This song represents a truly inspired collaboration of post-punk grandees who have come together to create the first great song of 2020, "A Very British Coup." It is a growling political broadside spat out in response to the conservative campaign to pull the United Kingdom out of the European Union without ever mentioning the B word.
Led by Jah Wobble (PiL, Invaders of the Heart), "Coup" was recorded with renowned producer Martin "Youth" Glover (Killing Joke, The Orb, Brilliant) and features the legendary bassist's former PiL band-mates Richard Dudanski on drums and guitarist Keith Levene together with vocals from The Pop Group’s frontman Mark Stewart. Andrew Weatherall and Nina Walsh add loops to the proceedings. Released to coincide with Britain’s official departure from the European Union on January 31 2020. “The bass don pulls together his own post-punk Avengers for this anti-Brexit anthem and it’s a riot” Q magazine. “Wobble’s booming dub bass and Levene’s classic guitar skree sounding like a 21st century ‘Metal Box’ - this is already one of the tracks of the year” John Robb / Louder Than War Magazine.
This U.S. CD EP features four versions of the title song including an exclusive dub version by Youth not available elsewhere.

And to make things even worse Youth and the rest of Killing Joke lost Geordie Walker late last year. I was shocked.
Life experience suggests it is incredibly difficult for a bunch of old chaps in their 60s, to sound fresh with new musical compositions.
And that track sounds like it could have been made in their 20s.

Wish I'd thought of it (I might steal it anyway) I just wanted to listen to some music and I have Jah Wobble's "I could Have Been a Contender" sitting on my desk but I was too lazy to hook up a CD player so I went to TH-cam. I just ordered this CD. Only 2 left. (the P&H were more expensive than the actual CD but worth it on the strength of this track).

Keith Levene is highly underrated as a guitarist here in the U.S. and it's a shame.
So true, and the way Keith kicks in on this song is so deft and jagged. It has a tossed off feel that conveys both punk attitude and master craft level skill. Please tell your friends about this EP if you are willing and able.

I've had a picture of John Lydon and you together on stage at the Palladium Theater in NYC for over 40yrs. Johnny has on a light blue suit with a NY Yankee T-shirt on and you are right behind him. This song is quite good.

Mark is busy with Pop Group doings and another solo record that should be out soon. That said, I think everyone involved in this song, likes the idea of doing more together if the stars align.

The perfect track for a very pissy year! Always nice to see some old rebels speaking out. This popped up under "suggested for you" because of the Invaders Of The Heart. I'll have to go and find the other 3 tracks now. Boris Johnson may be awful, but imagine living under Trump!

This is the best of the cream de la crem of da post punk players there was then and now. I seriously think they should consider doing an full album together while they're still with us. So agree. We were talking about an album from this crew after this EP release but then Andrew passed and then Keith and it was a moot point. Now with Mark gone we are left with a sinking feeling about how much more music might have come were it not for mortality.
