    The BMW 335i is an interesting car. For this review, we hop in the N54 inline six turbo powered BMW 335i four door! The last time we drove one of these it was a lemon, so it was great to do the car justice for this in depth look and review of now one of my favorite BMW's. Thanks for watching!

      335i having an open diff is done because having the LSD in there would make it comparable enough to buying an M3. Similar enough to how people mod a WRX to make it comparable to an STI. Was told that if $3-5 k of mods can make up for a difference of 16k between an M3 and it's 3 series counterpart that even less M3s would be sold. (Friend who works at a BMW as a tech) But some research shows that you can have the dealer put in the M series LSD. The cost is about 2300 + labor. But not many know that is an option.

    N54 335i all the way! It's what built my TH-cam channel to what it is today!
    148K miles -18psi over the last 4 years of ownership - no major issues 😀

      BMW Fanatic what is your general setup for 18 psi... dci, dp and e85? I'm sure you have a video on it but I didn't want to go looking lol

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evan Millett just DCI, JB4 G5 ISO on map 5, e30 mix with 93, CP-e charge pipe & Forge Motorsport Diverter valves (15-23psi springs added). Still on stock downpipes too (which do hurt me a little bit power wise, but it does great as is). Logs all look good and target that boost and hold it for the normal time with ease! I'm looking to upgrade to something bigger here in the next 6-10months from now, so I've been holding back on a few things lol.

    • @evanmillett6857
      @evanmillett6857 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BMW Fanatic stock dp?? So I guess you'd say it's pretty safe to run map 2 on stock dps? Here in va beach area e85 is easy to come by and the 93 is pretty good. Map 5 usually gets around 14-15 with just dci and 93 but I've been afraid to play with e85 and map 2 as a default because of stock dps. I like leaving it on map 1 as it feels smoother and more refined, so if map 2 was an option I'd be all over that... something bigger as in a different car or single turbo? That'd be cool. No one has really documented a single turbo transformation on TH-cam

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evan Millett Stock dps, yep! I would not recommend map 2 with stock dps as other parameters are changed and not just "psi" levels. Map 5 is an auto tuning map, so it's touchy at times. Yeah I'm the same way with the map 5 with 93 only. I'm looking to do the JB4 backend flash via MHD which will shift the fueling and timing over the the DME and then the boost raised by 2psi on each map. Smoother and of course more power. Map 1 then gets to be around 15psi and would feel great. And then the other maps upped up as well, etc. I'll be doing that next since it really isn't much at all to add 👍🏻

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evan Millett Still BMW, so either a '14 550i with the N63TU (V8 TT) or the '14 X5 50i SUV with the same engine, just trying to decide on which really for my needs

    High pressure fuel pumps are part of direct injected gas engines. My Saturn Sky's ecotec engine has the same thing. Usually when the stock fuel setups aren't enough, you add a secondary port injection system.

    • @zachmockett7566
      @zachmockett7566 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm assuming you own a 135i. Do you know if the fuel pump setup is the same as the 335i? (low pressure pump in the rear, high pressure up front) I REALLY want a 135i at some point, but with the fuel pump issues that the 335i has; i would have to get 128i instead because it's way too expensive to replace the pumps.
      Let me know if you have the answers!
      Cheers from a fellow BMW owner

    • @jhchickens

      Michael Cohen yea that's what i was thinking. No doubt a warranty is great, but unfortunately the 135i will be much more than 10 years old when I actually want one. (probably in 2 or 3 years since I just bought my e46 330xi)

    The best choice over 335i - is a 335xi (or 335i xDrive). It has way better traction and you can drive in snow no problem.
    Rear wheel drive BMW - it's such a pain to drive when there is at least an inch or two of snow on the road...

    @Justin-tn7yp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your friend should consider an MHD tune, with a piggy back JB4 a lot more power, options, and remote tunes! Since COBB doesn't support the n54 anymore that is. On wards, idk why all these people in the comments are giving so much hate, unless you've driven an n54. The main difference between the 2jz/N54 is iron/aluminum block. They do share a lot of things, with being bulletproof motors and handling high hp/PSI, I would know bc I've been building my friends for a year now, post my reliable e46 m3, i'd say the 335i's weak point is just abt everything but the motor. Oh also the "dip stick" is on idrive, or the e-gauge, an odd feature but was designed to keep up w/ Porsche on an engineering level. Not a fanboy, just someone that has spent countless hours with the car.

  • @E92M3
    @E92M3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    the reason for open diff and the undertuning of the turbos was because it would be too close to the M3. I had an e92 335i for 2 years and i just purchased an e92 m3. both are good in different ways.

    I'm surprised David likes the automatic trans. I have quite a few friends who drive 335s and specifically the N54 which was 07-10. Everyone says the auto sucks. The 6 speed is a must to properly enjoy this car.
    Nonetheless it's a phenomenon motor BMW made. Just a few bolt on (intake, chargepipe, downpipe, exhaust and either a jb4 tune or a pro cobb). My goddddd this becomes an absolute animal.

    The lack of dipstick is not that huge of a problem it has two level sensors and one or two oil pressure sensors. You can get an oil stick mod for it if you really want it, it is pretty convinient because it says how many oz or ml to add for full.
    Also if you got it with DKG (DCT) then it has conventional left paddle pull downshift...

    Seven thousand in repairs on the N54 lemon? I thought that was just regular N54 maintenance. These engines will make 2J-like power, but the stock turbos, injectors, and high pressure fuel pumps seem to always be problems. The good news is that once you take care of these things, it is quite reliable. Due to these issues, these cars have gotten incredibly cheap. So cheap that picking one up and doing all of these upgrades seem more and more attractive.

    N54 engines are definetly the most unreliable cars as far as injectors going bad. Turbos go bad, fuel pumps go bad", wAterpump goes bad etc...thats why i sold my e90 lci 335i. If your not prepared to spend 5k at any given momen in repairs STAY AWAY

      i wonder how many more comments you gonna post about reliability. Maybe you got a lemon ? 4 years driving a 10 year old car. OEM injectors, HPFP, LPFP, only thing changed since 60k miles is water pump, its above 100k miles now. You keep telling your self how bad the engine is, eventually engine will weed out the weak sauses. Glad people like you are not related to BMW anymore, WEAK.

    Hard to believe a Cobb tuned n54 running 440hp maybe to the crank, better running MHD or jb4 for the n54 my MHD tuned n54 is 450whp/472wtq running about 21psi. Hoping to be closer to 500 after the inlets I added to the car. Nonetheless dope car and I also love my white 4 door sleeper BMW

    Interesting. How would a diff change the cars' characteristics in the case of this tuned 335i? Nice review. PSS could easily be the best street tyres. Luv 'em. Great vid, loved the humor as well.

    You should drive a new 335i with de DCT transmission if you find these shifts fast, the DCT shifts twice as fast as the normal auto

    BMW put an open diff in the 335 because it would've been too close to the M3 in performance

    BMW is known for irrationally putting their best engine in a non-M car. The weird move with E30 M3, when they had a 2,5 liter inline6 and they dropped a 4banger of the same displacement in it, which had no torque, not even mentioning crazy service intervals and internals out of insane space age materials. Or when they came with the ridiculous V8 M3 when pretty everyone knew, there is no way around turbos for the future M models. It sort of felt like they got stuck a bit. I am not hating on the V8 in the E92 M3. I just know how they could not even use it for racing and went back to the foundry and got some old M5 castings... yes every winning M3 E92 had an old e39 M5 V8 under the hood. Reliability does not count in marketing. In racing it sorta does.

    I wonder if the CEL runs it in limp mode? Wouldn't it run better if you remapped the ECU so it cleared the CEL? I'm sure you would get better response out of the car.

    so I'm hopefully buying my first car this weekend, it's a 99 prelude with a busted h22a4 but it comes with a JDM h23a VTEC. the car itself has 137xxx miles the h23a only has 40xxx. I don't know much about Honda's and I really want to do one right and give it the love it deserves. was wondering if anyone had any helpful advice or tips. Thanks in advance.

    can someone explain to me why so many modded cars in the US arent running cats? here in Australia you can get fined $10,000 for not having them but in the US it seems to be a very common mod. Are the penalties not severe or do cops not care?
