate how much wallpaper cover up I’ll need per room please
It covers 5 - 8m2 per Litre So if you measure the height and width each wall in metres and multiply the two figures, that should tell you how many square metres it is, you can then work out how many tins you would need. You can get online calculators, but I'm not sure how accurate they are- www.smartcoat.com/tips-tricks
Thanks for the video. I currently rent a house that has wallpaper painted over. Unfortunately my cat has scratched some areas of the wall where the wallpaper was not fully flat, ripping off layers of material. I do not know where to go from here to try to repair these small areas. Can you give any advice on how I'd go about fixing this?
There is not much you can do, unless you can get some more paper and replace the damaged areas. Or if it is not too bad, perhaps you could fill the damage with some filler, then sand it and paint over the lot. Thanks for the comment
Thanks so much for this helpful video and answering back to so many of the comments people leave. Do I still need to prime the wallpaper when it seems like the wallpaper has previously been painted successfully (possibly with primer at that time)? Thanks
You are welcome. If the wallpaper has already been painted, you should just be able to paint right on top of the existing paint with no primer. Thanks for the comment
Yes, just treat it as a normal wall, if you get any bubbles, just inject some wallpaper paste into the bubble and then press it flat to the wall. Thanks for the comment 👍
It depends, in some circumstances applying water based emulsion can cause the paper to bubble/lift. If you just use the emulsion you might have to do remedial work afterwards if it does bubble etc.
Great video as usual. As an amateur, I'd never heard of Zinsser 123. Any idea if it would it be suitable for using on my daughter's bedroom where she has left 'oily-looking' blu-tac marks on the walls from her posters, or will the marks just wash off with sugar soap?
I doubt if the marks will clean off, although you could try Zinsser universal degreaser and cleaner, if that does not work a coat of Zinsser 123 should sort it, as you can use that to paint over crayon etc. Thanks for the comment
Had a question I live in a Mobile Home and I am remodeling my kitchen some parts have wallpaper other parts it has the wallpaper peeled of what is my best option to do before painting?
If the wallpaper is just loose, you can paste it back using border adhesive, then paint the lot using the wallpaper coverup, then apply a top coat. If bits of the paper are actually missing, it might be best to remove it all completely. Thanks for the comment
I’ve painted my kids room in a mobile home with wallpaper walls and it tends to scratch off when then touch the walls or something is too close and it grazes the wall... how do I percent this?
Top stuff that paint, recently did my daughters kitchen in the stuff...to be honest i couldn't be arsed to strip the paper back. Again great video fella, keep em coming
Most professional decorators shops sell all the Zinsser products, such as Crown decorator centres, Dulux decorator centres etc. I bought mine from B&Q but it was not easy to find it in store. I have bought it from ebay in the past- fave.co/2F5Jonc The Pelican is great, I'm sure I bought it from Screwfix (they sell the liners too) bit.ly/2CiuCIy Thanks for the comment ;-)
Not sure, I have used this lots of times and never had any bubbles. If it does not dry out and go back flat in a day or so, you might have to inject some wall paper adhesive into the bubble. I've used a needle and syringe in the past for similar jobs, which you can get at most chemists.
I'm not sure what it was, sorry. (it was in my mother-in-law's kitchen, she has since moved) If you are looking to buy wallpaper for a kitchen, there is lots to choose from, just search for "kitchen washable wallpaper" and lots will pop up. Thanks for the comment 👍
When mixing that can of paint with a drill, I noticed the paint was Zinsser B.I.N. I'm just wondering why you didn't mention it, as it's my favourite paint for covering surfaces like wallpaper.
I just wanted to demonstrate how to use a mixer paddle, I could not find the footage of me mixing the 123, although it is on my computer somewhere. Thanks for the comment
It depends what I'm doing. I often use Zinsser coverstain for blocking stains or painting over stained varnish etc. B.I.N is great for priming some substrates. I have a small book called the pocket guide to surface priming and decoration by Zinsser and that tells you the best product to use for each scenario. I also have the Zinsser App on my phone which is great as you can search for substrates. I have a few of the pocket guides, if you want one if you send me a message via TH-cam, I'll pop one in the post for you when I get chance ;-)
@@ultimatehandyman Chalk paint while pretty can't take wear and tear. It needs to be sealed. It is used on areas you want to be able to distress easily.
What the hell is sugarsalt on water ?? I notice that when you are done with the primer that there is still the wallpaper pattern showing through. Is that OK? I would think another coat of primer would be called for, but then again you first coat of paint seems to cover it up well. What is the rule on that? Nice video, as usual.
Sugarsoap and water, it's a cleaning soap/sugar solution that is often used prior to decorating. It comes as a powder and you mix it with water, then clean the surface with it. I tend to use Zinsser universal degreaser instead of sugar soap, but I didn't want to mention another Zinsser product in the video as it was sounding like a Zinsser commercial LOL. Thanks for the comment
It's fine that the paper can still be seen through the primer, it's job is to seal the wallpaper. You could apply two coats of the primer, but it is more expensive than the emulsion paint (or the Perma-white) so best to give it two top coats of paint. Thanks for the comment
If you can't get or can't afford the paint in this video. Are there alternative. Do you have to sand the wallpaper. If not are they any circumstances where you have to
I would never sand the wallpaper. I have seen people paint over some wallpapers, using just emulsion paint but it can make the wallpaper bubble, sometimes it also takes several coats to cover the wallpaper.
Zinsser 123 for the kitchen wallpaper, followed by Zinsser Perma white. But if you can get it the wallpaper coverup is better, you can just use that, then give it a couple of coats of your favourite emulsion paint 👍
You said use Zisser 123, but then said something was cheaper than that. Then it sounds like you said you use "sugar salt" to clean the vinyl? I'm sorry; I've listened so many times and can't make it out.
I wonder if they change the ingredients over there 🤔 I do remember buying a diamond cutting disc once and that said something like “known to cause cancer in California” 🤔 All Zinsser products are good in the UK, I always try and use their products, as they are quick drying and you know there will be no issues. Thanks for the comments 👍
I would be afraid to paint over every type of wallpaper… I could see painting over paper wallpaper but I haven’t seen anything in this video that would tell me how the seams would hide and I would like to know how the seams look after this is painted.
As long as the wallpaper has been applied correctly in the first place the seams are not an issue when they are painted over. But if the seams are overlapping or there are gaps this product will not hide them. Thanks for the comment 👍
Stick sheets of mesh to wall and skim coat over the whole room if you’re nuts like me, or just coat the seams. I did my walls this way 12 years ago. Still look great.
Lovely bright but very cold day down here in the Midlands, you’ve got to stop showing me useful tools to buy as you are costing me a small fortune. Dewalt light arrived on Friday and is fab. Pelican - off to have a look :-) Enjoy your day and thanks for sharing. Regards. Mike
Also it makes no difference if its the kitchen. The walls always need cleaning, no matter where they are located. However, i simply just like to do it correctly

Sugar soap is a product made from soap and sugar, which is used in the UK to clean, before painting. Not sure what they call it in the states!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_soap
You only need light brush strokes, using a decent brush around the edges to "cut in", then a decent roller for the large areas.

I'm not sure why they don't sell it over there, I would have thought that it would be a much larger market!

Great video as usual, and I see why you have painted over wallpaper as opposed to removing it. Age of the house etc... But done properly it can revamp an old tired house tremendously... great job...
P.S. Definitely want one of those Wooster Pelicans.....
Thanks for the comment ;-)

Thanks for the comment 👍
I have always use kilz oil primer on wallpaper and it works but in my area they don't sell gallons any more only quarts

Yes, their primers are absolutely brilliant!

Hi, im sorry if i missed the detail, but i am a bit confused as to when to use the 1.2.3 primer and when to use the wallpaper cover up? Thanks!
Absolutely, that is exactly what I was doing in the later part of the video.

The texture is still there, but it is just a different colour afterwards

I once painted over a whole bedroom with ordinary apple white emulsion and it looked just fine
Thanks a lot for this video mate. Really useful.
No problem 👍

Do I need to use both, the Zinsser 123 and the Zinsser wallpaper cover up? I’m doing my living room and this is a great idea. I hate peeling wallpaper. By the way great video
No, you can just use the wallpaper cover up, then paint it with the paint of your choice.

The wallpaper version, I believe, is unavailable in Canada so I often use the next best thing - Zinsser BIN Shellac Base Primer-Sealer.
Thanks for the info 👍
Hi,
I've moved into a house where the previous tenants painted over the wallpaper without using any primer.
What should I now do if i want to paint over painted wallpaper? Do i use a primer and if so which one - oil based?
As long as the paint is not coming off, you should be able to use wallpaper coverup
Would the wallpaper cover up hide wallpaper thats is ripped underneath paint? Wife decided to poorly remove old walpaper and then painted over it so you can see the lines of the ripped paper. Or should i used something like smooth over then sand it?
The cover up is an oil based paint so is it ok to put a water based top coat emulsion on top of this?
Yes. It’s fine to paint over it with emulsion.

It's hard to say without seeing it, if they have just painted on top of wallpaper, it might start flaking off over time 🤔
I where can I get the Zinsser Wallpaper Cover-up? Cant find it anywhere in US, not even Amazon! Great video!
I don't think it is available over there yet 🤔
What is the next best thing since Zinsser wallpaper cover up isn’t available in the US?
Really helpful video, thanks! And that sounds like a very strong Blackburn accent!!!
Just next door, in Darwen 😉
Thanks for the comment 👍
Assuming you've used the right primer, can the top coat be any wall/ceiling paint?
Yes 👍
Where can I but Zinsser wallpaper cover up in the USA ?

So what primer do I use? What paint do I use.
Oil base primer or water base primer? What paint can I use? Oil or water? For wall paper
Use the Wallpaper coverup as the primer, than apply any emulsion as the top coat
Thanks for the comment 👍
Hi. i have some thing that looks like lining paper that I want to paint. would you still recommend a primer?
what could be the consequence of just painting a couple of layers of emulsion.
thanks in advance.
If its lining paper I would seal it first using Zinsser Gardz- th-cam.com/video/dR_743ud8hE/w-d-xo.html
Gardz seals lining paper perfectly and will ensure it sticks to the wall.
If you just use emulsion it might cause some of the paper to come unstuck, bubble or blister.
Thanks for the comment
Thanks! Does it stay long and durable?
Absolutely 👍
But if you want a really durable top coat, I would use something like Zinsser PermaWhite, which is mould resistant and scrubbable
What do you do if you’ve already painted the wall paper without using the primer and it chips of easily?
Not sure about that. If you now prime over the top there is a risk that the primer will not adhere correctly to the previously applied paint.
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman You could sand the wall to give it "tooth" and then paint the wall. that's what you have to do to paint over gloss finishes.
@@tanyawales5445 I'd do the same if painting over gloss, but I doubt if K F has painted using gloss paint. I have also never sanded wall paper, so I don't know how that will work out.

What if I have a bit of loose plaster behind the wallpaper? Do I try to steam the wallpaper off, remove loose plaster, fill with Polyfilla then stick wallpaper back with some adhesive.
I would not steam the paper, as you will ruin it.

Hi mate. Is that Zinzer primer acrylic or oil based and what type of glue did you use to affix the loose edges of wallpaper please? (We have different brands in Australia)
The Zinsser 123 is water based
The wall paper coverup is oil based.
From what I can remember you can paint silk on top of matte, but not matte on top of silk- as it can cause the paint to crack.
@@ultimatehandyman thank you!
can we use any paint on wall paper after zinsser 123 initial coates/ like Dulux Pure Brilliant White
You can use any emulsion 👍
"Dulux pure brilliant white" is only specifying the brand and the colour of the paint, not the type of paint.
I have applied one coat of zinsser primer but I can still see the bold wallpaper print underneath. Do I still need a second coat?
It should be fine with two top coats of your chosen emultion on top 👍
Why did you use the Zinsser 123 in the bathroom but the wallpaper coverup in the other rooms?
Wallpaper coverup was not available when I painted the bathroom, so 123 was used 😉
The extra time required to remove the paper is worth it when looking for a lasting paint job!
Thanks for the comment
Not if your walls are f'ed
Trust me. There's times when 20 year old wallpaper won't come off. Unless you plan on literally removing all the drywall and slim costing everything again. Potentially costing 1,000s this is much easier for certain jobs.
Great Vid as always! Can the wallpaper coverup be used as a basecoat on woodchip wallpaper stuck to the ceiling?
Yes, absolutely
But if the woodchip has already been painted over, you should just be able to paint it using emulsion paint.
I have wallpaper that is already coming off and behind looks like wood, what would you recommend?
What is the next best thing since Zinsser wallpaper cover up isn’t available in the US?

Do I still need to prime the wallpaper when it seems like the wallpaper has previously been painted successfully (possibly with primer at that time)?

If the wallpaper has already been painted, you should just be able to paint right on top of the existing paint with no primer.

Can you paint over wallpaper that has been painted over before? Would you then just treat it as an ordinary wall?

Do I need to use a cover up ,when the paper I’m covering is white and not patterned..
It depends, in some circumstances applying water based emulsion can cause the paper to bubble/lift.
If you just use the emulsion you might have to do remedial work afterwards if it does bubble etc.

It's fine that the paper can still be seen through the primer, it's job is to seal the wallpaper. You could apply two coats of the primer, but it is more expensive than the emulsion paint (or the Perma-white) so best to give it two top coats of paint.
Thanks for the comment
Is there anyone covering that cannot be painted over?
If you can't get or can't afford the paint in this video. Are there alternative. Do you have to sand the wallpaper. If not are they any circumstances where you have to
I would never sand the wallpaper.
I have seen people paint over some wallpapers, using just emulsion paint but it can make the wallpaper bubble, sometimes it also takes several coats to cover the wallpaper.
What are the products used in this video
Zinsser 123 for the kitchen wallpaper, followed by Zinsser Perma white. But if you can get it the wallpaper coverup is better, you can just use that, then give it a couple of coats of your favourite emulsion paint 👍
Does anyone knows if i want my walls white, can i use just that white cover up?
I guess you could, but they recommend applying a top coat of paint. I guess a proper top coat will be much more durable.

Lovely bright but very cold day down here in the Midlands, you’ve got to stop showing me useful tools to buy as you are costing me a small fortune. Dewalt light arrived on Friday and is fab. Pelican - off to have a look :-) Enjoy your day and thanks for sharing. Regards. Mike
Sorry about that Mike ;-)
I do have some more tools to review, but I might leave them for a while!
The Pelican is great.

Also it makes no difference if its the kitchen. The walls always need cleaning, no matter where they are located. However, i simply just like to do it correctly

Where do you buy it at
Most decorators shops stock it, or you can buy it from sellers on eBay etc. 👍
