  • Intuitive, or flexible training programs give you the freedom to work your muscles as you like instead of sticking to a strict routine. It's an approach that can make it easier to build muscle and strength, by tryingto work at an optimal time to make progress.

    Well said, that's how I've been approaching my workouts more so for years since college. Listening to your body is vital. The body doesn't have all these senses and systems for nothing. The older I get the more in tune I get with my body. If I'm not feeling a certain exercise one day, I'll toss it. I don't have much energy, I may shorten the workout and/or lower the intensity. Sometime I may just skip working out completely if need be. Being a student of self and listening to what your body is saying can take you a long way. Great content

    I added this freestyle approach to my routine and i was surprised how it helps with my progression even though i still learning how to play better with recovery and stress periods
    Thank you

    Thank you. I have had people say I overtrain many times but yet my progress keeps going week to week for years.. I try to explain I don't do things with the same intensity each day and I dont ever go past what my instinct tells me I can, nor to I ignore my body when it says it needs some motion. Are we the only animal that says it's healthy to willingly ignore our bodys sense of when it needs to move and not move based on whatever some ridged scientific trend in research is saying?

      Yeah because we use the mind and thinking about how to train. Animals just train haha *life*

    whether you've asked for it or not
    maybe, even from something 30-40 + years ago

    I can’t get enough of your sensibility!! Honestly, each video is gold. You are so motivating and rational. Thanks for being ahead of your time.

    This approach is the most efficient way of making the fastest progress. However, it's an advance type of "programming".
    The problem for most people is that they don't know what to do, they don't know how to do it, they don't know what is enough or not enough (hence sets and reps by almost every coach and workout program) and so on. Add to it (possibly even more important) aspect of discipline, aka, emotional health, where habit doesn't exist, and most people will fail using this approach abandoning workout altogether.
    Just like at first I didn't understand why you won't give us sets and reps for your workouts, now I get it. But even understanding it, I prefer to rely on a (semi) strict workout program, especially in regards of what workout on which day. I said "semi strict" because once in a gym I can adjust sets and reps according to how I feel my body.
    Again, this is a great approach, but it's an advanced, if not highly advanced, approach. It's for seasoned athletes who have good interoception (ie. are attuned with their body's signals) and who have no problem with getting themselves to workout when they know it's time to do it.

      That's a really good way to articulate it and puts into words my thoughts about it too. I love the idea of this free form approach but like you I don't know if I could trust myself with it. It's a subjective thing too, feeling 'ready' to work out. Like am I really feeling too shitty or stiff to workout today or is it just my instinct to be be lazy telling myself that and infact if i go out and work out i'll BECOME ready for a good workout?
      But like you said, a veteran athlete like Mat is at the level of experience with this stuff and how his body responds to it, that he can benefit from such an intuitive/customised approach. To use a Schifferle'esque analogy it's like an accomplished musician improvising on their instrument, knowing what will work and not work by instinct vs a less accomplished musician that needs the structure of their sheet music otherwise they'd sound like shit just bashing away like a five year old at a piano haha.

      @RedDeltaProject  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would actually contend that this is not advanced at all, but it requires people to "unlearn what they have learned" (-Yoda) some o which is that whole "you can't trust yourself" nonsense that the Industrial Fitness Complex tries to convince us of.

    That’s something that so many people miss. They think cause paper says today is a leg day, that they have to train; even though they feel abs look like dog crap. Learning to listen to the body forces you to have to check out of technology and other things vying for your attention and check back in with yourself. Not an easy task in a world that wants to keep you distracted, but it is so worth it when you do. Great info Matt!

    Oh wow. I just commented on your other video about my legs. And then you added this one while I was typing. I done barbell Regular and Front Squats the other day as well as some Good Mornings and I can barely get up and down still lol. But had to skip leg day today. But all in all I know I got a hell of a workout the other day with my legs. Thanks for the videos!! They’re Awesome!

    Great stuff. Absolutely true and extremely realistic. I haven’t done Barbell Squats with weights in many years. Well, Last Wednesday I did about 30 front squats, 30 regular squats, And 30 Good Morning’s which I felt in my Hamstrings and lower back. I only had 100lbs on it. Well… just today I can get up off the couch without slowing down and wincing 😂. My quads were so sore I could barely walk. Even today are still a little sore. So yeah that window can change for sure. I should’ve started off a bit less extreme. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Love the Videos! Thanks a bunch Matt!👊🏼💪🏼

    most underrated approach. Quite difficult for a beginer, the key is enought consistancy and rigourous tracking of progress. But sometime you feel like shit and after 15 min warm up and first exercice it’s gone, other times you thinks it’s great and you kinda crush in the middel of your program, so self awareness and knowlegde is required.

    Since my baby girl was born I started training intuitively due the lack of time and sleep that fatherhood brought! And surprise I have improved a lot, specially in skills and strength...the only downside is that I lost a lot of muscle mass because I don’t spend any time on long sets and reps work outs so while my tendons are stronger than ever my muscles are kind stuck at the minimum necessary for keep myself training!

  • @TidusL2

    I started to do this a long time ago, before i did it, most of the times i would workout not recovered to 100%, my workouts were staggering a lot. (Hard to progress, even changing variables, such as exercises, reps, sets, tempos, nothing was really working great).
    When i started this approach, i was progressing steadily, mentally so strong ( i could push a LOT harder in the gym), the pumps are insane, basically everything is great.

    This is surprising news that shouldn't be "new". However, with us all acting like dogma chasing its proverbial tail, we get lost in the moment of "best..." and fail to trust our instincts over endorsements and influencers. This is another clarity into the cup video, Matt! Very, VERY well put! The results are obvious too. They are impressive.

    Makes sense as always matt., however how do you combine this with a busy life schedule? I barely have time to fit in3 short gsc workouts a week. If I don't schedule them then I'll miss them !

    • @RedDeltaProject
      @RedDeltaProject  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flexible approach works well for me as my workouts don't have a set time limit or amount of required time, so I can fit them in as I can throughout the week. I just get it in when / where I can fit it in

    Funny thing is that since the first lockdown I've been working out most days and have rarely encountered the DOMS that I used to. Whether this is because my body is more quickly adapting to the stresses, or perhaps I'm not killing myself in each session? But either way I'm making more gains than I have previously. I think listening to your body is key.

    • @caha9583
      @caha9583 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or not having to go to work every day is reducing a lot of stress, hence letting us recover better?

    • @Piccolo_Re
      @Piccolo_Re ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn’t really feel DOMs that often. They usually only occur once you start a new exercise or method and you’re muscles aren’t used to it. After a period of time you shouldn’t have DOMS that often unless you change something again.
