  • It was time to leave Pine Grove Furnace and get to hiking! It was another hot day but it was time to face it head on. Would Pensylvania be the rocky nightmare people keep telling us about?

You mentioned a mayo packet a few episodes back. Arby's Horsey Sauce packets. A highly addictive mix of horseradish and mayo. Just enough heat to get your attention.

I’m glad you’re in it for the fun! There’s a few who are going to be at katadin and not even remember the experience....
    You’ve got a great pace.
    Keep up the great work!

There's always a trade-off I suppose, go fast, miss stuff, or dawdle and never make it. Or even a trade-off in the having fun, an hour "here" means an hour less somewhere else. Still, agree w/ SM that don't understand those who try to set records, if I ever see say Scott Jurek, for example, I'm going to trip his ass, although he'd probably be by me in a blink of an eye. He's missed the point. (Also a little po'd at the alcohol thing in a state part he's breaking the rules because he's special) So yeah, love Jay's pace here, love his sense of wonder, love the pictures of plants and identifying some here (with help from like Abigail James below) a little balance of everything, you don't want this to be a Botanical expedition either.

I hate the humidity, too. Saps your energy and drops your pace, plus the need for more water. I like to get up real early when it's hot, maybe take a long break mid day, then hike in the evening. Last one to finish wins, so keep up the pace LOL.

Flowers at 3:53 are most likely Dame's Rocket which blooms in colors from almost white to a pretty strong dark pink. At 6:01, the flowers are mountain laurel. Same thing at 6:20 - those mountain laurel are really tall for those plants! Love the rocks at 16:00. Guessing the ferns at 21:30 are hay scented because they are not growing in clumps, but are spread out.

Flowers at 6:24 are Kalmia = Mt. Laurel. The brown spots on the leaves is a very common disease caused by a fungus, Cercospora. Therefore, Cercospora leaf spot.

If you want to keep cooler you need to keep your head and neck cooler. Remove the hat and you'll stay cooler. Extremely short hair is cooler. Or you can put a cotton bandana on your head and pour a little cool water on it at intervals.
