Really great review and fair points made for both sides to this. I don't think anyone goes into this expecting it to be positive, it's notoriously a very heavy/'this will break you' book...but I also agree with your point that there could have been some balance...some hope or glimmer of positivity to help pull the reader through, what is essentially, 700 pages of trauma. I mean, I loved it from a 'reading experience' POV and felt massively drawn to the characters, but equally watching your review has made me reflect on it a lot. Also 100% that this isn’t one I’d recommend lightly, but I am glad I read it.

I agree with your review. And I agree with comments in here… we weren’t really shown why he was such a nice character, we had to just assume he was. Glad I read it but a bit too depressive for me!

A little life was a great time! I cried and I felt so many emotions and I loved that! I was like YESSssSSs make me cry! It certainly WAS written very well. I think for the people who hate it… you take literature way too serious. Of course it gets unrealistic at points, but who cares? If I wanted super realistic storylines I would go pick up a non-fiction. I gave it 5 stars. Would give it more if it was possible.

I wouldn’t say I take literature serious at all, I just got slightly fed up with the constant depressive moments. I didn’t cry, I just wanted something positive to happen 😂

Absolutely agree with your review. I thought it was brilliantly written but ultimately far too depressing for me. I'm glad I read it but it's not one i'd ever read again.

It's so bleak. A beautifully crafted anti-fairy tale that constantly surprises with just how dark it gets. It doesn't feel like it is dark for the sake of it, although there are moments where it stretches credulity, but a sincere and very sad story. It's not a tragedy, you need some prospect of success for a real tragedy, where this is always clearly a downward spiral.
I think it's worth mentioning that it's not intended to be realistic, nobody in the real world becomes a top global movie star by making weird niche art movies, after all.

In a way it was well-written, but it also had a lot of telling and not showing. Like, they all Love Jude, but why? The author doesn’t show why he’s wonderful. We don’t see him as a litigator but we’re told he’s the best. What about him makes his law professor adopt him as an adult? Why does his doctor friend break all sorts of medical boundaries for him? And yes, obviously the copious abuse. Excessive, unrealistic and even worse manipulative. Not a fan.
