Pompeii was a busy Roman town swallowed by a volcanic eruption in 79AD. The entire town was instantly swollen by a red hot pyroclastic flow. The Ash made "plaster casts" around the bodies of the victims. Today its a archaeological gold mine and is still not fully excavated. So getting permission in ITALY in a Roman site, must have required various "permits" that were presumably "purchased" from the local authorities 🤣🤣🤣 Think it helped that the local Mayor was a Pink Floyd fan😉
It's 2 parts. The original track is the entire Side 2 of the "Meddle" and has an extended "Sound Dcape" in the middle. Part 2 starts with the "Sound Scape" and winds up back into the main riffs. (1 of the main riffs was pinched by Andrew Loyd Webber (now a "Sir") for the main theme of the stage show The Phantom of the Opera)
In the city of Pompeii is an Ampitheatre which was built to project sound during a play, event or speech during the ancient days of Rome. This was the first and only time any band has ever gotten permission to use this ancient artifact to play their music inside of.
Yay! About time you got back to Pink Floyd! After you do Part 2 (haha), listen to the whole song off of the Meddle album. They were in their early-mid 20's here. Can't wait until you do "Dogs" off the Animals album. 🤘😍
What would be brilliant, would be to watch part 2 when they're older. David Gilmour with Richard Wright performing this live in Gdansk. It's the full song so just fast forward the timing. Would be a great comparison of young & old
The reason it is in 2 parts is because the song opened and then closed the concert documentary about event in the ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. That movie is worth watching, it is an amazing musical statement. Also do Careful With that Axe, Eugene from it, wild! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Yep, there are two parts; the middle of the song is very dreamy, discordant, sounds like whales singing some people say. They achieved this by using their instruments in different ways. David Gilmour was 25 when this was filmed, in 1971. The other guys were around that age. Pompeii is an ancient city in southern Italy that was destroyed by a volcano in 79 A.D. All inhabitants were killed. This was part of a documentary concert; "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii."
Gilmour was 27,the youngest member in the band and the most crucial . Pompeii per video director and accoustics of course, but where better for a song called Echoes?! 🎸🐐💎
You should hear the live version in Danske Poland! I believe it's the last time it was played with keyboardist Richard Wright and never to be played again!
So, first, I like your reactions guys, but, you're certainly sober! 😂FUCKING stone, like me! So, it was in 1972, they were recording the legendary album, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON! They were arguing each other, like always, a lot of stress! So, with the manager, they decided to take a break! And, so the decided to make a live, without any audience! 😂😂😂😂Who's doing that! With the wall of amps! In some 2000 years old roman ruins! Yes you were right, it's the city destroyed by a Volcano, in year 79! Just, to explode, and be more cool after! 😂That's why you can see the bubbling thing, the statues, ruins! Watch the whole film, it's 1h30,they are talking about the recording of the album, which is one of the greatest album of time, 3rd most sold, ever, and, you can see them in studio, during the studio sessions! Super cool! A real artistic work! Genius! And, to ends up, there's a part 2 guys, at the end of the Pompeii film! Peace from France guys! 😂✌️🎸👍🇫🇷
This is take from the film 'Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii', which was meant to capture their 1971 stage act, though minus an audience (unless you include ghosts of dead gladiators, perhaps), and has the split of 'Echoes' book-ending the film, as an artistic device, I guess. The film also features some awkward self-conscious interviews with members of the youthful band. The equipment used was their touring rig. The amphitheatre at Pompeii was chosen because the director had visited it on a holiday, and thought the ambience would be cool; also the band liked the natural acoustic. There is a 'Director's Cut' that was release much later and has some shitty 'Space Odyssey' inspired CGI. Avoid. Other parts of this film can be found on YT, including performances of 'A Saucerful of Secrets', 'One of These Days' , 'Careful with That Axe, Eugene' and of course 'Echoes Part 2'. In 2015 Gilmour returned to the amphitheatre for a live concert (also on YT)., this time in front of a large (living) audience.
Pompeii was buried in Ash everybody died The Echoes that they sing about is about those that disappeared the albatross is the carrying over of those that could not be saved thus by singing the song at Pompeii became more poignant. If you look at history as what effects music and ideas is the more beautiful Society it is the more populous it is to produce better art. And Pompeii was destroyed in one afternoon. Boom goes the mountain.
@@lynnhoffmann247 😂 Attending a lot of makeup shows I've had tickets for the last 2 yrs. We have a long journey ahead of us ! haha
Umma gumma. Several species of small furry animals in a cave grooving with a Pict. Or something like that. Those days I would do stamps.
Just awesome!

This guys at the time had:
Roger Waters (bass) and Richard Wright (keyboards) 28 years old
Nick Mason ( drums) 27
David Gilmour (guitar) 25
So young!
Both parts of this song were played by Pink Floyd at a concert in Gdansk - here: th-cam.com/video/EMneCi9F_UQ/w-d-xo.html. It's great!
Listening to this song without a little herb is like eating popcorn without butter ... it's OK but it's much better with a little extra !
🤭 I brought 🍿 snacks! 🥰🐰
