  • This is my message to the people of the Philippines. Filipinos have been a great influence on me and my family over the last decade and I wanted to share my caring observations. I have lived alongside you for long enough to notice certain things. Little moments that have made a great impact on me.
In this video I share my perspective on the things that have shaped my relationship with Filipino people from around the world. These last four years have shown me a depth to the people that I have not encountered anywhere else in the world.
I have been trying to find the words to express my message for quite a while. I hope that you will see that my message is pure, and please share it with others if you think they need to hear it.
If you are wondering why my words should matter to you at all, I encourage you to see the positive experiences that we have experienced living in Mindanao. Here is a playlist of some of our daily vlogs : • 🇵🇭 Moving To Philippin...

Thank you for pointing this out. I have been working as a Nurse in the UK and have seen my colleagues being bullied or being exploited to bear difficult patients in successive days.. the workload becomes tiring and then we lost the drive but then my fellow filipinos do not complain and just take it. I wanted them to have the courage to also learn to say "no". To also learn to pause and think of themselves... because we do not deserve less.. The world knows that we are the most caring people that is why we are the world's nurses and so we deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.. thank you for opening this up........

Saw and experienced very poor service myself when we visited the Philippines last year. We treated our relatives, about a dozen, to what we all believed were the two best restaurants in Vigan. One restaurant, we had to flag down and waited so long for water refill, we needed another setting and they brought after everyone else started eating so we had to share utensils, the food took so long and the restaurant was only 25% occupied, they never checked on us once, not even when they served the last dish to see how the dishes were… The other restaurant, someone stood next to our table the entire time, which left us with no privacy. We had to tell management to have move away at a reasonable distance. They doused two dishes with sauces that we asked they be put on the side. One dish was cold, we asked them to warm and by the time it came back we were done eating. Before I left the country, I asked why are things that way- the majority said that is how service is in the philippines but they don’t speak up. They just accept because they think it’s the norm and no one else is complaining. Pretty sad

This hits hard. I'm a 45 year old Filipino and I've seen and experienced it through the years. The message here is what each filipino should understand. True, we are proud of our resilience - but our resilience is also our curse. Hindi po kaartehan ang humhingi ng patas at katumbas na kapalit. The country will start to improve when each Filipino values themselves more than just a "pinoy" that will endure whatever comes their way for the rest of their lives.

Filipinos must show that their resilience is for themselves to withstand the storms of life and not to be taken advantaged of
as people who endure hardship thus be treated or receive less than they deserve. And another is to maintain and upgrade so better quality and standard can be offered by your business. Be resilient at the same time strive for excellence.

Philippines has a high crime rate including gang rape and murder.
Actually in my time in the Philippines a lot of people got killed. Some girls got raped. Many stuff got stolen.
Child abortion with a bottle of Tanduay and so on, I could continue for hours.
A broke security guard ones offered me his work as a Hitman, around 200$ if I give the gun.
I ones witnessed an attempted murder.
A doctor ones threatened my live.

I shed a tear watching this coz i had cried so often for our country. The Philippines is undeniably beautiful and God has blessed us with all.the richness a land can ever hold. But all these have been corrupted by our own local and national leaders to benefit themselves thru out the century. And it makes me angry everytime they utter the word "resilience" coz they have been using this code to make our people accept what they are only willing to offer. These same leaders have refused to elevate the lives of the people so they can have the power to manipulate with even just a small amount of money to relieve them from hunger for an hour. Our govt have been relying so much on NGOs and private individuals to give a better life for our people. I always try to Buy Local to help in my own little way our farmers and fishermen, and local manufacturers. Hope most of us will do the same.❤

Thank you for making this video! As an American born with Filipino parents, I have struggled to communicate this message to them my whole life! My dad often says, "Good enough!" However, I try to teach him there is NO SUCH THING. If you dial a phone number and 1 digit is off then it is simply the wrong number. I'd like to echo you're message and say to all my Filipino people this:
While there is no such thing as perfect, there is also no such thing as "good enough."
In any situation, there is ONLY the best and most appropriate solution.
Tricking yourself to accept a subpar mentality as humbleness will lead to consequences you, your children and your neighbors will have to pay.

I'm a Balikbayan who moved to USA at age 6 and returned for the first time to PH at age 24. Needless to say, I'm more American culturally than Filipino. My parents didn't speak natively around us so we lost most, but not all, the language. I have visited PH off and on many times over the years. Usually for only 2 weeks but 4 times I've stayed longer than a month. Right now at age 52, I've stayed in PH for over 2 years to see if I could live here. Overall, my total time spent here is probably around 5 years.
I'll share with you what I've learned as born Filipino who mostly grew up in USA, know some Filipino culture, very observant, and wishes very much to be proud of PH.
About 95% of PH locals can be summerized with 1 word. Content. From their perspective, western standards will never happen in PH so they won't spend the extra energy to achieve it. They won't even think about it. They're content with just about everything. More interests in vocational learning than abstract higher learning. It's more about getting regular pay than achievements. But no pay is okay for them too. Most will just survive because they live in an extended home with family members who have jobs and don't mind sharing. You may think they are taking advantage of each other but they won't even give it a second thought because to them, it's normal. For Example, I have a 40 something cousin in Cebu who has never worked in his life, weighs about 400 lbs, and just sits on a chair every day. His home and food just given to him as it's normal. Encouragement is taken as an annoying command and no longer wanted.
So you could say they deserve better, but they are content and always will be until the government matures up and become real responsible parents for ALL kids including the homeless. I think the adults are a lost cause, but there is hope in the kids. Teach them not to be like their parents. And yes, I'm talking about the 95%. The 5% priveliged are the ones who need to mature up. In PH, 5% high income, 30% mid income, and 65% low income. And some mid income is because of the extended family dynamic. Separate them, they become poor.

wow that's so honest & generally true! I've read somewhere that this trait/culture has something to do with the weather also ( people adapts). In PH, it would either just rain or shine thus, they don't have seasons to push them to work hard & prepare for winter unlike in the west that you really have to prepare. .. plus the lack of incentive to do better. One ex. is that people are just contented to live in makeshift houses because the weather is easy to survive, in fact too hot generally, etc... just some inputs but I'm sure there are a lot of factors. ..Definitely, awareness & opportunities are not lacking though it's just doubly hard for many ..

This is so well said and so true. Filipinos have the greatest and purest heart of all the people I've met in my life. I'm French living the US.
Filipinos accept that they have to suffer because of their history, geographical situation that makes it challenging to have ressources and maintain a house, let alone natural disasters. But yes, they need to be more proud and trust each other more with respect beyond the words. Starting by fixing the little things as you point out. Helping your neighbor fixing light, water, windows. Making the little things that make life better on a daily basis. Saying " that can wait" and procrastination is the biggest flaw of Filipino people. So 100% agree with you. They should do away with that mentality. They should embrace the "we can do better", "togerher we can make greater things", "I will not settle for mediocrity". And then pride will rise, confidence will rise and so does level lifestyle and quality of life. And they will earn greater respect from people of other nations that tend to abuse they kindness and mentality.

You made me cry. That's so beautiful. I'm an American. I miss the Philippines it's been 9 yrs. It's so hard for Americans to permanently live there. We don't have the resources or income like other expats. Hoping to get back someday but your right about them but I've encountered both the kindness and the evil of it. Friends and friends who we thought were friends stealing from us even though we would have given it to them if they had all but they took advantage of us and lied and used the extra money for drugs. We forgave him but then he sadly passed away. Friends who claimed to be friends then wrote a nasty terrible recommendation for us to go to a missionary school because they never really got to know me and the fact that I deal with ASD . But then I have friends who have never stopped loving me no matter what and have put up with my awkwardness. So your right that take a lot of slack and put up with it when they do deserve more. I love the way you did this video. I how they do too. I'm sure they will. It was genuine and heartfelt. I hope someday I get to experience they're culture and then again. Permanently. I miss my bestie . Gosh until the last few videos I haven't watched you guys in a long time your daughter has grown so much. I last watched when that huge typhoon hit.

Agree with you! I married a Filipina and will be moving there from the US. Here’s what struck me about the Philippines:
    1. Kindness
    2. Welcoming
    3. Apathy
It’s that last one that breaks my heart and makes me so angry for you all. I’ve heard time and time again that you are resilient; from you all. But resilience should NEVER be confused with accepting lower standards for yourselves.
You DESERVE better. Clean water, infrastructure to handle floods, better education, getting homeless children off the streets and into good free education, better pay from local and international companies, free or affordable healthcare (this is one the US shamefully struggles with).
My point, I hate to see how little you see yourselves. You may not say it but through your inaction and apathy you actually show very little love for yourselves and each other.
You were once a shining beacon of hope and strength in Asia. You inspired South Korea to fight against their own dictatorship and poverty, and look at it now. You fought side by side with us the US and endured the Batan march. It may surprise you to know that we honor you all in my small home town of Las Cruces, NM every year. We host long trail walks that last days to honor you all and those you fought alongside.
You are better, I hope you fight for better. Protest, vote, stand up for yourselves. This is true resilience.
Release the apathy and fight peacefully for yourselves, be once again the shining beacon of hope in Asia and the world. Love you all and can’t wait to be there for the rest of my life and I too will proudly stand by your side when you start standing up for yourselves.
You are also my brothers and sisters

Mabuhay! 🇵🇭 I couldn't agree more with your heartfelt love for the Philippines and its people! Your passion resonates deeply with me.
Just like you, I've been woven into the fabric of this remarkable country since 1983. During my 30 years in the US Navy and beyond, I've been blessed to live in the Philippines twice, soaking in its beauty and customs like a thirsty sponge. That's why our TH-cam channel, Ejay's Adventures, dedicates itself to showcasing this magic to the world.
This message goes out to all Pinoys: you've deeply influenced me and my family. Coming and going from your shores has shaped my very being. The depth of your spirits, resilience, and infectious optimism shine brighter than any tropical sunset. My friends even call me a "Reverse Coconut" - white on the outside, but brown on the inside!
For decades, I've cherished the little things that make your culture so special. It's the warmth of a shared meal (think crispy lechon and fluffy pan de sal!), the laughter echoing through jeepneys like joyful anthems, the unwavering support that's always just a tap on the shoulder away, and the pure joy of celebrating life's big and small moments together. These are the threads that weave my own heart with yours. ‍‍‍❤🇵🇭

That is what I call gratitude. Thank you Jay for noticing these things that we keep "enduring" or for a better term, "tolerating". Have you heard the story of sisig? It came about when the American colonizers just left the heads of pigs to their Filipino servants (after splurging on all the parts of the pig), because it was the least appetizing portion and it was treated as "rubbish". Yet the Filipinos turned it into a dish that's now recognized the international cuisine. This is the kind of message we need. Enough of tolerating poor quality and abuse from people who try to take advantage. I guess a lot of us should learn the Art of Saying "NO!".

Point(s) well taken, Jay. Well said! I was born and raised in the Philippines and currently living abroad. Your honest observations are heartfelt and insightful. May we ALL learn from this and make things better. Thank you to you, Sacha, Story and Poppy.

💯% true! Philippines and the Filipinos are very beautiful, but sad to say the gov’t is not treating us well, corruption everywhere, gov’t services are bad, quality of life is mediocre but like you said we are resilient we are patients eventhough we are suffering we have voices but we chose to remain silent bec we are resilient which is not a good thing. We should not accept bad treatment from the gov’t or from our own people. We really deserve more. We deserve to be treated better!

Good perspective, Jay. I say this hits right at home. We Filipinos have endured but it doesnt translate to something good for our fellow Filipinos. We actually only realize it when we get out of our country and get that perspective in a foreign land. Which many Filipinos wont have a chance to experience. All in all your video was nice and inspiring and truthful. ❤

This is what I see in our culture, I couldn't say it any better. I've been bothered by it since the day I saw it. I thought no one else see's what I see, so I just ignore it. and that's part of the problem too. Thank you for this heart felt, good intent message. I hope more of my filipino people will see this. This is an eye opener for all.

Thank you so much. Your message is so heartfelt, and you expressed sincerely. It's truly an eye-opener. I, myself, am guilty. I live in the US, and each time we stay in the hotel in my hometown in North of thePhils, I try to endure the low quality that we pay for just because we want to support the local business. I hope your message will reach the ears of our leaders so they would push for a globally competitive tourism marketing strategies. Our country is tailing behind Thailand and Vietnam. It's so sad😢 when, in fact, before martial
law, we were next to Japan in terms of economic progress.
God bless you and your family. Thank you for loving our country and our people.

Somehow it is hard to see when you live from within, but an outsider with no biases can give a different perspective and we must listen and must take at look if it is really what we do or what we don't do. Somehow someone's observation applies to some of us and change is what we must do or accept.
