    Nice Alec! We use one of those red “kits” at work too. I was hoping you showed the thickness gauge on the front corner of it. There are only 3 thickness sizes in that kit.

    Hi Alec. Another variable to throw into the O-ring discussion is with spools of O-ring material you can buy 3/16" cross section and also over sized which is about 10 to 15 mill larger, the purpose of this is to stay in a worn groove during assembly. then you add high temp options (silicone and Teflon) then hard and soft duro options You can fill a warehouse with all the possible options. Regarding your box of all sizes If all you do is one thing then it is a waste but you never know what might come through the door tomorrow. A complete set is good to start with then buy extras of the ones you run short on. Take care Owen m

    Many people never notice, but if you buy Apeks regs the dust caps come with a spare DIN 1st stage O-ring; it's black and fitted into a groove just below the eye for the leash on a black plastic cap, but it is there! Apeks cylinder valves also come with a similar spare O-ring inside the end of the knob. Useful if one goes AWOL on the boat!

    • @mikkosport2300
      @mikkosport2300 ปีที่แล้ว

      Note that Apeks uses DIN fitting O-ring which fits only to Apeks regs due to slight size difference with common ones.

    • @timgosling6189
      @timgosling6189 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikkosport2300 Actually they fit any DIN regulator, but I'm not going to get into the whole DIN v A-clamp debate, even if DIN is so clearly the way ahead 🙂

    • @Teampegleg
      @Teampegleg ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timgosling6189 Mikko Sport is right. Apeks uses a 111 sized o-ring while standard DIN is 112. Scubapro also uses the 111 sized o-ring but they use a PU which is stronger, but less resistant to UV.

      Not many know about the spare o-ring but it also has to be replaced and checked. I prefer keeping a plastic bottle of all key o-rings in my save-a-dive kit. It's new and ready to use. What do you think Tim? Lots of feedback.

    Hey Mr Peirce! Big fan. Just curious, how often should we be lubing up our O rings? Once a season? After a few months of inactivity? Or before every trip?
    Thank you in advance!

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว

      O-rings only need lube when installed and then only moving / dynamic rings. If your doing a service and re-use o-rings, thats a big risk as the cost of new rings are a few dollars compare to the full cost of the entire service. Do drivers re-use tire valves when buying new tires? Some maybe, but not smart drivers.

    I wish companies would give specs of the o-rings in the exploded parts view instead of just the Part # because you end up having to buy an $0.50 O-ring for $20 from the manufacturer.

    Alec, thanks for another great video. I've got another equipment question for you. I have a bcd in excellent condition that is set up perfectlyfor me. The only problem is I bought it when I was 130lbs heavier. The last time I went diving I couldn't get the cummerbund tight, especially at depth, and the tank kept shifting on me during the dive, which was exhausting. I'm thinking of ordering a two size smaller commurbund to replace the original one (I'm going from an XXL to L). The bcd fits good around my shoulders (I'm kind of burly in the shoulders and narrower at the waist). Have you had divers try these sorts of modifications in the past with success, or am I invariably going to have to bite the financial bullet and replace an excellent bcd? Thanks for any advice you could send my way. Best, Josh

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congratulations on losing the weight, it will make your dives much easier. Changing the bun is the best way to keep your BC and tank secure to the body. Most makes have cumber bun lengths so you know if the L is comfy or snug. Make sure you can return / replace it if the size is wrong. If the current XXL is not going to be reused, try tightening it, sewing or a nail gun! This will give you confidence the new bun length will work. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Very good video
    I can just add that O rings is a standardizrd component and the sizing is resumed by a number, for example, a -263 O ring will have 7 1/4" ID x 7 1/2" OD x 1/8" wire and that for any manufacruere and any compound,
    this stndardization is also applied to metric size orings.
    The problem with oring kits is that some sizes are widely used while others stays in the box, it is the problem for about any domain of application, you should be vigilent and reorder the most frequently used ones to keep your oring kit functionnal.
    There is also Oring splice kits that are very useful too, you taylor the O ring to your application from a rubber cord that you splice to your application, this usually used for specialized applications

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For all scuba gear, only standard rings are allowed, no splices. Still good to know for the viewers.

    Just double checking here, but based on some quick searching, it looks like Viton can be used just fine with regular air. So there wouldn't be any disadvantage to buying Viton, other than price, especially if I think I'm going to dive nitrox frequently. Is that a fair assessment?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Viton is mandatory for EAN and works perfectly fine with regular air for a sight cost difference. If you can, use Viton o-rings for your entire setup.

    I have a scubapro a700, and it is about a year now. I want to get it serviced. Some folks say sp reg due to the high quality of orings, the service interval is every 2 years, idk if the info is accurate

    • @tijuan807
      @tijuan807 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is true that you only need it serviced every 2 years or after 100 dives. I don't know if it's exaclty the O-rings that are higher quality, I guess there are more factors. In any case, Scubapro makes excellent regulators and a700 is the best one (in my opinion).

    • @Teampegleg
      @Teampegleg ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the major brands have gone to two year service intervals. Many still recommend an inspection every other year in between service.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All o-ring are high quality or they will fail quickly. Reg service timing is a function of age and # of dives primarily. Some divers like my friend Jim do 100 dives a year others maybe 20/yr. I view service is like taking care of your heart pacemaker, would you go cheap on what keeps you alive or get the best possible maintenance to keep you going and going.
