Great series, it would be great if you could go through some sets and explain why the possum gets caught. That would be a huge help on learning where to place the traps in relation to the baits. Thanks again and remember its a jungle out there...Gary
What a great series of videos so far. I've just started collecting the superannuation and I've hunted for most of my life, but I still have a lot to learn and I thank you for sharing your experience and ideas. With just the two of us at home, we don't get through a lot of meat, so trapping provides a good reason to get out in the hills. Best wishes....
A set, (raised being worse often) where a possum can get through fork in a tree risks a suspended catch. More so than nails through springs. Like setting on a fence or site where they can tangle the chain up short (why short fastened chains are usually undesirable also) do it enough and problems result. Something to keep to absolute minimum. Night-time checking traps can increase short term tally possibly, if putting a few days on a line it will likely compromise it, particularly if doing control work.
Only just found your channel. Loving the videos and the sharing of knowledge. I'm new to possuming. Can you tell me what months you skin vs pluck? Do you skin straight away or how long to do leave them to cool before skinning? And lastly any rule of thumb of which ones it is worth skinning vs not worth it? Thanks again
Now for about the next 4 months is when you skin them. You hang them overnight before skinning them. You really have to know the good ones to skin , normally the large brown possums or secondly the large grey possums. Beware . If you skin one that isn't worth skinning you virtually did it for nothing.
@@nakisteelo4761 Thank you. Any chance you can do a quick video at some point showing some examples of possums to skin vs not? Assuming you are still out possuming. I know prices are pretty low. Lastly how many times more do you reckon you get for skin vs just pucking it on the spot.
@@BjornDoherty a skin might be $18-20 (last time I looked) Fur was $5-7 an animal. Helluva lot less work in plucking This was all pre-covid though... no ones buying at the moment.
Good to see you back at it bro. I use an Eastwing Roofing Slate Tile hammer. Has a single point plus half claw and a knarly face. Point is great for getting out staples. Only use it cause I found it so costs me nothing 🤣🤣🤙
I've been looking at one of those. Drill and tap a little spike into the top of it to stop it slipping off wet stuff when pulling staples. And maybe put a slightly bigger round face onto it instead of the little square one.
It depends what you are allowed to use on Doc managed land they have rules about what you are allowed to use but aniseed or cinnamon are normally allowed and work or curry powder.
Hey bro. Loving the vids. Just wanting to know what type of knife I use for your possums. U had a vid a while back when u sharpened it. Just wanting to know what it is and where u get it Chur
There are two types. A (Mercator) which is made in Germany and has a carbon steel blade (can rust) They cost about $50,from a sports shop or farmlands. The second type is a immatation ,it is called a Sheffield it has a stainless steel blade, you buy these from farmlands for about $10 each. Both of these knives look the same, the Mercator has better steel but the Sheffield will still do the job. Beware they are easy to loose.👍

That's the one.All I was meaning was why loose a $80 hammer when you can loose a $30 hammer 🔨.👍
I use an estwing rock pick hammer. Works a treat in every way (But as you say- Expensive)
