Catian Slicer > Heavy thrusting sword attack. Can offhand another weaker scaling staff such as meteoric and benefit from the boost to specific spells while being able to attack with a weapon. Impaling thrust is also one of the best ashes of war that can stance break and the sword has 110 crit.
Hmmm... If they fix the bug that apparently makes non-magic-damage sorceries not get scaling, it'll be nasty with the ability to just drop Grav Missile on the ground as a combo mix-in to pancake anything smaller than a runebear. But I did think of throwing the Carian sword spells on it and they honestly work great. Carian Piercer is just a second, gigantic, magic-based Impaling Thrust that's ideal for targets that back off... Greatblades pair nicely with a stance break setup... And Carian Slicer is just a nice attack combo.
I have been running this sword and the carian thrusting shield, going into poke, bash, poke, bash -> swift glintstone shard and it has been effective for the most part
I did as well. But in bossfights it seemed to come up short. Two of them I ended up using clay man harpoon with ice spear. Two were pretty miserable experiences. This video sort of hints at why. Ended up respeccing to STR/int after getting the gazing finger.
The fact that the Main Gaughe is in the DLC and you can infuse it with Parry, means you can use MG and the magic sword in power stance, the magic is the gimik f the main blade.
I was hoping this would be similar to Heysel's Pick in DS3, but the sorcery scaling doesn't keep up. Heysel did a nice job with that pick, it hit hard melee but also did really good cast damage.
Flame Art infused Carian Dueling shield. If you keep shield strike on it it supersedes the thrusting sword’s ash so you’ll do a shield strike with B scaling in fire. Now you can cast cold sorceries and immediately reset the frost bite with a quick strike from the shield. Cast, poke, bash, repeat. Happy dueling!
Cool build, I was trying this out with a medium shield with the magic parry because the weapon has 110 crit and basicly use sorceries as ranged damage and to get wider swings on some attacks as well as setting up glintblades to posturebreak faster on enemies that are harder to parry. The damage when build as a critmage is ok but the flexibility of sorcery is definiatily there.
Makes me kind of want Fromsoft to give the same functionality to the lazuli glintstone sword (the one carried by the lazuli conspectus sorcerers) It's item description literally states "Apparently once used as a staff of sorcery". And the sorcerers wielding it use it to cast Carian Greatsword. I'd happily have it lose out on some damage and that glintstone pebble ash of war in order to use that 𝓬𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓷 R2 into sorcery combo.
My shot at using this weapon is with a cold banished halberd, 50dex+50int and radagon icon with quick chip sorceries. Its not original but it surly is a extreamly versatile setup.
I think the best build for this sword would really be "shieldpoker with a flexible ranged option" which sucks because theres much better options for that exact build
I like the idea of being able to use a weapon/sorcery catalyst in one hand and a seal in the other. I usually have the SoNaF in my main hand, and PoD staff and the Golden Order seal in my offhand. Swapping between spells is easy, swapping between the catalysts needed though can be a pain. There's an awkward delay when you try to swap catalysts after casting a spell. I would've thought this sword would make it easier to cast sorceries and incantations in battle, at least until I get the Staff of the Great Beyond? I also like to use Mimic Tear but the problem (or well inconvenience really) I run into is having to choose between having a seal or staff in my offhand when I summon it since it doesn't like to swap between other weapons equipped.
In PvE, I was using it with a shield and it felt quite good having so much versatility, but it's certainly a hard to use build. So many possibilities make you juggle a lot of things. I think it has a pretty high skill ceiling though: you can shield poke, have a weapon art, have any sorceries, you still can guard counter (R1 + R2 at the same time)... I think a really good player can do wonders with it and make up for the 10%-ish difference in damage. PS: You sound so much fluid when you improvise talking at the end! Have you considered loose scripts? My videos' voiceovers became a looooot better when I ditched rigid scripts for loose guidlines.
Did my first play through on NG+7, reallu enjoying my third ng playthrough with this sword and carian retaliation on my shield. If you are running this sword whilst trying to be meta you're making a mistake, it is a fun weapon and shouldn't be taken seriously. If you could change the ash of war maybe it would be true meta but as you can't its just a for fun weapon.
Built something with the final boss weapon since its aow seems to scale off int (?). Dex requirements for it are not far off anyway (24), put 60 in int, put the rest in str and enjoy a str/int hybrid that performs quite decently. Lord MH, carian as an offstoc. And you can still use the strong stuff should you desire, like cold star fist or the DMGS, at near maximum efficiency.
This weapons' sorcery scaling scales exactly like normal magic damage int weapons. First softcap at 50 and the hard cap at 80. Honestly the difference between 50 and 80 int is only 12%ish sorcery rating. This weapons magic int AR scaling has the same curve as it sorcery scaling so you can kinda go off of that.
I think this weapon needs more buffs. Like maybe a unique AoW that temporarly buffs weapon and spell damage that comes from it. I don't see much of an advantage in ER with a catalyst weapon. Take the thrusting shields, for example. There's not much benefit in combining a weapon and shield together but give it a cool moveset with block frames on each attack and you get a unique weapon.
I've been using the carian sorcery sword in my main hand and smithscript shield in my offhand. Also I'm running a high level quality build where I've got 60 vigor and 40 in everything else.
Hi Elden Ring University professor, I have a question that is not truly related to this video but could be a quick data check The 1.12 patch notes said they buffed the parries outside of Carian and Golden. How are the dagger parry timings now? And how do they compare to Carian/Golden? Just need to know that, I can't find reliable info online and just speculation, some say it's got Carian startup while other say it's a longer window.
Hey chrightt. Was just wondering if you could make an updated or new video regarding stnce/poise damage for weapons, Spells, incantations, and ashes of war since the dlc has come out.
I use slicer on it And yeah, you do less damage. But the versatility of three movesets without a single swap is absolutely incredible. As a bonus, you get to keep your jumping off hand heavy if you run it with slicer. So you have even more options.
I'm still kind of disappointing when I got this "sword" when it's actually a Rapier... I thought I could use Carian Slicer and it'll be buffed by it. It's a Magic Sword, that can let you cast spells. It's a neat item and weapon. Would've been nice if you could enhance spellblade in that method. Sadly, it doesn't even boost any type of sorcery, because it is a weapon that is not a staff... So its only purpose to me, is just an option to cast spells sometimes. You can't really use it as a full caster with a Melee option.
16:38 I don't know if the cut was because you sadly ended up loosing to his tricks, because the fight was too long and tedious from the heading, or because you thought him unworthy of any more screentime, but it was kinda funny to see everyone else getting a full clip and that guy just get discarded for the video.
would running a finger spell would be good? And maybe use the dex weapon so more can be pump into mind. I thinking maybe power stance it with Roger rapier. And use one of the taliment for the back step tailman. It would be much more risky of a build for sure but it is a build.
How would you optimise the rusted anchor? The options im looking at are pure heavy, duel wielded with the executioners great axe for crits, cold infused, or blood.
The weapon Rogier shouldve had Real talk i think those who like using Rogiers weapon just has a better option to outgrow from it. i think the casting feature should've been its Ash rather then its heavy attack. It looses alot of potential when not also being able to perform guard counters. Argueably though i think thats the point here is that it is a little mediocre in design choices because it isnt meant to perform highly as both a weapon and a casting catylist. Probably why we dont see enemies with it from a logistical standpoint, a proto type weapon deemed not enough to fill its role by the time we find it. But hey, being able to guard poke if people apply pressure up close is a better alternative to only having a staff and shield when pressed i suppose.
6:00 question : why not use the Great dragon crest shield talisman instead of the great jar? Gives you 5% tankiness for pvp and a lot more for pve. Also do you not switch out your crimson medallion after you get hit? I always switch it out since it’s only good for the first hit. Cheers
This is pure PVP build, so 5% tankiness for just physical damage is not much. I can definitely do hardswap but I make the builds for plebs that just want to try PVP.
So while breifly touched on in the video, would a powerstance build using a cold infused thrusting sword in the main hand also be good in pve/pvp? I know for pvp it loses the benefit of having another moveset (and the offhand stab) but does it gain any benefit?
It's so sad that Carian Slicer doesn't use the spell and the weapon to attack at the same time, that would give it more poise damage and a unique use for the spell
Is there any reason not to go magic or cold Zwei instead of the Royal Greatsword? Less Str requirement, less weight, AoW choices are better. Am I missing something?
hm, is shield spear and carian sword a nice combo? you can use the shield buffing spell to make the shield part actually good for two handing and trading, more accurately trading one sidedly with heavies in some cases, and otherwise rapier+shield is just good move set wise plus you have the sorceries for on demand ranged and heavier hitting attacks that rapiers lack. basically your primary mode is transitioning between longer range casting and... kinda filthy defensive play if ds3 is anything to go by while two handing the shield allows for more offensive pressure with the rapier and spells being very capable at finishing them off should you do that.
Everyone is comparing this to Blue flame but i don't see the difference? Blue flame doesn't cancel attacks into spellcasts any faster that i know of (compared to demons scar which does), so doesn't it suffer from the exact same problems as this weapon? What makes it different?
What if I prefer having a shield I can both parry with and poke from with my sorcery sword in my main hand, especially when I can apply Scholar's Shield to it?
since the weapon is so frontloaded isnt it better to just leave it like 50 int where is not worse compared to other staffs and try to do a more hibrid build with dex or str? like 50dex 50int moonveil main hand or straight up a dex infused weapon and buff it with scholar armament, idk something along those lines? suspicious cut at 16:38 btw lol
125 is better if you're more competitive. I think a lot of more casual people went 150 for easier DLC and PVE standard seems to be 150 which is why I'm using 150.
It's been 125 and 150 for a while. 125 builds limit more. 150 lets you have your cake and eat it too. A caster at 150 can have 60 vig, 80 int, and 40 dex with Radagon's Icon for max cast speed, for example. 125 stops this optimisation, which is a good thing.
Even with the 1.14 so-called "upgrade" to the damage scaling, it's pretty weak. If you're ANY int, you STILL lose a lot of damage. I tested it post patch and even at low int, several (no boost) staves did 1.5 - 2x as much damage casting finger sorceries than the so-called Carian Sorcery sword did. It's a great weapon for pvp if you use sorceries for utility AND powerstance thrusting swords, but a horrible choice for almost anything else.
Warning!!!! I was messing around with this sword and I realized that it ONLY works with magic damage sorceries. You can cast magna sorceries but they will deal almost no damage.
Great video! Want to play with this sword on my int build now
As far as spells that work well with a melee setup, I'm surprised magic glintblade or phalanx weren't on your list. Nice stuff though.
Smithscript video next please!
Chrightt is also the only TH-camr who shows duel losses. A true commitment to data and clarity
Do a Sword of Night build, I think it has a great potential
? That weapon has been shown to be extremely good on a lot of videos. Chase, Steelovsky, Lost and others. What do you mean YOU think it has potential?
@@sPaCe_NiNjA187 ey easy buddy, are you mad with your life?
@@sPaCe_NiNjA187 What do you think he means? He's not spouting riddles.
Makes me kind of want Fromsoft to give the same functionality to the lazuli glintstone sword (the one carried by the lazuli conspectus sorcerers)
It's item description literally states "Apparently once used as a staff of sorcery". And the sorcerers wielding it use it to cast Carian Greatsword.
I'd happily have it lose out on some damage and that glintstone pebble ash of war in order to use that 𝓬𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓷 R2 into sorcery combo.
Great job! Perfect weapon for old men, whose best friend is Mr. Fumble Fingers.
My shot at using this weapon is with a cold banished halberd, 50dex+50int and radagon icon with quick chip sorceries. Its not original but it surly is a extreamly versatile setup.
Or lorettas warsickle for a carian themed build and its one handed jumpingHevy into light attack true combo
I think the best build for this sword would really be "shieldpoker with a flexible ranged option" which sucks because theres much better options for that exact build
I wouldn't shield poke with this weapon. Not a chance with its garbage attack.
@@Chrightt yeah it does suck which is unfortunate because otherwise it could be fun
@@ChrighttCan it even perform a guard counter? Or would the spells come out instead?
You can still have the heavy attack (for guard counters) by pressing r1 and r2 together
have been using main hand banished knight halberd with the carian sorc sword. Its really really strong
Neat. It's still Regal Scepter and Moonlight Greatsword for me though.
Powerstanced with another poke sword, this thing has the prettiest moveset ever. +100 points for the style only.
Hey you're doing great keep going :)
Hi Elden Ring University professor, I have a question that is not truly related to this video but could be a quick data check
The 1.12 patch notes said they buffed the parries outside of Carian and Golden.
The design is very human.
Very easy to use.
The true math wizard
Friendship ended with Offstoc, Swift Spear and Carian Sorcery Sword new best friends?
I use slicer on it And yeah, you do less damage. But the versatility of three movesets without a single swap is absolutely incredible. As a bonus, you get to keep your jumping off hand heavy if you run it with slicer. So you have even more options.
Ill try this with rogier sword, since its heavy does a double poke, and i can have a more powerful variant of its aow as a sorcery
It’s good offhand with a main hand frozen needle
The frozen needle doesnt scale with intelligence
What do you think pairing this with Beloved Stardust ona 50int dueling build?
would running a finger spell would be good? And maybe use the dex weapon so more can be pump into mind. I thinking maybe power stance it with Roger rapier. And use one of the taliment for the back step tailman. It would be much more risky of a build for sure but it is a build.
Wished it was a light greatsword.
How would you optimise the rusted anchor? The options im looking at are pure heavy, duel wielded with the executioners great axe for crits, cold infused, or blood.
The weapon Rogier shouldve had
Real talk i think those who like using Rogiers weapon just has a better option to outgrow from it.
i think the casting feature should've been its Ash rather then its heavy attack.
Do you have a summery video ? I find this difficult to follow adhd got me messed up
the goat
6:00 question : why not use the Great dragon crest shield talisman instead of the great jar? Gives you 5% tankiness for pvp and a lot more for pve. Also do you not switch out your crimson medallion after you get hit? I always switch it out since it’s only good for the first hit. Cheers
This is pure PVP build, so 5% tankiness for just physical damage is not much. I can definitely do hardswap but I make the builds for plebs that just want to try PVP.
Chrightt can you make PVE powerstance whip build
Man I love this build! What would you spend points on if you were to scale up to 200ish?
So while breifly touched on in the video, would a powerstance build using a cold infused thrusting sword in the main hand also be good in pve/pvp?
I know for pvp it loses the benefit of having another moveset (and the offhand stab) but does it gain any benefit?
If you want to use the powerstance moveset of thrusting swords that is fine too.
Still waiting for that parry video
hm, is shield spear and carian sword a nice combo? you can use the shield buffing spell to make the shield part actually good for two handing and trading, more accurately trading one sidedly with heavies in some cases, and otherwise rapier+shield is just good move set wise plus you have the sorceries for on demand ranged and heavier hitting attacks that rapiers lack.
basically your primary mode is transitioning between longer range casting and... kinda filthy defensive play if ds3 is anything to go by while two handing the shield allows for more offensive pressure with the rapier and spells being very capable at finishing them off should you do that.
I miss ds3 pvp.......
.y plan was to use the new Carian Thrusting Shield
Everyone is comparing this to Blue flame but i don't see the difference? Blue flame doesn't cancel attacks into spellcasts any faster that i know of (compared to demons scar which does), so doesn't it suffer from the exact same problems as this weapon? What makes it different?
Would have been better if it wasn't a "guide" focused solely on PVP combat. Should have included a proper PVE build for clearing bosses.
How about build with "Staff of the Great Beyond"?
has the DLC changed the optimal Crit Build?
What if I prefer having a shield I can both parry with and poke from with my sorcery sword in my main hand, especially when I can apply Scholar's Shield to it?
Does spear talisman work with sorcery casting when using this weapon?
No, spear talisman only applies to physical pierce damage.
All fine and well but what happens on NG+ with two of them I wonder...
Hello Sir Chrightt! What do You think of Miriam's vanishing? I haven't used it for PvP yet but if You learn the timing it's pretty strong for PvE :)
It breaks your opponents lock on and has I frames. Test it out!
@@nmiloslavich Oh that's nice, I'll definitely have to go invading 😁
My build stolen thats amazing!
I am NOT building it no more lmao
Could you build the Milady pls 🙏🙏
since the weapon is so frontloaded isnt it better to just leave it like 50 int where is not worse compared to other staffs and try to do a more hibrid build with dex or str? like 50dex 50int moonveil main hand or straight up a dex infused weapon and buff it with scholar armament, idk something along those lines?
suspicious cut at 16:38 btw lol
So, is the meta level 150 now? I was just planning some builds at 125. I beat Messmer at 125.
"we have the Blue Flame at home"
5:20 what armor is the opponent wearing?
