I once met a colored man who was roommate with my dad when he was in the hospital. I was about ten years old, so it was about 1964. He was over 100 years old, and had been 5 years old when Lincoln freed the slaves. This Christian man had memorized the entire King James Bible from Genesis 1:1 to the last verse in Revelation. He could quote any passage you wanted word for word. He was a very godly man, and I hope to meet him someday in the Resurrection. Somehow, he was taught to read and write, even though it was illegal to educate a colored person.
