This parable of the rich man and Lazarus, “without a parable did He speak to them” had nothing to do with a hell or eternal punishment. When these mysteries of His Word were spoken, Jesus would always leave clues. Doesn’t God want us to dig a little deeper to understand these mysteries? (Hebrews 6:1-3) Jesus grants understanding to those who seek after him. (Matthew 13:10-17) Who was the man with no name, who had five brothers, who was the man with a name, or what prophecy was fulfilled when the dogs came? From the pulpit today most, but not all, teach these this parable this way. If you don’t believe you will burn in hell forever like the rich man. For we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that his banished ones are not expelled from Him. (2 Samuel 14:14) This Word of God shows us over and over that God is a loving God, not a punitive one, so why are we?
