My grandmother took me to Lakeside Park many times in the 50s and 60s. About ten years ago I visited the park and noticed the three sand bars that you encounter as you venture further out in the lake. I mentioned this to my father and he answered that those same sand bars were there just like that when he was a kid in the 30s. For my money there is no beach more beautiful anywhere in the world.
I had no idea those condos at Keewahdin and Gratiot had once been a grand resort hotel! One of my SC4 college teachers lived there and hosted an end-of-year gathering in her home. It seems to me it was originally slated to be an outdoor gathering but it rained. For whatever reason, we were inside her condo in August. If I would have known the history back then, I would have taken a closer look. But it really was modernized, and looked like any other 1980s condo.
Amazing, I had no idea about the resorts... I did some of my own research and came across an obituary for the musician, Mr. McKanlass - who was rather famous - having composed the music for the Keystone Cops movies. who knew? :) TH-cam won't let me post it, but if you google McKanlass and rootsweb, it should take you right to his obitiuary.
