But the codec they use, i think it's a specialized voice codec. unlike normal ones like mp3 voice codec is very fast and compact, so it can reach the other side as fast as possible without eating much bandwidth. but it usually cuts away everything above and below human voice range (plus some extra). Also these things usually compress the volume (apply compressor) and cut the silent bits so it sounds more clear. today i've heard guy playing guitar in vr chat. and while it was ok, it was like listening to a guitar over the telephone with occasional lag. and guitar is often played lower then violin so...

I think it was just too noisy. If your focusing on trying to figure out what everyone is saying while talking over the music with somewhat distorted voices from cheap mic's and internet bit-rate, then it would be hard to recognize the song right away.
