William Hendry, join the Royal Marines age 14, and became a musician in the band of the Gunnery school, HMS Excellent. The band was moved around the fleet, and he was with the band ,when it was sent to HMS Bulwark. He was 19 then.
He was my Grandmother's Brother,so was my Great uncle. Thank's for the tribute.

Thank You for this tribute. My Great Grandfather Edmund Finn died on it. As I've served in the military in my time, I've inherited the last postcard that he'd sent to my Great Grandmother.

Sadly the 'Andrew' (RN) failed to learn their lesson. Several of our battleships lost at Jutland perished for the very same reason - shells stored in corridors, combined with flashback from German shells hitting the turrets and igniting rounds on the hoists.

There are two navigation buoys in the river Medway. Bulwark North & Bulwark South, marking the seabed remains.

Now designated as a war grave in the River Medway and buoyed as such , not far away is the site of the wreck of the Princess Irene a minelayer that also exploded with great loss of life and both disasters have memorials to them in the Navy part of Woodlands cemetery in Gillingham .
