Elise being human was just to act as a relatable character we, the viewers, could connect with easier in the same way as with Chris Thorndyke, and her entire story arch was around the idea of learning to embrace her emotions and live a little, something she was very grateful for Sonic showing her on this adventure. She's also like, 17 and Sonic is 15/16 at this point and clearly didn't reciprocate the same level of emotion, which really, when you think about it, Elise probably went through a fleeting crush before rationalizing that her perceived attraction to him was just that he whisked her away from danger in the middle of what was probably a pretty boring week before Eggman showed up, and she was getting to do something other than act as a figurehead for a festival that celebrated the being that her dad was killed by while trying to clone it to harness time itself so she'd get her mom back, which left her as an orphan at age 7. Really, I don't think we actually see thier lips make contact, because of the beam of light. Wouldn't that be crazy if it turned out that she just pecked him on the cheek just like any other person might do for a good friend? 😅 Like, she just leans in and kisses him. There's no extended make out or anything, and he doesn't return the gesture when revived, and just catches her in a hug when she loses her footing for a moment in relief of seeing that the ritual worked ((Also, channeling chaos emerald energy might have drained her a bit, I dunno, I'm just guessing)) The problem, I think, isn't that Elise kissed him. I think the problem people actually had was that it wasn't either Amy or Shadow ((depending on what ship you're into)), since Amy and Shadow both are equally affected by realizing that Sonic was laying dead in front of them and Sonamy and Sonadow were really popular ships back in the day. To the point that people were willing to wage war over the comment sections of DeviantArt over which was "canon" or why the other characters deserved to die for getting in the way. Crazy stuff back then. That said, I personally didn't have a problem with Elise. She's a video game character in a video game series about talking magic animals that coexist with humanity and fight sentient robots. A neglected teenage girl getting attached to the one being that's treated her as a person instead of a figurehead or collateral damage is really not the end of the world. They're just friends at the end of the game. Elise being voiced by Lacey Chabert was a nice concept, considering she was a pretty big Sonic fan as a kid, so her getting to lend her voice to a character being taken on an adventure with Sonic must have been fun for her. Also, funny because she voiced Eliza Thornberry in "The Wild Thornberries" who was a red haired girl who could talk to animals, so I wonder if that casting choice was partly intentional or not... Point is, the whole Elise and Sonic kiss thing was probably meant to be a spin on the "awakened with a kiss by royalty" thing that's a popular thing to reference from fairy tales and Sonic has been known to take popular concepts and put a spin on them. He's a hero rescuing the princess from danger ((interestingly, several of Eggman's boss battles here are based around mythological beasts, like Egg Cerberus and Egg Wyvern)), but HE'S being saved by the princess in the end... pretty interesting idea, I think. 👀

Fun fact: Shadow's skin is probably not damaged by the sun and thus a skincare routine is probably not necessary, rather it's gravity that will be doing most of the damage.
