translation note I'm using the NASB translation of the Bible, which I've used for more than a decade to study. It is a "formal equivalency" translation, which means it attempts as literal a translation as possible from the Greek, which is key for Bible study. Other popular "formal equivalency" translations are the ESV, KJV, and the NKJV.
"Dynamic equivalency" translations convey thought for thought, rather than word for word. These include the NIV and NLT. The Message Bible is not so much a translation as a paraphrase.
