truly wonderful, DM! it reminds me that driving back from DC i heard the Jonathan Schwartz radio show, and he played George doing his version of Someone To Watch Over Me in the brisk, aggressively upbeat Gershwin way, and Jonathan said it was his dad's partner Dietz that implored George to slow it down. he did, it's now a ballad.
That version is coming in the near future from me. I take it down a notch, particularly in the second chorus, or what Kern called the 'burthen'. I like that it has a little lift to it to give a sense of what Gershwin wrote and what it needed to be for Gertrude Lawrence to put it over ("she can't sing but who cares" - Agnes DeMille) in 1926 (I think). I also think that Gershwin played these songs as party pieces and so they're aggressive and attention-holding. Couldn't croon and get all lush and syrupy from the stage until the miking developed-a big reason the music of Broadway started to feel like yesterday's Readers Digest to the youngin's.
Wow. That's my favorite Gershwin solo. Well done I like the tempo. You have more courage than I, who bought those transcriptions by Wodehouse but dare not try to play them! You must be a Gershwin fan, have you ever heard Jack Gibbons? He is a virtuoso concert pianist and he's done his own transcriptions of just about everything Gershwin played and wrote.
