We can't deny that Hoggy plays with his heart and his soul, great player and servant of Scottish rugby. Some skills. One of the last guys in Test rugby who realise quite beautiful spirals, we gotta love this.
Disappointing to hear that he is retiring but also relieved to hear that he is. Undoubtedly one of the best to ever wear the thistle but glad that he is going out at the top of his game.

Personally I think Liam Williams is a better option but Hogg is a fantastic player

World class in so many ways hes been in the top 3 fullbacks in the world now for years and years often called the best but thats up to opinion but nevertheless top bloke and a top top player
wildebest i agree with alot of what u have said ordinary in defense is pretty harsh but he’s definitely not the best in that area. Im not sure where your referring to losing his cool he’s passionate for his team but i seem to remember 1 red in his pro career in 2014 and 1 yellow a couple years ago other than that nothing. Personally i think hogg was a very poor choice as captain as it puts to much pressure on some people especially when ur a world class fullback with so much pressure on you already so yes since hes become captain i think the pressure he was under showed against ireland or england but other than 1 or 2 blunders he was great against ireland.

Or maybe you mean defensive blunders like ignoring the ball going wide to Huget on the wing, and failing to track across to prevent him scoring in the corner... A defensive blunder like that perhaps?)
Hogg is no more defensively weak, in either the tackle, nor under the high ball, than any other Lions possible FB - and he's far better in many other areas too. Anyone even remotely suggesting Williams, (or Halfpenny...LOL!!) for that spot, needs to lay off the drugs. It's either Hogg, or Larmour. End of debate.
wildebest you say the scots are mongs pal but thats the most arrogant comment ive seen on this section after someone has made a perfectly valid comment instead of debating it with your own opinions you result to name calling suggesting you dont have much to say because you know hes right. He never mocked half penny he was implying that it would be crazy to mention half penny for the lions at this stage in his career let alone talk about him starting at fullback and anyone who knows anything about rugby would agree apart from a wee welsh fan boy who needs to get a life and stop being an arrogant child.

Honestly, just laughing at those claiming Williams is first Lions choice over Hogg - (to say nothing of the idiot who mentioned Halfpenny...) Williams had probably his best season in recent memory last year. Yet if you really look at his international performances - I mean *really* look at them. He's nowhere near the level of Hogg.
Hogg is often criticised by Williams' fans as being defensively weak. Yet Williams is often hilariously bad at Fifteen in defence. Take last years Six Nations. Wales won the GS, and Williams had one his best ever seasons. Yet in almost every match he was to blame for serious defensive errors. Even from game one against France, when he was third man in on the French Number Eight - yet for some mad reason *still* tried to tackle around his chest area. That's schoolboy level bad technique. His positioning is also horrible - or he's just outright lazy, because for Huget's score out wide he didn't even bother tracking across the field. The passing was always going wide. There was no way for France to switch back inside. Yet he left North utterly exposed out on the touchline just because he was either too poor a player to read that obvious move, or too lazy/slow to get there in time.
It was even the same during the last Lions tour in NZ. He failed to collect an uncontested high ball, and let it bounce instead. Then didn't even bother contesting the bounced ball, which allowed Ioane to go through and score against Daley.
Williams benefits from the hype he gets at both Saracens, and Wales. So when he does a few things right, he's immediately over-hyped by the Welsh especially, as being the best Fifteen in the NH/World. The truth is that Williams is an ok Test level Winger. He's nowhere near the best choice for Lions FB. Not even when he's on top form - and he hasn't seen that for a while now.

People who know much more about rugby than me and you i.e Gatland would have seen it surely if he was "world class".
@@jamesm5497 Hogg didn’t start on the 2017 tour because he broke his eye socket in a warm up game. Gatland has publicly said if he had been fit he would have started at 15 for the Lions.

Good player, not world class though. Defensively poor and goes missing in big games. Never scored against a southern hemisphere giant and only scored against teams like italy and france when they was poor. Liam Williams should be the starting fullback in south Africa for his all round game.

He almost carried scotland to a win against the abs in 2017 he was metres away from scoring and winning the match he also got man of the match he was sensational against south africa in 2018 but went off with injury at halftime.
Boom you clearly got a hard on for hoggy, sorry to have hurt your feelings about him. But facts are facts, he's never scored against a southern hemisphere giant, so in my opinion that is poor, to be the best you have to beat the best or at least score against them.

@@danielmcquade4005 personally think at least one of those is because he stands out in such a sub par Scotland team. He's not the world class player he's made out to be. He wouldn't have got into either an England or Wales 15 even at his prime imo

@@jamesm5497 Mike Brown is surely not at Hoggs level, especially in an attacking sense. Irrelevent of that he's been off the intetnational scene for a couple years now and is well past his best. As for Williams, when fully fit i can understand why one would considered him better, he's a class player and certainly better the Hogg defensively. I think the majority of people would consider it a close call at the very least.
Hogg has the best highlights reel of almost any player ever. But the stuff not on this reel is poor and Gatland won’t pick him. A liability under the high ball and SA will be praying it’s Hogg not Williams - fortunately Gatland knows this. Hogg’s greatest strength is destroying broken defence. SA won’t have a broken defence, so no point picking Hogg. Don’t get me wrong he’s a very good rugby player with brilliant attacking skills. He’s just not a Lions quality full back.
