The secret to this series' success is that it is not really humor. It is serious fiction disguised as satire. These books touch on many dark themes that will make you quite sad if you stop to think about them. Brilliant series.
Yeah, i really don’t understand this narrative about Dungeon crawler carl. It’s so backward for me. I feel like it needs the Humor to not be like the most grimdark thing in the history of everything.
The audiobooks are AMAZING. The best narrator ever. They are such a joy to listen to while I work. I agree that this type of book is a great palate cleanser. It is also fair to say that you have to be an RPG fan to love the genre.
I'm glad you gave the books a chance. Like you, I had spent the last couple years presuming litRPG was not for me. However, things got a bit heavy in life so - like you even suggest here - I started listening to the the audio books on my long car drives back and forth between states (here in the US). I have now been converted and I love this series. Though, to be fair, I think a huge part of the appeal for me is in the BRILLIANT narration. On the same note, I needed to take a break from writing my big epic fantasy series and have instead shifted to working on my own litRPG series - HUMAN FALVOR - as it is serving as something of a psychological buffer from the weight of life events in my creative efforts.
Contrary to you, I love Terry Pratchett, and also don't mind humour at all in my fantasy. Loved Piers Anthony, loved Robert Aspirin, so there's that. Still you didn't say a single word that would make this series more appealing to me. Think I'll gladly sit this one out.
The reality tv aspect has been a trope of webnobels for a while now (like in Omniscient Reader Viewpoint or The Tutorial Is Too Hard). The humor is definitely rarer, these kind of doomsday series usually take themselves fairly seriously.
I also don't like absurd humor in books. But I don't think that this book is about the humor. I see it more as a satire and social commentary. And it reminds me of the Hunger games a lot
While I also don't like litrpg staying that's there isn't any tension because Carl's name is in the title isn't a good argument. Many series are named after the leads.
I’m in the same boat-don’t typically like books like this, yet find myself being drawn to it over and over haha. I’ll give it a try soon here. A side note-you may want to count how many times you said “I mean” in this video :). Could help for future videos.
@ Will do! I always get the physical copy and audiobook of everything so I can do either, depending on the situation. Makes my wife nuts that I spend double for every book lol 😬🤷🏻♂️
This series has grown from a cheesy guilty pleasure of mine to possibly my favorite series ever, about to overtake stormlight (depending on book 5). The book series is basically if a silly South Park episode slowly turned into Avengers Endgame over the course of multiple books.
I don't care about video games, so I didn't think this series would be for me. But I've read the first 5 books now and really liked them because Jeff Hayes is so good at narrating them. I don't think I would like the series if I was only reading them. At this point, I'm mostly interested in Carl's interactions with the world outside the dungeon.
Soooo are you telling me that I get to read a new good humor book [ with RPG and reality TV] after sooo many years after I finished Douglas Adams book series.... Yeah. Ok. I'll give it a go. In 2025...
Broo stooop the „tone“ ist not just „fun and absurd“. I mean it is in Part, but it has so many openly heavy and dark themes. Its fine that it wasnt your thing but i don’t think you really understand what it’s really going for.
Yeah, I feel like it is more about mental health and social commentary than fun and absurd. The fun and absurd is the coping method of Princess Donut and some of the others, more so than the whole book. I'd say something like Orconomics (a former SPFBO winner) is also a satire but again the humor isn't the point, the social commentary is the point and the humor is part of making that point (and I'd also recommend that book, but maybe not for LoaV).
@ i wonder if the humor is maybe brought to the forefront more because so many people liste to the audio-book. I can’t say because i didnt, but it would be interesting how DCC is interpreted differently when being consumed from different sources
Audio books and reading couldnt be more opposite in my oponion. I dont like how the booktube community pretends they read a lot when they really just wear headphones all day long.
When the narrator sounded like a mix of Captain Kirk, Kronk, and John Wayne I knew I was in for a treat.
It is crazy how similar to Kronk the narrator sounds. I even had to check if it was him haha!

While there are lots of humor in it, I would not describe this story as a comedy but as a drama.

I really need to try this series. Hopefully it works better for me.
I hope you will love it!
I love that you put out a fair and unbiased review of DCC even tho it’s not your fav genre . I love litrpg
Thanks! Considering I don’t like Cradle and not a huge fan of Pratchett I’m going to skip this one. I think I will feel the same as you.

I started reaidng this last year during a horrendous SFF slump and it was exactly what I needed. I recently finished book 7 and it was perfect 😍
@@damagedpages676 That is amazing to hear! 👊
Well done for giving it a go (and saving me the bother!).
You might love it!

This was pretty much my take as well. I've read one book. I may read more, or I may not. I found it to be... pretty decent.
I hear you, I also wasn't pulled in by the premise, but wound up loving it.

Just make sure you listen to it. It is 10x better!

I'm almost done with the first book and I'm having so much fun with it.
That is fantastic to hear!
Goddammit Donut!
I just didn't like the tone and humor of DCC, too bad
It is a distinctive tone and humour for sure!
lit RPGs u mean most Japanese light novels right? lol Feels like the author is a fan of those or video games or both

I'm with you on Terry Pratchett. I was recommended him 20 years ago and kept trying to get into his books, but i couldn't get into his stuff.
Pratchett is a genius but he is not for everyone!
@@libraryofaviking Douglas Adams is my Terry Pratchett. Just a one joke series of books with an incredibly depressing ending.
Pratchetts books are nothing more than witchcraft pagan occult symbolism. Dude was definitely a weirdo behind doors
Funny cuz I’m reading small god as many suggested. But I’m having a hard time to get into it.
