    I remember some months ago, our minister said that on of the key criteria for ICA to grant PR and Citizenships, is based on the individual heritage to Singapore. I hope they don’t backdown on their words now.

    You may not remember but in 2011, SG was in the same WC qualifying group as China. The match was held at JBS. Despite an impractical and meaningless restriction on the bulk of home tickets to be sold to Singaporeans, the crowd was definitely larger in number for CN fans (speaking from memory as a spectator in the crowd). Expect the same for all our upcoming home matches. More TH, KOR, and CN fans than SG fans (just the general apathy for the NT). Oh, maybe some Singaporeans (not SG fans mind you) will turn up if Son HM appears.
    I'll stick to supporting my local football team (BK!) and the local league. You can't grow support of your NT without support of local football in the first place.

    • @hiroyukishinichi9873
      @hiroyukishinichi9873 ปีที่แล้ว

      The level of interest in our NT will stay like this UNTIL some results can be shown. Don't need to lament the reality. For the NT, just focused on getting more glory, only then Singaporeans will give a damn. If it is THE match at home ground to qualify us into the World Cup finals, Singaporeans will flock there. Money is peanuts to us. SHOW us the results first, hence why just hunker down, bring in the talents and work hard, become better and the rest will come. Simple

    Hi guys, love your show, a fan from Malaysia. About Perry Ng, well let's put it this way. As long as football doesn't serve Singapore's government interest, nothing is going to change. If they truly care and understand football, Ben Davis would still be playing for the Lions. So I don't think, your government is going to make drastic changes with regards to obtaining citizenship or the mandatory NS, just so players from abroad can represent Singapore at an international level. Just my two cents worth.

    • @lastlightsnet

      Totally agree with you saying, "As long as football doesn't serve Singapore's government interest, nothing is going to change.". If SG government truly cares, changes in laws and regulations can happen in a heartbeat and Perry Ng will be playing for SG on 16 Nov.

    Singapore NT Coach - Nishigaya. I heard that there are already plans for replacement even before the first WC-Q match on 16 Nov 2023. But having that so late now before our first game will not be a good move for the NT and may unnecessarily put pressure on the incoming coach. The matches in November 2023, if he still stays as the NT coach - will probably be the lifeline for him to safe-guard his job; as fans, in a recent match have demonstrated their disagreement with his appointment. And I feel for this guy and feel he is getting the stick for errors and negatives that are of no fault of his. If dropped, I hope he is given an opportunity in a local club - an opportunity to prove his mettle. 😀😀😀

    I have always believed that if he or she is willing to give up origin passport and become a Singaporean, to work hard and commit to playing for the National jersey, I am always for it:
    Song Uiyong has done it, good enough for me.
    Kyoga Nakamura likes SG and wants to play for SG, good enough for me.
    Now Perry wants to play for SG, let’s gooooooooooo

    • @wenlong82
      @wenlong82 ปีที่แล้ว

      for the cases of Song and Kyoga, they rely on the FIFA residency requirement (minimum 5 years with no gaps in between) as the start to apply for PR and then SC if I get the narrative correct instead of relying on the dead horse of FTS.
      pretty much Song's attempt to get SC was by and large his own merit with FAS's support coming only in the latter stages?
      As for Kyoga, any idea if he's met the 5-yr requirement already?
      Also don't want an instance that just because some chest thumping or fist bumping player yell out loud that "I Want to Be Singaporean" and we just cheapskate give it to him without much consideration.
      If not the the age old shadows of Ben Davis (Singapore/Thai/England) and Harry Birtwistle (qualifies for SC as mother is Singaporean) will remain there.
      It will be damn ironic if the Thais name Ben Davis in the team that will be flying down to face Singapore on 21 Nov (don't think that will ever happen since technically he's wanted for his AWOL offences).

    Always loving your commentary on football guys.
    Regarding Perry Ng, I agree that we need him to boost the national team. However let’s be realistic here, he wants international caps. He would definitely choose to represent England over SG if he had that opportunity.
    Song Ui-young is similar in the sense that he wouldn’t have converted to SG citizenship if he was able to represent the Korea.
    The difference between Perry and Song is that Song played in the local league for a bit over a decade if I’m not mistaken. Who in your opinion is more ‘suitable’ for the SG national team?
    While we need all the help we can get for both the national team and SPL, surly there is a point where we need to realise that a footballer is only doing it because they cannot do any better - I do sincerely apologise as this comment sounds harsh which is not the intent, I am just seeking to bring discussion on the topic. Whatever your opinions on Perry Ng's inclusion are, I don't think the national service matter should come into play.
    MINDEF's argument for 2nd generation permanent residents to have to serve NS is that they have "enjoy(ed) the socio-economic national benefits of schooling and living in "peacetime" Singapore".
    Perry Ng has barely spent any time in Singapore, and hasn't enjoyed said "benefits"...

  • @wenlong82
    @wenlong82 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Inclusion of Perry Ng / Luke O Nien won't just suddenly make Singapore the Italy of SEA from its current status as Asean's San Marino overnight to be honest
    If it's a switch of nationality due to direct heritage reasons ie Father / Mother is Singaporean, the situation of Daniel Au Yeong (having Singaporean father ie Au Yeong Pak Kuan) has stronger justification provided his three U-19 caps with Austria are not going to cause any hindrance (ie if it's friendly matches-related caps, still can swop nationality?)
    for the instances of PN and LON, FAS is trying to woo them to don the Asean San Marino colours by virtue of indirect heritage ties (their grandparent/great grand uncle having Singapore citizenships), justification probably would come in at 2nd level vis-a-vis those who meet the FIFA residency requirement of minimum 5 years and with no blood ties to Singapore (looks level 3 to me and have the looks of Ben Davis written all over)
    vs those that on paper qualify via direct heritage i.e either father or mother is Singapore citizen

    While it would be great for championship level players to represent Singapore, I imagine the inflexibility of SG's policy on dual nationality may be a sticking point. If Perry Ng wants to give up his British citizenship to play for SG, then sign him up! But I suspect he may be reluctant to do so. Is it time for ICA to consider allowing dual nationality for people with specific, strong claims? E.g. children with 1 Singaporean parent and 1 foreign parent, in addition to these sports players with more distant Singaporean heritage. It would be unfair to these people who genuinely have close family in 2 countries if an exception is made just for a footballer. And who knows, allowing wider dual nationality may lead to more Perry Ngs and Luke O'Niens developing in overseas leagues in future while qualifying to play for SG.

  • @soccerdadsg
    @soccerdadsg ปีที่แล้ว

    The issue is duel citizenship. I think it is unlike Perry will give up his British passport because it will be inconvenient for him to live in Britain. FAS may be asking the government to grant him an exception. I think it is difficult.

Perry actually is willing to give up the British passport, he knows about Singapore's stance on dual citizenship and he still wants to play for SG. He is working with FAS now to see how to have SG passport yet minimise any work issues in GB, and of course, whether can convert and then qualify to play for SG

      Think there's some relaxation regarding the work permit requirements in English football to allow clubs to sign them (think it's capped at 4 according to the news). Having said that, it makes sense for one (be it PN, or Maradona Lim or Pele Chong) to go through the process to get the citizenship rather than having it easy to get it from the sky
      Some form of classification eg
      level 1 ie for those with direct heritage ties via father or mother's SC status, say a 3 year journey to get fast tracked citizenship
      level 2 ie for the likes of LON, Sony Something etc with indirect heritage ties ie their great great grand mother/father, 5 year journey to the promised land of red passport
      level 3 ie for those with no heritage ties ie meeting the 5 yr minimum period of playing in the said league, having yet to represent his country of origin in official FIFA-sanctioned competition (friendlies excluded) etc, to go via the normal citizenship path
      speaking of which, there's the Kyoga fella who wanted to rep Singapore? so far the only drums about him is him express open desire to wear Red but any news abt him applying for PR etc to even reach the red passport promise land?

      When asked about his desire to play for the Lions, he said: "Yes, I would love to one day represent the Singapore national team if I can get Singapore citizenship. However, this is dependent on the head coach at the time and it will be up to my ability to earn this spot."

      KN has played in S-Liga since 2019.
      If just using the FIFA 5-year period (ie continuous with no loan spell out with other overseas teams), he would tick the 1st condition by around next year.
      then the other pieces of the puzzle ie whether he meets the other stakeholders' requirement (eg ICA), any support from the relevant NSA in this FAS etc
      and if there's any issues for this allegiance switch given that he had represented Japan in the FIFA junior tournaments etc, last thing Asean San Marino need to mess things up is to field a player that can't switch nationality and gets match forfeiture/points deduction etc
      in event of successful switch, we also don't want the converted players to take it easy with the SC passport and decide to renounce SC to go back to their former land.
      Mirko Grabovac and Egmar Goncalves come to mind as 2 of the jokers that took up SC under the FTS...and eventually renounce SC to go bck to their former countries after retirement from playing.

    Initially, I was two minds about the potential SG representation for Perry Ng. As much as I encourage the notion, I did not want Perry to lose the opportunity of being a professional player in the UK just because of our own football doldrums. However, our Deepanraj graciously pointed out to me about the ease of restrictions with the English FA and that he might be able to continue to ply his trade in the UK, even though SG is not top 100 FIFA ranking.
    I will support this notion if that is the case (might not be the same for the other leagues/countries - in terms of player contract) as at the very least we eliminate the element of ‘Hit & Miss’. Perry has already proven his abilities on the field, and the fact that he also desires to represent SG makes it even more compelling, I do not see why we cannot pave this route for him and possibly others too. It is no different to the foreign players that we have given citizenship after five years, and perhaps it could be argued that this is a fast-track move (heritage line).
    Perhaps Daniel Au Yeong could also follow this route. I hope that the under-21 representation for Austria will not affect the SG representation at senior level, If I am not wrong Ryan Giggs played for England at youth level before switching to Wales. However, I have reservations about this, particularly considering Daniel’s potential senior-level representation for Austria. If that's on the horizon for him, it would be a significant ask to expect him to forego such an opportunity.
    And for those who argue about the NS element, yes, I feel you as a Singaporean too. It is a sacrifice that we all had to take for our country and feel the pride of our service to our country. But times are changing and what defines as a Singaporean no longer requires key elements like NS, or whether you have KK Hospital as your address of birth in your Birth Certificate. If we can accept to have a MP (Senior Minister) to be an elected representative without having to serve NS, I do not see why we insist that criteria for representation for our country with football.
    We should support Perry in this endeavor, allowing him to embrace international football. 😀😀😀
