Coho $99 PERFORMANCE Cooler Ice Retention Test | Does it live up to the hype?

  • In this video I will be testing the ice retention capacity of the 165 quart Costco Coho cooler. A few things to note are as follows:
    -Daily temps ranged from mid to high 80's with one day in the 60's.
    -Cooler was not pre-chilled
    -Cooler was in the back of a truck bed for the duration of the test with no overhead obstructions blocking sun light.
    Overall, I recommend this cooler for large capacity ice/food storage.

    Saw this at Costco for $99 and had to buy it. For the size it's a great deal. Glad to see it performs well, going to Kern river next week. Can't wait to use this bad boy.

    Thank you so much for this video, I snatched me up one today for my food when we go camping. I usually camp only for 3 days but after watching this video I will go buy me another one just for drinks. I was debating on buying a 2nd one but definitely will be there again tomorrow for the other. Thank you again

      These get pretty heavy! A little hack I found is to buy about 10 pounds of dry ice and placing it inside along with the regular ice. Make sure to use cardboard as a barrier between levels.

    The secret to ice retention is using blocks of ice instead of loose ice cubes. Hard frozen bags of ice is good too. And fill the cooler as much as you can. People are too critical about ice retention but if you start with blocks of ice, almost any cooler will stay cold for 4 or 5 days and good coolers for over a week. But those loose bags of ice that you buy at stores is terrible for longevity. Anyways, nice cooler. I will keep that in mind if I need a big cooler.

    Thanks for the review!
    Interested to know how heavy that thing is. Can you be able to move it yourself?
    Also interested to see your gasket came out?

    • @thetrailoutthere

      It's pretty manageable to carry around when it's empty. The bulkiness is where it gets annoying if you carry it solo. At full capacity it will definitely require 2 people to carry but the carrying handles are comfortable and seem durable enough to handle it. As for the gasket, I haven't put them on just yet. I got them just in case the cooler didn't perform as advertised. Maybe in another video I will test performance with the gasket on. Thanks for viewing!

    Thanks for the review! I seen it at Costco but was skeptical as I have bought before and it didnt hold ice as long as it said. Just curious did you put the weathers stripping on it? Did it last longer?

    • @thetrailoutthere
      @thetrailoutthere  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't put it on yet. I only ordered the weather stripping as a backup option in case it didn't work. I just got back from a 3 day camping trip and there's still ice in the cooler. I used 7 bags total so not filled. Did you buy this same one before?

    • @dragunboi
      @dragunboi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thetrailoutthere no not brand. A different one. We are going on a 6 day camping trip so I think we will just go with this one because its decently priced and holds up to the test.

    What about dry ice 🧊 will it work?

    • @tomcatinaround
      @tomcatinaround ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A while back I was told by the local icehouse that sells dry ice, block ice, and cubes, not to use it in coolers. They said block ice is the best and to stuff the cooler full. I don't really remember why they said not to use dry ice, but I think it was because it doesn't melt. Instead, it turns into CO2 which we all know is dangerous. Also, you cannot let it touch your skin.

    Nice extra large cooler, and well worth the price. Costco does often have unbeatable deals on unique, quality stuff. However, it doesn't appear to be rotomolded, at least not of the same manufacturing process and materials as a Yeti, Rtic, etc.

    • @thetrailoutthere
      @thetrailoutthere  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Someone had pointed out the rotomolded part and you guys are correct. For what this cooler is, it performs pretty well. Hasn't disappointed yet.

    This years version is $79.99. I don’t need another cooler, but that price is very tempting.

    • @thetrailoutthere
      @thetrailoutthere  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to look into that one. Hopefully it's smaller. This one is kind of overkill unless it's a multi-day event/trip

      It’s 55qt. There is a nice gasket on this one. Built in bottle opener. On the Coho website if you would like to see it. There is a soft cooler as well.

    I was wondering about the COHO cooler. There were 2 coolers at Costco the 55 qt and the 165qt. I thought that only the 55 qt was roto molded. However, the 165qt appeared to perform nicely. Thanks for the video.

    • @thetrailoutthere
      @thetrailoutthere  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You know what, believe you're right about the rotomolded part. For what this cooler costs though it performs just as good as a rotomolded cooler. Thanks for the correction.

      I'm glad the you found the video useful. I haven't had the need to put the weather stripping on since the cooler performs well as of now.
