  • Local businesses in Mallacoota are crying out for tourists after the region was this year hurt by both bushfires COVID-19 restrictions.
The small coastal town, bordering Croajingolong National Park in regional Victoria, was devastated economically by both disasters and residents have pleaded for Australians to return to inject life back into the region.
Sky News Australia spoke to business owners who were forced to close when foot traffic disappeared.
Bucklands Jetty Boat Hire owner Peter York shut the doors of his business in March after attempting to reopen off the back of the bushfire recovery.
But when COVID-19 hit, the government forced him to close under radical social distancing restrictions.
“We were open in March after the fires went through,” he said.
“By the end of March they shut us down.”
