Building a Model Railway - start to finish

  • This video is an example of what can be achieved in building a model railway from start to finish. There are many TH-cam clips which provide detailed information as needed. It should be remembered that a model railway is what you would like to run and not what a 'perfectionist', sometimes referred to as rivet counters says it should be. You will notice in this clip that I like to run diesels from different era's, different lines and differing rolling stock. You will also notice a German loco in the typically English setting. Hope you enjoy it and it gives the viewer a few ideas.

      Thanks for the comments. One thing I have learnt over the years in building model railways is to have strong visual features, as space allows, such as the viaduct, market town, shunting yard and engine shed/turntable, in addition to a reasonable 'run' of track. Your right about the music era which I more easilly appreciate, rather than the shouting efforts of todays music.

    The music fantastic😁 remind me in VHS tapes my dad used to keep under his bed the ones he used to try and hide from me and my mum lol you say it's finished but it's not! I'll give you a weight before you alter it again add to it, never be finished it will be a lifelong thing mate! Enjoyed and have fun😀

      Thanks for the comments Lee. Your right about the lifelong thing. There is always some little addition/inclusion which will enhance the layout, not to mention new loco's or rolling stock. As for the music, I have obviously given my age away. Your Dad's choice of music is, what should I say - exceptional. Music helps to engage the viewer in the experience. Much prefer music to those posts which focus on uninformative comments.

    Excelente trabajo y buena música,tanto de carpintería como la maqueta.
    Lo único que no me acaba de convencer es que se ve todo demasiado limpio, los edificios no están envejecidos y se ven demasiado nuevos y limpios y lo mismo las estructuras ferroviariarias y eso en la realidad no es así.
    De todas formas no deja de ser un trabajo excepcional.

    Nice layout, but far to clean but a layout is never finished and that bis the fun. Like the structures with their destincrive Brirish flair. Also the landscape resembles my memories of the Midlands or southern Scotland. Built for 12 years an HOn3 layout and now since 1987 an slighly larger -but much more detailed - Sn3 layout. Only point of criticism the use of German steam engines, cars and lorries on the layout. Did I miss something, have we won the war? 😉😉😉.Keep on the good work.

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the interest. Whilst the layout is based around a fictional English village setting, I also love the detail of Roco locomotives, hence the German loco. All vehicles are from the Oxford Diecast range and are entirely British. As you say, a layout is never really finished with opportunity to further develop individual dioramas over time including weathering to the extent desired. Good luck with your continuing Sn3 project. Must be hard to find a good range of ready to run loco's / rolling stock.

  • @MrVinnyh
    @MrVinnyh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    start to finish, I have never finished a layout, I now live on a narrow boat 40' long x 6'4'' wide (a bit of envy as I lack space/room) so there might be a chance I will nearly complete a railway🤔. But there is always something to add or take away. I did enjoy seeing the frame work for the layout stacked up. Good to see you didn't build a Metcalf town like so many layouts, the Hornby Scaledale /Bachmann Scenecraft look far better, added with the sloping bases for your buildings, looks so right! weathering next job? ☺👍🏻

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feeedback. You must be facing real challenges in building a layout on a longboat. Agree with you on the card buildings. They just lack the 3rd dimension and are susceptible to heat/moisture over time. There is some subtle weathering, which does not show up clearly on the video. But as I have the layout up for sale, past experiences show that some purchasers prefer the 'pristine' look (especially the skaledale buildings), so won't be doing any more. Personally I think weathering adds to the finished project which I would do more of if the layout was to be retained..

    It looks so good do you run what you want or do you run trains in the theme of it

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. Trains are almost exclusively set and run across the period 1940-1950's in a UK country setting. However, There are a number of loco's which I find particularly appealing, such as the German DB01 series, some later models from the UK outside this time frame, and yet to be acquired models of the USA Santa Fe in A&B units in warbonnet red along with an Australian NR Class model of the "Ghan" and "Indian Pacific". These 'out of synch' models are not a permanent feature and are mainly displayed as static models, but then a model railway is what you want it to be, not always what it has originated from. There are many great examples of locomotives worldwide which I find delightful in rthe world of miniatures and will occassionally collect them as they appeal to my sesses and appreciation of railway traffic.

    The switches for the turn out, lever point control box, do you have any info on what all it consists of? I love the look of it. Can it be set up for manual and programmed? I see you sold it though.

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Aaron, thanks for the interest. The lever switches are manufactured by DCC Concepts in the UK and can be purchased either singly or in packs of 6 or 12. I use them with manual activation in mind, which is really what they are designed for. The levers cannot be activated in any other way. However, you can still use digital point motors which can be activated from another control source, but that tends to negate the purpose behind having a lever type operation which is designed to mimic a real life function. If you need any help with the point motors, I have found the staff at DCC Concepts to be very supportive. Link is - www.dccconcepts.com/product-category/the-cobalt-collection/cobalt-signal-levers/ . All the best with your layout. Whilst this layout has been sold I will be starting a new project shortly and using these lever switches again. love their appearance and point activation method.

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although the layout is set in the UK, I also love well made models, of which the German loco is a feature. Made by Roco it is a superb model both in its manufacture, running and sound functions. It is of course quite out of context, but I love the model. You may also have noticed the cream and blue Pullman coaches modelled along the lines of french VSOE. They are superbly fitted out internally with lighting. Also plan to eventually acquire a Santa Fe diesel in red warbonnett with both A and B units, as well as a model of the Australian 'Ghan'. These will not always sit on the layout but will be run occassionally. Unfortunately I dont have access to other modellers with country specific layouts.

      Hi Andrew. Thanks for the kind comments. Trackbed used is twofold. Mostly I have used "Trackrite Flexible Underlay". A superb flexible rubberised road bed which I am assured will not deteriorate over time and is excellent for sound deadening. Whilst it is also available in flat sheets, the expansive area around the engine shed/shunting/storage areas, I opted to use 3mm thick Yoga mat from KMart. A cheaper option (about $6 for a 600mm x 1800mm sheet) and also very durable as it carries human weight. Both work well but I would opt for the Trackrite as it has slightly better sound deadening qualities. Photography and woodworking are my other interests and although the video takes a little while to assemble I enjoy that side of the hobby. All the best with your modelling interests.

      Hi Steve and thanks for the kind comments. Build time was about 12+ months. But it helps when your retired and can devote 2/3 days a week to the project. I tend to acquire all the materials / models before starting construction. Having everything on hand means delays due to overseas postage can be kept to a minimum. This is my 11th layout as I enjoy the building process, a little running time and then on-sell ready to start the process all over.

    The vehicles scream late 1950s to the end of steam. Am I right? And also could you tell me if you’re running it 12 volts DC or 15 volts AC and DCC.

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The era is right - late 40's to late 50's - decline of steam and intro of diesel. Although that is not entirely correct, as I am also running a Class 66. Power is through a Roco Z21 DCC unit which allows me to vary the voltage, but this layout runs on 16v. AC/DCC has so many advantages including sound functions and running multiple loco's on the same line. The later feature would probably not work for you with a micro layout restricting the number of loco's which could be run simultaneously.

    Hi Richard, I made a comment a year ago regarding your layout which I was very impressed with. I always want to have a layout made for me as I am not a great modeler and do not have the time. Do you know of anyone that would be interested in making a layout for me? It will need to be made for travel as I am in North Queensland, and I can arrange transport for this. My Budget would be up to $ 20,000 and would like an English setting. If you can help me, please let me know. Regards Gary

      Hi Gary, Thanks for the interest. I have just sold my last layout and am about to start the next after having just moved into a new home, which was to be my last layout, but that doesnt always work out. If you would like to give me your email address I can give you a fuller reply. As you have identified, transport to N Qld is a significant distance. My address is richard at berryfamily.id.au . in the meantime you might like to have a look at my recently sold layout - th-cam.com/video/7ygU5JYlwKs/w-d-xo.html Regards Richard.

    What are you going to call your layout? My micro layout is Walmington-on-Sea after the location of Dad’s Army.

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This layout will be called St James, but I similarly like to name layouts after significant places. Last layout was called 'Kings Abbott' where Hercule Poirot retired to. Previous layout names included 'Midsomer' - no explanation needed - and 'Pemberley' after Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice. I like the Walmington-on-Sea title.

      Your right about that. This is the 11th layout I have built and onsold over the last 15 years, each time making just a little profit over and above replacement costs, with these small profits being ploughed back into the next project. If I were to start again, probably would only have a very humble layout. Used to be able to putchase a nice loco from the UK for about £60/70 a decade ago, but a similar model nowadays runs to just under £200/AUD$400 and not much better technically speaking. All the best with your next project. Dont give up.

    Hi Richard. I love the layout, it looks amazing... I wish mine looked like that, but work and family life gets in the way a lot. I see you have the same fuel tank kit that I have and noticed the "dials" on yours. I am just painting and prepping them ready to install onto my layout and noticed the "dials" Can I ask where you got them from? I have seen a number of pictures with them shown and thought that they must be decals that are supplied with the kit, but mine does not have any in it and they are too small for me to paint, so hoping to track some down. Thanks Darren

    • @richardberry9984
      @richardberry9984  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Darren, Thanks for the kind comments. The Oil Depot I used is a Ratio model 529 which included fine etched brass fittings, including the dials. I painted the dial background with a thin coat of white paint, allowing the brass gauge markings to show through on the surface. I then highlited the gauge needle by painting it red. I'm not sure if the Ratio model 530 (which doesn't come with the 'office') has these etched brass fittings.

      Thanks for the Jumble Lane reference. I have checked it out and seems like it will be a good enhancement for the TT. I believe the manufacturers for both Heljan and Walthers are the same (I have used the Heljan product before, but with limited success. The electrics for the Walthers TT work extremely well, although they do have their quirks.
