Very strange at me finding this video. Back in the late 80's and early 90's I began fishing the Pop R fast because with my mentality it's hard for me to slow down. I had my dad with me and was fishing it fast and he told me I was fishing it too fast. I didn't catch a 5 pounder with it that day to change his mind but I did catch a 3 pounder. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I am so happy you have started a You Tube channel. I would like to say thank you for helping me catch many bass over the decades. Two things you said really stick out for me. First, back in the early '90's, you said that if you didn't have blisters on your hands at end of the day of jerkbait fishing, you weren't fishing it correctly. Second, always duplicate a cast that caught a fish. I'm looking forward to you sharing more words of wisdom!!
My favorite top water bait to throw and catch bass on! I will say the Rico's will out fish the Pop-R most days. Several times in club tournaments I caught more or all the bass on the Rico when partner was throwing the Pop-R.
Great video,one of my favorite that anyone has made,my first tournament was 74,southern California,I had a partner,so we always teamed,we had a 17' skeeter with a 115 rude and a bigtime flasher,that boat was only 6' wide and scary,we had 38 lb trolling motor,we were on Otay lake,very green at any tournament,there were no specific rules for boats,it was sponsored by stren,I don't think they even had electricity,the scale was one like in the vegetable department,we won with 10 lbs,got a check for a 100.00,and a bunch of mono line,hats ,my main lures were the rapala silver and black,gold and black,lucky 13,I couldn't throw with the ambassadeur,so I used a mitchell 300 with two spools,7' yellow eagle claw trout rod,things were so different,good nostalgia,Thanks

I am still fishing with the old Pop "R lures that I had from fishing team events in the late 1980's and 1990's ! Won a few tournaments using them too ! Clear, chrome/black, bone, frog pattern.
Thanks Rick for the great video. Fished the original Rebel popper, now Pop R, in the 70's. We used a 7 foot fiberglass rod with 8 lb test mono on a spinning rod. Held the rod high to provide lift to make to bait spit rather than chug. It would spit and walk like a spook. At the end of the day you were worn out, but caught a lot of bass this way. The light line was necessary to get distance because of the clear water we had here in our central Kentucky reservoirs.
You've been the guru of bass fishing for me and many others throughout the decades. SO GREAT to see you coming out with videos, you have so much to share. Thanks again, Rick!

Rick, I’ve been a big fan of yours for years. My favorite memory of you was when you were doing a fishing show. You had hooked a really nice bass and after landing it, you were showing the camera the fish when it flipped out of your hands. You jumped into the lake after the fish. You didn’t come me up with the fish but I was forever a fan.
Yes, two legends (Rick Clunn and Al Lindner) were fishing together on a Florida Lake. It's in Glen Lau's 1982 film, "Feeding Habits of Bass", but might have been seen in an older TV show. Great entertainment and bass fishing tips!

Thanks for the info Rick. I fished a hula popper fast like that back in the 60s and caught many bass with that fast technique. Everyone in the boat thought I was making too much noise with the lure until I started putting bass in the boat. Then everyone wanted to know if I had another one in my box Lol😆
Amazing. When Choke Canyon first opened we used to slay em on the Pop R fishing it just like you noted. We didn’t know what we were doing different. We just too young then and too impatient to fish it any slower! Really enjoyed this video.

I fished with Rick Clunn in that 83 US Open on Lake Mead on day 3 of the tournament. This guy is definitely the "Texas fishin machine. I didn't do much fishing that day BUT I learned more in that day than any day in any boat. If I remember correctly, Mr. Clunn vaulted from 17th. to 3rd place on that day and won the US Open in that year. Jimmy Houston presented Rick Clunn the trophy and the money in a clear box and the key to that box was around a tigers neck. FUN TIMES AWESOME EXPERIENCE.
Very cool video. I do not remember if it was Bass magazine or another publication but someone wrote an article about sanding the Pop R’s lower lip after Zell had told the world. If I am incorrect on an article I apologize for that. Zell came to a club meeting around 1990 and presented how he tuned the Pop R and how he worked it. Along 10:11 with other baits and how to fish them. Mr Clunn these stories are educational and entertaining. Thank you!

I have an original Rico that I had custom painted, and I’ve caught several nice 4+lb bass. I’m more excited now knowing your history and I just subbed to your channel and I have several of your LC’s along with a few of WEC Ed Chambers handmade balsa baits. My brother and I grew up fishing Kentucky lake with our Dad in the late 50’s early 60’s with Heddon Lucky 13’s and have saved Dad’s lures in a shadow box frame. Thanks for sharing so much, and I hope you have forgiven Zel by now 🙏😜
Rick, my freind Ken Anthony who fished with you several times in several B.A.S.S tournaments turned me onto one of your favorites which was a bone colored pop-r in qaurter ounce. Anyway once Ken turned me onto your pattern I won several tournamnts on it. I did finally realize you had to change the hooks that came on them because theybwere those chrome plated cheap hooks. Once I chamged them out it was on. That bone colored pop-r is one of the best catching baits I have ever fished. What always suorised me was the 1/4 oumce always produced more fish for me then the bigger one. I also customed tied in rooster festhers in white and added silver tensile to it and it basically super charged the bait. I loved your bone colored Pop-r so much.....well lets just say Rebel could stop making them and Inwould have enough to fish 4 life times. I kind of went overboard and am ashamed to say how many I have to this day....lets just say cases of them!

Strike king spit king was the lure I was using doing the same technique of spitting the lure as you pull it along. I like that rico just never bought one.

Rick, how deep will a popr attract a fish from. For example a local lake has a lot of water that is 3-4 feet and I’m wondering if this might just be what I need to draw some of those stubborn fish up just be pestering them. Thank you.
