      Highranger without further ado, first and foremost, lets get started, lets jump right in, and my favorite useless expression: "i will go ahead and..." go ahead xan always be lect out completely with no change in meaning or anything. Ok, one more "basically". When someone says basically every few sentences, you know they are insecure and unsure if what they are saying is valid.

    I nearly backed this because I wanted a hardware knobby filter, delay and reverb, but I ended up delving into Eurorack instead.
    I like it, and it's pretty, but I'm glad I went into Eurorack even though I'm spending more on that stuff. I already had a couple of semi modulars (Neutron, 0 Coast) so it was inevitable anyway. But I can run my rack FX as either sends or master effects and there's lots of stereo options in modular now.

  • @precarious333music
    @precarious333music 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great idea with original features but glaring lack of useful standard features like send/return processing, degraded repeats for dub effects, tape pitch FX, reverse, modulation of delay times, etc. That makes it a pretty specialized piece of gear for looping. For the price it really should do everything you could possibly want a delay/looper to do. Magneto still looks like the way to go for my rig.

    Excellent review as usual sir. Would you be willing to comment on how you like the sound/playability combo compared to the Zen delay? Also - you personally sold 17 more of these. I was on the Enjoy Lab site the day before you posted this and there were 20 left. Now only 3. Good work! I had already ordered one a few days ago so your timing couldn't be more perfect - and I was nervous because I would be super bummed if you had given it a negative review as I trust your opinion so much! It looks very nice.. And it sounds super fantastic...For live performance you look good touching machines like this... and it looks fun... But I can not afford 600... Which delay would be the software version of that?..Soundtoys Echoboy?... .What advantage has a box like this compared to a vst software?.. I wonder if i can do all these effects with a vst or with an Ipad app.---.. Much easier no?... Always connected, no cables, and you close the computer and it goes with you everywhere !!!. No cleaning, no maintenace, no dust, no repairs, easy updates, and so on...If I had a bunch of money i would buy this toy.. It looks and sounds amazing. Now with that money I go for the new Roland 707. If it would cost 65 € then I would probably buy it as a toy to play.

    @loopop - great vid as ever, one idea, can you record the output in 4 channels in your DAW and then use ambisonix to convert it to binaraul and upload to youtube, that way we can just use headphones and hear the quad panning for ourselves? I think the IEM ones are free. You can convert Quadraphonix -> ABX -> Binaural Stereo...

      @loopop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I've not yet found a process to do this quickly and easily - do you know of a tutorial that shows how? If not I'll have to research and make one at some point.... If yes, happy to upload it, I still have the raw audio in four channels

    • @blackhawkbravo1362
      @blackhawkbravo1362 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@loopop plugins.iem.at/docs/tutorial_basicrouting/ explains how to do it with Reaper and the IEM plugins (which are free). You will need to pan your 4 Quad tracks to their respective location within the Ambisonics sphere. I am working on some live mixing software which will support surround sound mixing, as I think there is a gap in the market (unless you have an insane amount of money for some very specialist kit), but it doesn't work yet!

      Quite right. I have Mimeophone and Rainmaker. The former is very easy to use but it’s quirky and unpredictable like most Make Noise modules. Rainmaker is so very much more powerful and accurate, but it can be overwhelming. You can pictch shift every tap in addition to all repeats. Both need volume controls though. I like both but may sell my Mimeophone down the road because panel space is so valuable.

      hi there. the Echosystem is a valid alternative, as both are pretty unique delays in terms of control over the structure of repeats. but still pretty different beasts. just go study the demos, and think them over in terms of which one fits your music better, not your synths per se. note how the Reminder asks to be hand-played while the Empress allows for that, but less so, while being more interesting left by itself like a normal delay (due to abundance of algos/engines). the Empress is pretty unique in its dual serial mode too

    I really like the main idea of this thing but what I found a bit shocking, particularly for a device that will set you back $650, was the clearly audible stepping of the filter frequency. Especially at the very bottom where you go from an open filter to a mostly closed one, in 4 quick steps. Really unfortunate they skimped on something as essential to the sound as the filter, that's a deal breaker for me.

      I saw one band playing quad show back in the day where quadrophonic were thought to be the next big thing. It was ok but not Earth shattering experience. We have now 7.1 surround which left the quads in the dust. Even well recorded music played over top notch set of home stereo speakers with a subwoofer will give you stunning space layers where you can hear instruments one behind each other (not just left to right, thus it gives you 3D experience.
      I definitely will skip this one, I now need to spend pretty penny on my analog outboard gear setup before it goes to my console, so I was just being curious here. The less digital I go, the better I feel.

    Would be great to have a 'send to MIDI' type option so you could capture the delay lines as a MIDI sequence in your DAW

    I would build an entire performance space around this based on it's quadraphonic delay alone.

    Thanks once again @loopop awesome review!!! At first I thought this was a machine to kill my interest in pulling the trigger on a Zen Delay. Your wonderful review just confirmed my selection. As sweet as the controls are, it just misses the mark on so many levels :( I do adore the Zen filter and to my ears this isn't a patch on it for sound. The fact that the loops don't, well, loop properly kinda sucks. Minor I guess, but with a little practice I'm confident the Zen can produce top rhythmical effects too, not to the same extent, granted. The outs are disappointing too. Could have been so much. The Zen gets my $$$ thanks :)

    • @yurijogurtsov8710
      @yurijogurtsov8710 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      incomparable devices really. though there's nothing like the Reminder (yet), the Zen is probably as far from it as possible, so your comparison is sorta misleading. the Rainmaker mentioned below is a more relevant alternative, for instance.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Technically since this is digital, anything can be achieved in software. The main delay is standard in most software delays. The working modes and DPD are pretty unique - I've not seen anything like it but I'm sure someone will come along over time and prove me wrong ;)

    • @scalebrain643
      @scalebrain643 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different - the Reminder is a quick/intuitive effect bank, where the Zoia can be as intuitive/unintuitive as you want based on your own skill to build patches. If building your own patches with the Zoia is unappealing, than it’s a useless purchase imo because that’s where it’s best power lies - it’s modular architecture. If you just want a good bank of effects with intuitive controls - get the Reminder. The Zoia however should allow you to create more interesting effects if you are clever enough with patch building.

    While designed beautifully, the unit has too many cons for me personally. It seems like a guitar pedal without the functionality of being a pedal, a Eurorack or 5U module without the functionality of being a module, and a looper without the functionality of being a looper.
