Thanks for this, I always get annoyed by that knight move to c6 right after nf3. I used this in my local club and finally beat this expert I've been trying to beat for weeks. So thanks!
hmm I think at 11:50 you lost your knight... queen moves A5 check, then takes knight... I think? would you maybe move to e2, or just go back to b1? or if queen moves a5, move up C pawn? then white queen protects knight, but this could be a bad game for white, once black brings out its white square bish
hey Kevin, can you show some of your games and analyze them? I know you did one blitz game awhile back but I'd love to see one of your standard time games so we can see your thought processes in the game. if possible, thanks.
At 5:20, wouldn‘t it be better to play d5 to break down white‘s control of the center? Since he already has double pawns on the c file. And after that, depending on whar white does, play Nf6 and castle on the king side.
c3 blocks check and opens the white queen's defense towards the knight. I've missed such a move multiple times in the past haha, it's time I remember it.
It's interesting that you recommend BxN so strongly. I learned about the Rossolimo from someone who was equally vehement about not doing that; playing c3 early and, if Black attacks the B, retreating it to c2 which is a pretty good diagonal for it.
In the first half of the video you are actually only focusing on ...Rb8. But since it doesn't threaten anything as you showed, isn't it a waste of time to play it? So aren't other moves better for black?
Hey Kevin great video! I totally love all your videos detailing a particular opening in depth. You do such a great job if keeping it simple so that players less experienced than yourself can truly grasp the theory of any particular opening, while at the same time giving more experienced players the deep thought analysis they need. My question is after d3 what is the best response if the written comes to a5 for a quick annoying check? Bd2 seems of course like the obvious response but that seems to Jack up the whole game plan you are going for in bringing the knight to the same square. How would you respond to that and what does the play line look like after Qa5? Thanks in advance for yours or anyone's response to my query here. Please keep up the great videos, especially for fighting the Sicilian defense as white. I usually open with kings pawn and my uncle (a great chess player) is a master at the Sicilian defense, so all the vids about the Sicilian defense I study with the utmost scrutiny so I can defeat him, or at the very least give him a tough game.
A nice trap if your opponent insists on not doubling his pawns with 3...Qc7, is to play 4. Nc3. The right move for black is preventing the knight from jumping in to d5 with 4...e6. But if black plays 4...a6-which, to be clear, is not a mistake-, then white plays 5. Nd5, and the only move to prevent the doubling of pawns is 5...Qd6? 6. Bxc6 Qxc6?? 7. Ne5 Qd6 8. d4 protecting the knight, followed by Bf4 supporting a potential fork on c7. Black should allow his pawns to be doubled and play 5...Qd8 or Qb8.
3.Na5 gives up control over central squares white now can control the center with 4.d4! Qc7/Qb6 ends up in the same scenario as after 4.Bxc6 4.Qxc6 5.d4! again white controls the center.
all the moves i've mentioned are good playable moves up to master and even the grandmaster level. You can check www.365chess.com database. Black can also play Nd4 as another option. If 3...Na5 and white plays 4. d4 then black can play 4...a3 to kick whites bishop and then simply take whites d4 pawn with the c pawn possibly leading to the knights being traded off. Black has completed his goal by trading off the c pawn in exchange for whites d pawn. I've found at least 1 game where black wins with this variation at the 2500 to 2600 level. if Black goes for Qc7/Qb6 idea, after 4. Bxc6 ...Qxc6 5.d4 is actually a very big blunder because the queen can take the e pawn with check and also the d4 pawn is being attacked by the c pawn. White might as well resign the game being a pawn down so early in the game with no compensation. the moves to consider for white in that position are castling, d3 or Nc3 after 4... Qxc6.
oakenguitar3 that is not a viable source as it is just another chess web site. Qa5? could simply be defended with Bd2 attacking the queen giving you no time to take the pawn on d4 white gains a tempo and is now ahead in development black needs to find compensation for loss of tempo to equalize. a3 is nothing special as i can just move it to a4 keeping the bishop in the game while white still has center control.
You need to proof read your comments before you post them because that last one isn't making any sense as Qa5 wasn't even mentioned before and a3 isn't a move for black to begin with. You need to include the number the move was made as well. You need to reread what I typed because its correct! I have example games that i'm looking at. 3...Qa5 is playable for black but it allows white to double blacks pawns so its not relevant to my discussion. after white plays 3.Bb5, black has the options to play Na5, Nd4, Qc7, or Qb6 which are the variations that allow black not to have his pawns doubled. Black has many more playable moves but these 4 moves are the ones to consider if black doesn't want doubled pawns in the beginning of the game and its something that this video doesn't mention. www.365chess.com is the biggest chess database online so there is nothing wrong with using it. If you play the Rossolimo variation as white, you need to be aware of these moves or you'll be headed in unfamiliar territory in just 4 moves.
kevin, you are just amazing to listen to. your timing is just perfect. you stick in just the right length of pauses to give my brain a chance to 'get' what you are saying. you just seem to say everything perfectly! I'm 67 and haven't played chess since high school but I am just thrilled that youtube suggested this video to me. I subscribed but I have no idea what that means. (yes! I do know that the BIG RED SWITCH is the one that turns the computer on.off.) I do have one question. I have no place to set up a chessboard but I'd love to play chess with an old old buddy through email. is there a program that will allow me to do that? if I had a place to set up a chessboard we could play through the mail like that but I was hoping for some program we could put on our computers that would just keep track of the game for days, weeks, or months. the only thing I seem to be able to find online is sites where I can play real-time people which is not what I want at all. like I said, it's been a long time. I need a lot of time to rattle things around in my head. I just hope you know of such a program. (I hate to have to say this but it can't be a very expensive program, on a limited income it's a bit hard to justify spending a ton of money 'just to play a few games of chess.' I'm hoping that someone knows of a program that would help me. ty.
You can register at www.chess.com and play "online chess" which is a correspondence game (24h to 14days per move). The same with tournaments. It is absolutely for free (basic status).
I think black has the overall advantage tbh. Whites down a Bishop, black has better center control (IMO) and at 11:50 queen A5, puts king in check and takes knight, regardless of how they defend.
Thanks for this, I always get annoyed by that knight move to c6 right after nf3. I used this in my local club and finally beat this expert I've been trying to beat for weeks. So thanks!
Great to see that you are making opening videos again. Keep up the good work!
You should make videos more often. I love them
Finnaly! Man that was forever! Great vid
Thanks I like to play the Moscow variation and this keeps with the 3 Bb5 motif.
i was really looking into this opening you couldn't have made it at a better time!

The knight is not lost. If they play Qa5+ then c3 is great for white. It stops the check, protects the knight and now the queen is awkwardly placed.
+thechesswebsite pawn takes knight
@@cameronchristiansen2852 he doesn’t mean move the knight, he means move the pawn on c2 to c3

I never heard of this opening but it looks very interesting

nevermind xD didn‘t watch the video to the finish to see all variations.
11:52 Qa5+ here gains the Knight, right?
c3 blocks check and opens the white queen's defense towards the knight. I've missed such a move multiple times in the past haha, it's time I remember it.
Can someone explain what's the difference between a tactical player and a positional one? I don't get it.
Video in minute 11:53 you say we can place knight on a4 but it loses to Qa5* check?
@Tyler Alonso then pawn takes knight
@Tyler Alonso there's a black pawn on d4, it'd take your knight on c3.
@Tyler Alonso if you protect the check with anything but knight, then queen takes on knight a4 and you're down material.
@Tyler Alonso oh I missed the discovered attack that makes sense
@Tyler Alonso when you said c3 I kept reading it as n.c3, to block check for some reason. Lol my bad
Why is white concerned with the bishop pinning down the knight at 7:30? If Bg4, h3, Bh5, and g4 traps the bishop.
It's interesting that you recommend BxN so strongly. I learned about the Rossolimo from someone who was equally vehement about not doing that; playing c3 early and, if Black attacks the B, retreating it to c2 which is a pretty good diagonal for it.

11:53 what about Qa5? c3 is forced. Black shouldn't take, but whites d pawn looks a bit weak doesn't it?
pawn c3 protects check and open the queen to defend the knight, the position is +1.4
At 11.50 moving the knight to the A file results in lost material due to Qa5 check no?
Actually I'm being dumb. c3 means the queen protects the knight

nice. But i would like even more to get some hints about Qc7 or Nd4 as for black responses. Thank you for the vid.
Yeah, I think Stockfish recommended 3... Qc7

Very very compicated opening
This is just not a good opening if you are below 2000
What if Queen comes out to b3?
What if 3.Bb5 Qc7 ?
my favourite opening as white
Ivanchuk played this against Kasparov in the Linares tournament and winded up boxing all of Kasparov’s pieces into submission.
what about 3. Qb6
My go to after 2. c6, when I play the Sicilian I go 2. d6
Here?
I don't play this way against the Rossolimo. Black doesn't have to let his pawns be doubled since he has Qc7 or Qb6 and even Na5
3.Na5 gives up control over central squares white now can control the center with 4.d4!
Qc7/Qb6 ends up in the same scenario as after 4.Bxc6 4.Qxc6 5.d4! again white controls the center.

Rossolimo has the same idea as Nimzo-Indian, doubling pawns on c pawn, then goes to endgame or attack the c5...
My favourite King's indian attack
The bishop on b5 is very annoying, that's why i play the O'Kelly Sicilian
complicated, black should avoid 2. .. Kc6 in general, i prefer playing 2. .. g6 immediately.
