her nickname is lizzy grant, which is the name she started with as well as lana del ray, which was her first name before del rey, only there was a mistake when placing the name of her first album and they put ray instead of rey.
Lana ALWAYS writes all of her songs (her real name is Elizabeth Grant). She says she's a poet first and singer second. The only ones she doesn't get credit for are the ones she covers of course :)
Fun fact- Pretty When You Cry was recorded live, freestyled, and was done in one take with the guitar and session drummer. Obviously they added melodies and stuff later but pretty impressive!
Ooohh haha well that makes me feel silly. Curious why she's listed as Lana on the others then instead of Elizabeth. Thanks for that anyway, I was like there is no way someone else wrote these so perfectly matched with her style!
@@EvolveSongwriting Someone can correct me if i'm wrong but i think it's because she wrote and copyrighted those songs when she was performing under her birth name - Lizzy Grant, but then she released those songs on the albums years later, under her new stage name Lana Del Rey.
@@faustnox1575 not sure about west coast, but old money was definitely a song she had been working on before she shifted into Lana Del Rey, it was originally called “methamphetamines”
black beauty in my opinion is one of the most stunning songs she’s ever written. Truly grand and beautiful, even if the subject of the song is heartbreaking. Chord progression, melodies, delivery, lyrical content make it such a masterpiece🥲
I'm mainly a metalhead, but damn, LDR is something special. Particularly this album, Chemtrails Over the Country Club, and the best one: Norman F**king Rockwell. Really haven't heard an indie/dreampop artist that can affect you like she does. Incredible.
lmao i have encountered a lot of guys listening mainly on metalheads who likes Lana particularly the Chemtrails saying it's one of their hard core songs. so is it true then?
There are also two additional songs on other versions of the album (is this happiness and flipside) you should definitely listen to, especially flipside!
Lana truly doesn’t get the credit she deserves for being so different from everyone else. She’s great at creating a picture in the mind’s eye and has lyrics that again, are very one of a kind.
You HAVE to be a sell-out in this industry to get the credit you need. True poets made suffering their art and held onto their principles throughout history. Bob Marley was not promoted during his lifetime by the media either, it was only word-to-mouth. Also, he never won a Grammy either because of his anti-industry stance.
I’m so happy I found your channel. I love how thorough you are with picking up on so many elements of her music. I am in love with the way you play along with it as well and your knowledge of music. I feel like I learn something Everytime I see one of your videos! Honestly becoming a fav channel to watch ❤
She wrote "West Coast" and all her songs (besides covers) SHE IS Elizabeth 😭 But besides that, love your reactions! Please listen her last album "Blue Banisters"
I looooved your review!! You will really like Honeymoon next, it has that cinematic feel and magical lyrics you appreciated in here. And it’s okay, every Lana stan has its time recognizing that they are Elizabeth stans too
You should definitely react to her whole discography. I love your reactions & analysis. And Lana is definitely the best artist today, in my opinion anyway. She's my 2nd fave of all time, behind only Pink Floyd. Thank you for bringing me back to when I first discovered her. My favorites on this album have to be Shades of Cool and Old Money, but it's one of my favorite albums of hers, along with NFR and Honeymoon.
Writing some comments as I watch your analysis: -She does have a song that was thought for a Bond movie, but it's on her next album Honeymoon, it's called '24'. -The male voice at the end of 'Brooklyn Baby' is Barry James O'Neill's, her boyfriend at the time. This line was originally planned to be recorded with Lou Reed himself (who's referenced in the song!) but he passed away the day that Lana flew in to NYC to record. -Ultraviolence might be her album with the most bits of guitar, she experiments with other sounds in her other albums. I'm really enjoying your Lana series, I hope we can see more of your reactions to the rest of her albums. :)
i wish i knew more about production as you, like when you mentioned at 55:53 about the vintage vibrato, i have no idea what you're talking about but it's amazing that you can catch small things of the sort :)
It sticks out like a sore thumb when you know what to listen for! The 'musical theatre' style vibrato has a much more exaggerated pitch variation versus staying on the same note and using just changing volume (which is really tremolo, not vibrato!)
old money is actually an older song, i believe it was written around 2006 under the name “methamphetamines” .. there is a demo that can be found with different lyrics but same melody :)
Just found your channel and i’m absolutely happy i did! thank for such a detailed review of this masterpiece, hope you’ll check out more of Lana’s works :)
Love the videos! I like how you break down and play the chord progressions - very interesting takes. One thing I noticed that I realized I didn’t like about this album while relistening to it with you is how overly drenched her vocals are in reverb :/ I loved it in 2014 in high school, but I my likes have change over the years. That’s why I love Norman F Rockwell because Jack Antonoff made her vocals more clear.
interesting insight. i actually like it because it's kind of like she was overshadowed by the darkness created by the world where both her and her lover shared, which what the album suggests in its totality.
Also in FMWUTP one of the producers was Emile Haynie, he also worked with Florence+The Machine on High As Hope, which I highly recommend for you to listen and analyze. And Florence music in general, there’s just so much going on with both vocals and production!
I just found your channel. Thanks for reminding me what a great fckn album this is. I listened to it over and over for probably a year after it first came out. It lined up very well with my messy era lol. Love it. Thanks.
Loving your Lana reactions! The Other Woman is a cover, she has them on a couple albums. So happy you did the deluxe version! Your face at the West Coast change up is all of us the first time we hear it lol I always look forward to everyone's reaction to it. Same with Cola which you'll hear on Paradise. There are compilation videos of people just reacting to the first line of Cola lol
i loved his reaction to the tempo change of west coast, i remember when i first heard it i was like wtf is happening and then when it went back i was like wow this is crazy, then at the end when it adds that west coast synth in the background intensifying against the super smooth chorus repeating again, it’s literally my favorite song of all time because it’s so unique!
i would have loved to see you reacting to is this happiness and flipside, which are two additional tracks that unfortunately are not on streaming services
lmaooo I was so hoping for you to go “who’s this elizabeth grant chick that keeps coming up?” and googling her so we could see your reaction when you realized haha
Old Money is one of my favorite songs because it’s melody is sampled from “What is a youth” from the original Romeo & Juliet film in 1968. That’s where Nino Rita comes in on the credits. She did an awesome job with it
I think I have a specific fav album from Lana… but then I listen to another Lana album and then that becomes my fav lol. My fav Lana album is whatever album I’m listening to at the time. This album however has so much pain for me. It was during the end of a very long 12 year toxic relationship. So this album is burned into my mind on a COMPLETELY different level. Honeymoon album is also my fav. It really is so classy and sophisticated. I love how she took vintage orchestral and dark symphonies and really served us some very classy energy.
Please do more Lana! Her older albums are the best imo and you're clearly the kind of guy who can appreciate them. Also random songs that aren't really part of any proper album and unreleased and underrated tracks (from her Lizzy Grant days), like Burning Desire, Wayamaya, Yes to Heaven, Beautiful Player, Heart-shaped Box (Nirvana cover), Angels Forever, Mermaid Motel, Fine China, Big Eyes, Kill Kill, Serial Killer, Smarty and I Don't Wanna Go are some of the best.
Brooklyn Baby was supposed to be a featuring with Lou Read, but he died the day they were supposed to record the song. The male voice at the end it’s because of that
you have to listen to chemtrail. It has some interesting structures. Then her latest album Blue Banisters has more acoustic elements but it's also great.
One unreleased song that she dind't put on the album, which fits between UV and shades of cool is CULT LEADER , all in that song is a completely wonder
