To those who did not grow up in this era. Just imagine, being able to go to a pub or club any night of the week and hear live music as good or better than this. Every night. The Sydney music scene was just amazing at that time.
Vale Andrew Smith. The night before deploying to Malaysia with the Australian Army in 1979. Civic Hotel Sydney. The Mentals rock! Arrive in Malaysia later the next day - the teenage Australian girls at Butterworth Air Base love The Mentals on the juke box at the pool, but have a totally different meaning for the song. Bwahahahaa!
One of my best memories: Narara festival “84, the cream of Australian music was there (and Talking Heads, Simple Minds, Pretenders, Eurythmics...), most of the 31,000 crowd had gone to bed, around 200 of us danced on to the Mentals on a balmy summer night til 3a.m. - magic
I was there also as an 8 year old kid with my parents. We stayed in a tent for a couple of days. I wandered around and saw a lot of interesting things that an 8 year old shouldn't see but what fun it was. If only I could go back.
Indeed...got there midnight Friday night...light rain..Talking Heads just started...Take Me To the River...next day round midday...Dynamic Hepnotics ...history in the making...great to be there...and remember...something ...precious...✌
It’s hard only being 22 and feeling like I’m the only one from my generation to properly appreciate the music of the 50s-80s, mentals are definitely up there in my all time favourites, aussie legends for sure
You are only one of the many silent appreciators! I used to think the same thing as a twenty something. Simple fact is that we know good music when we here it. As you get older, the appreciators of that sort of music, come out of the woodwork. 😂 true! Keep thinking for yourself and don’t follow the trend.
1980s Lismore nsw my Sister and I tried to make Martin plaza smile when they played at rsl club,if you knew mental as anything you know Martin never smiled...nope he didn’t crack..Rip Greedy we loved you all🙏💙🇦🇺🐨✊🏻
Does anyone think it’s strange how from the mid 70s until the early 90s there was a healthy... no, a BOOMING Australia music scene? Well you can thank Gough Whitlam and the Labor government. In 74 they began seriously funding Aussie cultural arts. They introduced FM radio to Australia and required stations play at least 10% Aussie content! Not only did it boost Aussie pride, but it generated vast amounts of international money for our country! Many of those bands, including the ones that achieved international recognition would not have stood a chance if not for Gough and Labor. It’s no coincidence that our music and cultural influence then died in the arse in the mid 90s when the Howard Liberal government removed the 10% Aussie content regulation and slashed funding.
The boom in Rap music and Rap like music ended the Aussie music boom.. White Aussie guys and girls looked and sounded ridiculous when they tried to adopt the New music..
Rubbish, it was a continuance of brilliant, world recognised music from the 50s and 60s, and continues to this day. Nothing to do with Gough but their incredible hard work playing upto 200 pub gigs a year! Gough Whitlam, what a joke! Tell them their dreaming!
Yep they went off loved it. I seen Greedy and the mentals at Yass just before Covid hit as usual the place went off managed to have a chat with greedy after the gig etc very grateful. Rest in music Greedy.
Saw these guys in 79 at a club in Brisbane, they were awesome, stage act was brilliant & funny, music was awesome, the whole place was rocking & couldn’t get enough of them.. RIP Greedy.
Vale Greedy. You kept it going all these years. The band can never get back together, even if Martin well. Thanks for 1977, tiny crowds, Get Wet and everything since. Plenty of great bands came and went, but never had as much fun as at your gigs. And it was your antics and smile that kept us all laughing. Lots of love and sadness pouring out today. Condolences to your family and the boys.
While several of The Mentals’ songs featured drinking as part of the subject matter, Most people misunderstood this and wrongly assumed they were simlplistic songs about carefree binge drinking . This song is about a guy struggling with coping since he lost someone , and he is drinking to wipe out the pain. ‘Too Many Times’ has similar subject matter in its lyrics, while Apocalypso is about nuclear Armageddon and Santa Claus hitting the bottle is a metaphor for society’s failures.
"Sometimes I wonder what all these chemicals are doing to my brain / doesn't worry me enough / to stop doing it again." One of my favourite lyrics of all time. 😂
To those who did not grow up in this era. Just imagine, being able to go to a pub or club any night of the week and hear live music as good or better than this. Every night. The Sydney music scene was just amazing at that time.

Simplistic, Ben. A good argument, but nowhere near reality.
The boom in Rap music and Rap like music ended the Aussie music boom.. White Aussie guys and girls looked and sounded ridiculous when they tried to adopt the New music..
There is a booming Australian music scene now too, spearheaded by Triple J. Like them or love them they have really helped establish Australian acts.
@@craigflanigan9926 Well who would you pick as the best 3 current Australian music groups / acts ?
