Great video. I especially liked the Gymnopédie No. 1 section. Janet exemplifies the simple joy of skating like no other. Thanks for posting.

Janet is still the finest female skater of all time.

Completely agree! And she gets credit from many, many skaters for being the greatest of all time. Janet sometimes get overlooked because her competition years were between Peggy Fleming and Dorothy Hamill. Janet was a 5 time US Champion but always came up just short of winning at Worlds and the 1972 Olympics. And Dick Button LOVED her! The short program was created partly because of Janet Lynn. There were skaters like Janet who had a difficult time with the compulsory skate and were always behind going into the free skate. The short program helped even the field. I think she regretted her early retirement. So glad almost all of her programs are on You Tube.

Light as a feather. Miss this type of skating. Also miss Dick Button commentary

Her opposite direction double salchows starting at 1:58 kinda blew me away. =)

Beautiful height on those jumps. I think there's little doubt that had she skated in the modern era, she would have had all of her triples.

She was so far ahead of her time! Perhaps the greatest skater in history never to win an Olympic gold or World title - up there with Sasha Cohen.

...and two Olympic medals (regardless of color) is nothing to sneeze at.

Many other skaters and coaches consider Janet the best female free skater of all time regardless of Olympic or World titles, as do I. I was 19 through my early 20s when Janet was competing in the amateurs, and although I had been infatuated with Peggy Fleming, Janet begin my co-favorite, then my favorite as time went by. I've followed all the subsequent skaters, and neither Dorothy Hamill nor Michelle Kwan, nor any of the others had the magic that Janet had. Only more recently have Yuna Kim and Carolina Kostner rivaled her artistry. Currently, I like the style of Amber Glenn who has a shot at the top if she can bring up her technical ability and consistency. I know she's working on a triple Axel.

If she had pulled in on that triple she would have made it.

She would have won the 1968 Olympics if she hadn't been such a heavy smoker since age 10.

What?! You totally have Janet Lynn confused with someone else...or you think you're being funny. You should delete or retract your erroneous comment. Janet's international debut was in 1968. "Her" main Olympics was 1972.

@@Person-mh6xq I think he is confusing her with Tonya Harding or something, lol! Yes Tonya Harding might well have won the 92 and/or 94 Olympics if she weren't a chain smoking asthmatic. The amazing Lynn's problem was compulsory figures, and occasionaly competitive nerves, not smoking.

I never knew she was a chain smoker. She seemed to attack this program right from the get go. The double axles were spot on, and that flying sit spin was extremely high. I'm surprised her parents let her get away with smoking, unless she did it on the sly. She doesn't seem out-of-breath at the end of the performance since she threw in a difficult combination. Did she ever quit smoking?
