- A Tale of Two Cities is an 1859 novel by Charles Dickens. It is set against the backdrop of the French Revolution in the late 18th century. The two cities mentioned in this novel are London and Paris. In the complex plot that follows, Sydney Carton sacrifices his own life for the sake of his friend, Charles Darnay and his wife, Lucie Manette.
