  • Hitting the opening tee shot of a major is an honour bestowed on few golfers. Hitting the opening tee shot at home is even more rare.
Born in Glasgow, just an hour from Royal Troon, local hero Colin Montgomerie acknowledged a rapturous crowd on the first morning in 2016 as he got the 145th Open Championship underway.
Not every script is written how we might like. Monty made quite the start at first but recovered miraculously to stay in touch after the first round.

What's your worst moment on the opening hole of a round?

My worst openings usually had to do with bushes that were too close to the tee as to be regarded as really in play...

Popping a drive up and into a tiny pond about 5 yards to the front-right side of the tee box--on a slow day--so I had an audience waiting behind me.

That shot from the rough to the flag is what separates great players like Monty. Not easy to do unless you can calm your temper.

Monty makes an excellent recovery after a hideous lie and position in the bunker after a 2nd that was perhaps 6 feet short. It is easy to slam Monty but he played the fourth well away from the bunkers, got out and then got up and down. I do not know about where you drop if you take an unplayable from the bunker but there may be no guarantee you do better than a 5 and you may often still get a 6 by not getting as close with the chip as Montgomery did.

    Get on with it Monty

He should have taken an unplayable, especially if he didn't feel confident it was coming out. The last thing you want is another of the same shot.

Yes. Even though unplayable options differ when in a bunker, any of those options would have most likely been better than what transpired.
