Dean Ford (the singer) recorded an acoustic version of this just before he died. It is just as beautiful and haunting and even more bittersweet. One of my favorite all time songs.
Another Vietnam vet died recently from the Agent Orange he was exposed to for years in Nam. In his 70's with a widow, son, grandson, and beloved daughter for whom I grieve, his body finally succumb to its devastating affects. I pray for every member of his awesome family.

My wife of 33 years has cancer, and she's struggling. If I could take it away from her and give it to me, I would in a heartbeat. When I hear this song....I don't know why, but I lose it. "Oh my sorrows, sad tomorrows, take me back, to my own home..." She's my home.
This song was and is a MASTERPIECE. It is and always will be since in 1967 to now. Now back in 1967 I was 15. I liked it than. Now, all these tons of years later, I now have basically, my whole life to reflect on. I made a ton of comments on the original version of this song. Other versions also. But Dean's re-recording of this song, in 2017, a year before he died, is telling. His voice didn't crack when he sang, "oh, and I don't want to die", a true artist. I made comments there also. I even commented back and forth to the sound engineer who made that recording. I was very lucky he wrote me. Anyway, the song has everything ✨. I hope you whom read this, take the time to really listen to it, and see if it brings back memories of your life, both good and bad. For your memories made you, yourself. On Jan 15 2016 he passed away ( on my birthday of all days) i listen to this and i think of him and when we were driving to his funeral this song came on. And i knew he was finally home. But not our home, but his Heavenly home.

This was played as a request of mine on another channel about six months ago. It brings back many memories of that era. The song is so unique and has an undeniable hook. The vocals of the lead singer are superb, as well as the harmony of them all. And the beautiful instrumentation just nails it.

I never saw this band until sometime in the past year or so when I saw a different video with the entire footage of this performance. Without the TH-cam user editing. This sounds so good, because it's actually the studio version, put over a live film of some concert somewhere. This is a classic rock radio staple from the Golden Era of Music. You're right about it sounding like The Beatles, the chords are similar to the Beatles' "A Day In The Life". The footage of them singing in this video is actually from a live tv appearance, with the recorded version put on top of it. That live version and a couple other live tv versions of the song are on TH-cam, you should check them out, Dean Ford passed last year, I was fortunate to see him play in a small club in Los Angeles a couple years ago. This song sounds like a Penance from the generation that didn't know what to do. The generation that went before us was the "Greatest Generation". This song ALWAYS made me feel nostalgic. I didn't know why until I got into my 50s. But it really laid me out watching the version with him singing this same song, but as a very old man, all while this version is fading in and out of the video. His singing seems so much sadder, then he walks off into a garden. I believe he died not long after. Omg, it's such a heart wrenching but beautiful video. Just watch it. Even if it's on your own. You won't be sorry, but you'll have a feeling that is sad and mixed with something else. I can barely watch it yet I love it. It's just him watching himself as a young man, singing the same words at the same time as when he was young. Watching his life go by. Damn now i have to watch it again and feel like I'd do anything to be that young again.

I know what it is that hits me hard! Just watched again. It's the desperate longing in his eyes to be that young man again, and realizing he can't. He's crying inside! And you can see it in his eyes as he sings it with his younger self that plays as he sings. The version is mellower with cellos and acoustic guitar. Wow! I feel his longing too! I've watched documentary's of US service men saying that this song had meaning, and the line that meant the most was " take me back to my old home" given what they were going through who could blame them.
Is cathartic the word you're looking for? The song never got the recognition it deserved. I'd love to hear the back story on this song. I assumed it was a reaction to the political and social injustices of the day. I don't know about others, but 50 years later I'm still working on it.
Need to put this song in context. The Vietnam War was raging. RFK and MLK had been assassinated earlier in 1968. Racial strife was tearing the nation apart. I was 14 years old and it captures the emotions I was experiencing then.
As a child of the 60's I was never into Marmalade but after it popped into my play list it's now one of my go to songs. Love everything about this performance. Plus hearing Dean Ford do Roy Orbison IN DREAMS. Such an underrated singer RIP DEAN. 👑👑👑👑

its a beautiful song...I remember when it was released.. I was maybe 11 or 12...same time frame as the Beatles, a lot of 60s early 70s had their influence....you should do "Without You" by Harry Nilsson it has a similar feel and is classic!

This song ALWAYS made me feel nostalgic. I didn't know why until I got into my 50s. But it really laid me out watching the version with him singing this same song, but as a very old man, all while this version is fading in and out of the video. His singing seems so much sadder, then he walks off into a garden. I believe he died not long after. Omg, it's such a heart wrenching but beautiful video. Just watch it. Even if it's on your own. You won't be sorry, but you'll have a feeling that is sad and mixed with something else. I can barely watch it yet I love it. It's just him watching himself as a young man, singing the same words at the same time as when he was young. Watching his life go by. Damn now i have to watch it again and feel like I'd do anything to be that young again.

I know what it is that hits me hard! Just watched again. It's the desperate longing in his eyes to be that young man again, and realizing he can't. He's crying inside! And you can see it in his eyes as he sings it with his younger self that plays as he sings. The version is mellower with cellos and acoustic guitar. Wow! I feel his longing too! I'll never be young again. Ever...

I assumed it was a reaction to the political and social injustices of the day. I don't know about others, but 50 years later I'm still working on it.
Need to put this song in context. The Vietnam War was raging. RFK and MLK had been assassinated earlier in 1968. Racial strife was tearing the nation apart. I was 14 years old and it captures the emotions I was experiencing then.
As a child of the 60's I was never into Marmalade but after it popped into my play list it's now one of my go to songs. Love everything about this performance. Plus hearing Dean Ford do Roy Orbison IN DREAMS. Such an underrated singer RIP DEAN. 👑👑👑👑

I have to agree with you, the lyrics are pretty darn deep, but then a lot of the songs released during that era were songs with "making you think" type of lyrics (and then, some aren't). Thanks for reviewing this one, I really like it.
Dean Ford....passed away 2019 was with the band from 1967 to 1976 I believe...he was born in Scotland in 1942....Dean Ford is his stage name.....

its a beautiful song...I remember when it was released.. I was maybe 11 or 12...same time frame as the Beatles, a lot of 60s early 70s had their influence....you should do "Without You" by Harry Nilsson it has a similar feel and is classic!
