The moon is a former friend who no longer lights the way Through an ever thickening lens I see only frightening things That's if I see them at all against the yellow wall You win again Uh uh Up the four flights of stairs On the landing a child's chair I suppose we can talk of that The future feels like the past I've lost all my keys The lock has defeated me You win again Uh uh The rectified has let me down It churns my guts and busts my skull I await the decade of Fortified pills and milky tea Restful days with polite company Pull that sheet right over me You win again Clean mind or clean body, choose one or the other Having both seems over indulgent You say normal people live this way They learned it from an early age It all seems so strange So strange I mumble, you win again I go grey, you win again I grow weak, you win again I lose my way, you win again You win again You always win You always win It's a game I must play It's what I must do So deal me in Deal me in, deal me in, deal me in, deal me in deal me in You always win Always, always win So deal me in, deal me in, deal me in, deal me in deal me in
There's a lot of references to the past and the future, describing the moon as a "former friend" and mentioning that the future "feels like the past". How he's "lost all my keys, the lock has defeated me" seems like a metaphor for something lost in the past. The lines "I await the decade of fortified pills and milky tea, restful days with polite company, pull that sheet right over me" seems to me like someone who gives up on trying to change either himself or his current situation, and turns his life into the dull and mundane. A feeling of the world not moving forward has been a central theme in previous songs, and if it is moving forwards, it's certainly not towards a brighter future. The song feels to me like someone who gives up on fighting "the man", and accepts the dystopia he finds himself in. But hey, that's just my 2 cents. Everyone will have their own interpretations of any work of art, and it's a dangerous path to consider some more valid than others. And as "Nothing" mentions, the song could be about growing old and watching the world move past you, while you reminisce about the past. Also, I'd like to mention how hauntingly beautiful I find this line: "Clean mind or clean body, choose one or the other Having both seems over indulgent"
I lost all my keys, the lock has defeated me. You win again
"I've lost all my keys, the lock has defeated me, you win again."
Shit man that fucking resonates.
This is such a discovery I can't put into words.
Such beauty can grow only under dark clouds.
It blooms at night...
These new tracks are hitting hard, and I'm liking them a lot. I feel Protomartyr have a grip on the present moment like few other bands do.
This song I will be listening to to the day I die
The moon is a former friend who no longer lights the way
Through an ever thickening lens I see only frightening things
That's if I see them at all against the yellow wall
You win again
Uh uh
Up the four flights of stairs
On the landing a child's chair
I suppose we can talk of that
The future feels like the past
I've lost all my keys
The lock has defeated me
You win again
Uh uh
The rectified has let me down
It churns my guts and busts my skull
I await the decade of
Fortified pills and milky tea
Restful days with polite company
Pull that sheet right over me
You win again
Clean mind or clean body, choose one or the other
Having both seems over indulgent
You say normal people live this way
They learned it from an early age
It all seems so strange
So strange
I mumble, you win again
I go grey, you win again
I grow weak, you win again
I lose my way, you win again
You win again
You always win
You always win
It's a game I must play
It's what I must do
So deal me in
Deal me in, deal me in, deal me in, deal me in deal me in
You always win
Always, always win
So deal me in, deal me in, deal me in, deal me in deal me in
one of the few bands who move forward with every new track. Great band
you win again, Protomartyr.
I can’t wait for this EP to come out tomorrow!!!
Take some time. Give this one enough listens, and you'll form your own private understanding.
i love this band
What a beauty.
Thanks proto. Keep the good work. History books will make sure we remember you, forever great.
The ep is so fantastic, good job boys!!
Just GORGEOUS...
PROTOMARTYR LIVE FOREVER

I love this
Yep, I am ready for this EP.
Soooo good!
Best band!!! 💙💙💙
Amazing
A bitter ballad to the mortal coil
Cool song
Deal me in.. you always win.
I love it!
Great stuff, and, as far as I can tell, it seems like this is their first true love ballad - with the passing of time as the 'you'.
Interesting, kind of relaxed and laid back, very different from Wheel of Fortune.
Exactly. I was thinking that this track seems "tired", but not in an uninspired or lazy way, rather intentionally.

LIKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Reminds me of Ugly Organ-era Cursive or something. Vocals definitely remind me of Tim Kasher. Good stuff.
Anyone got an idea what the lyrics mean? Who wins again?
