@@bobcorbin3294 Bowie grabbed him because he was probably the only one who could play Robert Fripps guitar parts live.
I saw him years ago with his band the Bears at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly, they were great. After the show, after most had left, he sat on the edge of the small stage and talked about music, etc for an hour, to about 10 of us. Such a cool concert and a giving and talented musician.

that SG was one he bought for $500 from a guy backstage. the 'Baby snakes' guitar. he had one other which was the 'Roxy guitar'. Think that's the one Dweezle has now. You can get a miniature replica of the SG in this video from Axe Heaven. I've got one

Mad killer guitar skills especially from this particular band. That modified SG always had such a beautiful tone. Bozzio is a world
class drummer and a perfect match with Frank. Currently he tours with a humongous drum set, playing his own compositions on solo drums.

Frank’s Halloween shows were legendary. Terry Bozzio is my favorite of all the Zappa drummers. Wait till you see him play “The Black Page Drum Solo,” which Zappa wrote specifically as a challenge for him. Also, the singer was the great Adrian Belew. After he was with Zappa in ‘77, he did stints as a guitarist for David Bowie and Talking Heads (Remain in Light tour) before joining King Crimson and doing his own solo material. Storied careers for both.

Back in the days, in music magazines Frank was sometimes critisized that he played a solo over 1 chord. Frank reacted something like I don't give a shit about that. I like to solo over 1 chord. I play what I like to hear and that's what they have to deal with.If they don't like it, don't listen to it.

  • @chazblitz
    @chazblitz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yep, it's Adrian Belew alright. He actually can sing real pretty when he wants to. See King Crimson Heatbeat. The drummer is Terry Bozzio who was the voice of the devil in Titties and Beer. Him and bassist Patrick O'Hearn formed synthpop band Missing Persons in the early 80's after their tour of duty with Frank. The singer was Bozzio's wife and Hustler magazine centerfold, Dale Bozzio who was the person lady gaga stole her act from. She also performed with Frank on Joe's Garage. Terry now plays a kit called the SS BOZZIO because it's the size of a freakin ship.

I saw a different Zappa spin-off group one time in San Francisco - before Missing Persons there was the jazz fusion "Group 87" (Patrick O'Hearn with trumpet player Mark Isham and guitarist Peter Maunu.) The opening act was Henry Kaiser lll, making some amazing noises on his home built instruments. Group 87's Moms were at the table next to me - they were certainly not enjoying that part of the show...

That particular SG, although it says Gibson on the headstock, was actually hand built by a fan who brought it to a show for Frank to check out and he bought off the guy. It has the star inlay as well as some infinity symbol inlays. Frank also had the electronics modified, as he did with pretty much every piece of gear he owned.

    • @mrtyreus0
      @mrtyreus0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Electronics modified, yes! From what I recall it was modified to be active then went through a series of studio effects then straight to house. No guitar amp necessary. Incredibly ahead of the time. Things people are only starting to do pretty recently. Also looks like an early wireless system on his strap.

Are we perfectly sure that Zappa was really a human being? Was he even sure himself? Zappa seemed to be in a league of his own, indeed in a world of his own, maybe he or one or both of his parents were from a different world?

Adrian Belew on vocals/guitar. It is noted in other comments this was just a few years before he joined King Crimson. As if playing with these two giants of rock/prog-rock history weren't enough he also played with David Bowie. And the Talking Heads. And Laurie Anderson. He even cut a song or two with Paul Simon.
He's a helluva performer. Saw him with King Crimson in late '81/early '82 for the "Beat" album tour. Saw him with Zappa about '78. He had a hard-hat on with a spinning red light on top like an ambulance light or something.
Belew did some great solo work too.
    Blessings.

Nice pic-up, nice react... Terry (monster-machine) Bozzio is my favourite drummer in Zappa's "constellation's"... when FZ played guitar solos right in front of me I always had to be careful not forget to breath! ...stunning!... breathtaking!....extatic!...extraordinary moments!...I remember an open-air show in Germany in summer'81, hot weather, nice concert area with a little river passing through and around 30000 people (Zappa enthusiasts)... the people in the first 5 rows just before the stage totally freaked out! ...people cried and shout out loud during 'torture never stops"...they throw their shirts, bikinis, underwear ect through the stage... FZ was inspired by so many naked or topless boys and girls in front of him that he got into an acting-mood a bit like in the NY shows... awesome! ... I found him in different ways playing a concert... really active - or later on more introvert in some indoor shows round Germany and the Netherlands... I liked both styles very much... thank you for this nice video and your nice react...🙏

Yes, that was a VERY young Adrian Belew singing, and yes, he is quite a good vocalist. He’s played with plenty of other artists including Talking Heads, King Crimson and David Bowie, not to mention having a solo career of his own.
As for drummer Terry Bozzio, what can I say…the guy’s a force of nature. He’s another musician with an impressive resume, including stints with UK and Missing Persons.
Fun fact: during an interview with bassist Patrick O’Hearn, he had an interesting comment about Bozzio.
He said that when Terry first joined the band, he was pretty straight laced. His preferred stage attire in the beginning was a suit with a (probably skinny) tie. By the end of his tour of duty in the travelling circus that was Zappa’s touring band, his onstage wardrobe had been reduced to a red leather jockstrap, which is probably what he was wearing in this video.

Frank's concerts would typically have sections with 6-10 dense songs played back-to-back without any pause between. A breathtaking amount of complex music. There'd be tightly-inserted sub-sections improvised and conducted. Each concert was a composition of its own. It was a real treat when he'd stop and talk to the audience. Let me recommend a bootleg of Packard Goose/Black Napkins, also performed live in NY. Poor sound quality, but well worth it for the great audience interaction. "20 years of Frank Zappa: Album 7"

My daughter is a dancer. She loves Terry Bozzio. After seeing this concert (DVD) he became her fav drummer. She was on a ship a couple of years ago dancing and she and a couple of her friends called themselves the blonde bimbos for a joke. She met some guys playing in a trio (jazz) on the ship and she asked the drummer if he liked Terry Bozzio. He and the others nearly fell off their chairs. They’d never come across any “blonde bimbo” ask them about Bozzio and then claim that Whats New in Baltimore was her fav Frank ditty, let alone know of Frank’s music. She’s in the Bahamas right now…another cruise gig. Bozzio is my fav too. Frank said he had a tendency to frenzy out. I love that tendency. That rhythm section is one of the best to ever step foot on a stage. Patrick O’Hearn and Bozzio were good friends. Patrick played upright bass on The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution the first time he met Frank. He had the thing in the car and Frank asked him to come in and jam. Something like that. Probably got the details wrong. But that rhythm section is as good as any I’ve heard…as good as Sam Jones/Louis Hayes, Paul Chambers/Philly Joe, Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison, Tony Williams/Ron Carter, Jaco/Erskine/Acura, Jamaaladeen Tacuma/Calvin Weston, Charlie Halen/Billy Higgins, Marco Minnemann/ Bryan Beller etc….

Happy to see that others commented identified Adrian Belew and Terry Bozzio. The bassist was Patrick O’Hearn. Patrick and Terry were in Missing Persons as well as Terry’s wife Dale who sang along with Warren Cuccurullo on guitar. They all played with Frank. Frank “discovered” Belew somewhere in Ohio and brought him onboard before he was poached by David Bowie. Then onto the Talking Heads where he, David Byrne and Brian Eno did Remain in Light. Belew was also in the monster lineup of King Crimson which also included Bill Brufford on drums and Tony Levin on bass and Chapman stick. Of course Robert Fripp was there. If you can find that band doing Elephant Talk on ABC’s Fridays, check it out to see that band that did a great trilogy of albums: Discipline, Beat and Three if a Perfect Pair. When that band toured with those albums they were the best on the planet - hands down.

  • @marcribe6483
    @marcribe6483 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The drummer is Terry Bozzio. He began with Frank in late 1975 when Frank toured with Captain Beefheart; and stayed until 1978. He took over the drums in Frank's band when Chester Thompson left and was substituted in 1978 by Vinnie Colaiuta, who arguably became Frank's most praised drummer. Vinnie left in 1980 so Frank recruited David Logeman for that years tour only. In 1981 arrived Chad Wackerman who never left Frank's band since. Frank toured every year till 1984. Then dedicated himself to learning to play the synclavier for four years. He returned to touring in 1988, however after a successful European tour and halfway through the American leg, arguments among band members made Frank give up touring for good, canceling the remainder of dates. I think it was just before 1990, news started circulating that Frank was diagnosed with something. He past away in Dec. 4, 1993.

Adrian Belew was with King Crimson for quite awhile. Franks SG was not an actual Gibson SG. He bought it from a fan for $500 and then customized the electronics to his own liking. Famously known as the Baby Snakes guitar, he used that right up until he switched to his custom sunburst Les Paul. Terry Bozzio was maybe 21 at the time of this show, and today is considered one of the top drummers in the world. And and well deserved status. I started going to Zappa concerts the following year, 1978 and the sound quality and performances he produced, were comparable to any high tech, concert put on today.

Adrian part 2 and some other stuff... Adrian would leave the stage during certain guitar solo's by Frank, because he wasn't needed, sometime yes, sometimes no, but during the no times... he would go get a coke.
In Kohln Germany Zappa played a concert and Brian Eno attended... after the show Brian called David Bowie and told him that the guitarist in Zappa's band was amazing with an amazing voice, and David just had to see him.
The next night, Zappa played in Berlin, and during the solo of Pound For a Brown... Adrian went to get a coca cola. David Bowie was waiting for him at the bar backstage..
While Frank Zappa played what would ultimately be recorded as "The Sheik Yerbouti Tango" on the album Sheik Yerbouti, David Bowie was stealing his guitarist.
David asked Adrian to meet him in a small unknown bar after the show on the other side of Berlin to talk about entering his band in a place where Frank wouldn't be.
So they go to this little "unknown" bar on the COMPLETE other side of town... and when they enter to get a table... yep... you guessed it...lol... there's Frank... sitting right by the door.
David said something to Frank like "good show... Adrian is quite a guitarist."
Frank said "Fuck you captain Tom.
Adrian thought "Christ...Frank's known him 5 seconds and he's already demoted him from Major to capitain."
David says something like "aw... come on Frank be a good sport."
    lol
    Frank repeats "Fuck you, captiainTom."
And that's all Frank ever said to David Bowie.
When David and Adrian went to sit down... David said to Adrian with a smile... "Well... that went well, didn't it?"
Now... Terry Bozzio... you should see his new drum set
here it is in time lapse... get ready to shit your pants.

@Chris Boulet - Adrian Belew: "The next night we performed in Berlin," he says, "there was a part of the show where Frank took an extended guitar solo and most of the band members, including myself, left the stage for a few minutes. As I walked to the back of the stage, I looked over at the monitor mixing board and saw David Bowie and Iggy Pop standing there."
After collecting himself, Belew says he told Bowie how much he loved his work, to which Bowie said, "Great, how would you like to be in my band?" Belew noted that he already had a job, with the guy currently soloing on stage.
"David laughed and said, 'Yes, I know, but when Frank's tour ends my tour starts two weeks later. Shall we talk about it over dinner?'" Belew remembers.
They took great pains to disguise the negotiations, meeting in a waiting limo outside Belew's hotel. ("It was like something out of a spy film," he says.) Bowie then announced he was taking the guitarist to one of his favorite restaurants in Berlin. Problem: Zappa and the rest of the band were somehow at the same place. "How many restaurants are there in Berlin?" Belew asks, rhetorically. "25,000?"

@@Frunobulax74 yep... heard Adrian tell the story in an interview... in fact that is how I dedected that the solo is the one from Sheikyerbouti Tango... it was recorded on that night and it is one ofg the only solo's where you can't hear Adrian on rythym guitar dyuring the bootleg of the entire concert.

and ONE LAST THING... the guy playing piano... the guy with long blond hair... his name is Peter Wolf... after he left Zappa he wrote two very big hit songs for Jefferson Starship and produced the whole album... but he wrote "We built this city on rock and roll" and he wrote "Sarah" little fun fact.

If it reminded you of the Muffin Man video, it should since it was the same band, same set of shows... and you were so wrapped up by the music that you didn't comment on the killer line...tiny is as tiny do! He's talking to his audience (and in those days you could smell the pot in the air at concerts, before they banned any kind of smoking). Only Frank could dis his audience and get cheered for it. Funny thing about this song, it is the song he played more times than any other in concert. I saw him quite a few times and this was the song that always seemed to be in the set list. And every one had a killer jam, so when you think about it, there are hundreds of live solos (which he always recorded) just from this song alone...incredible. Glad you enjoyed!

Watch Frank calling for narrow feedback from the audience when he was soloing...He is looking for a response from an audience member to draw inspiration showing he understood broadcast and reception and narrow casting and reception....Terri Bozzio..drummer...basically designed the double pedal most use today with the DW company...they use to have two pedals then a small universal joint was added so one kick drum could be double kicked...

Yes and no. Other musicians knew you could play your ass off, but also might doubt whether you could be tasteful and unobtrusive in the way they wanted - since FZ asked for that far less than most, and usually had no problem with cross-rhythms or jazz chords and licks.

My favorite Zappa lineup. Bozzio, O'Hearn, Belew, Mars... Not just virtuosos but musical characters as well. Frank discovered Adrian Belew, but David Bowie stole him after seeing a show in Berlin. Bowie arranged a clandestine dinner at his favorite restaurant in Berlin to negotiate the deal. Coincidentally Frank and the band were at the same restaurant. "David, trying to be cordial, motioned to me and said, 'Quite a guitar player you have here Frank,'" Belew remembers. "And Frank said, 'F- you, Captain Tom.'" (Belew notes that the angered Zappa had "demoted David from Major Tom to Captain Tom.") Bowie tried again to make small talk, but was met once more with the same reply from Zappa: "F- you, Captain Tom."

    True story:
Adrian Belew (vocals and guitar) started touring with David Bowie (who was famous for hes alter ago Major Tom) after this tour. Zappa was sour. He felt like he had stolen Belew. Bowie wanted to make peace and walked towards Zappas limo. He rolled down the window and said "Fuck you corporal Tom". He degraded him :D
Belew has also toured with Talkng Heads. Everyone wanted Belew at that time. Then he joined Fripp with King Crimson and the rest is history.

When the guitar solo(s) began, I thought some of the sonic mayhem may have been him, maybe some was, but Frank quickly took firm "control" of that. Another monster display, as you say...'Monsters of Rock'. Loved when he, Belew and the keyboards were all freaking out at once over that gargantuan groove. F me sideways. 8>o
