Every night before I go to sleep I put on via TH-cam I'll Be Seeing you in all the familiar places. My nana would sing it with her cranking that viola record player which even when one Christmas Santa brought her a updated stereo she wasn't having it . I always thought it was so pretty with that huge cone horn . Then of course my nana would play Smile there had been many of versions but I loved Jimmy's hand down. I still say Good Night Mrs. Calabash. I can cry watching all I grew up with right down to Ed McMahon and Johnny Carson show. I will always tell anyone who listens that the 1900s was Americas best from the moment our silent movies came into talkies . I was born 1959 and I had the best of both my nana's and mother's childhood best to mine. Comedy was the best , actors the best , Hollywood was so beautiful when the stars came out to that carpet what class. What Class ! T.v. had the best movies series, I can still remember loving to catch The Sonny & Cher show in the afternoon the great Jackie Gleason. Soap operas just pure entertainment. Saturdays as a kid was special Kellogg cereal with prizes along with the best cartoons ever and the series like the Monkeys,, Beatles , Batman , it wasn't filled with reality flith and no talent like these days. The Twilighlight Zone and that cute little silhouette of a fat belly Alfred Hitchcock his show what thrills then our great Star Trek. I could go on . Family was always together, You went to church now you can't get into one. Yup, now I watch all the old great black in white classics like my two favorite movies The Elephant man - famous line I am not an animal I am a human being. Still chokes me up. Let's not forget the saddest movie to me , The Hunchback of Notre Dame with a cruel line, that famous line, ( this will kill that ) I loved Victor Hugo the last line in the movie , why wasn't I made of stone like thee? That movie was made in 1939 I was born 20 years later. Kids today will never know that feeling of living . These days its devices in each hand sad. Unless they are lucky to have cool aunts like me or uncles to show them all the wonders of what once was .. Dam, right down to Archie Buncker All in the family to the Jeffersons . I told ya I could go on. LOL.. sorry for the book . Thank you for posting this gem. Good night Mrs Calabash Blessings to us all. Again, thank you for posting. 💜

I had the pleasure of seeing Jimmy
“In person” in 1968, in Columbus,
Ohio. He was on stage for over 2 hours. He had those young dancers and extras exhausted. What a showman & a legend he was.

He invented that way of speaking and singing, which is unusual, yet, even when he sings a serious ballad, it has the charm that Jimmy created, and what makes it so nice is that he has perfect pitch. He was a unique talent. This video amazed me at every turn. What professionalism.

He passed away when I was a boy. I knew more about him through older people, who quoted him.
No controversy. No 'dark underbelly'. A gentleman, by all accounts.

Jimmy Durante was one of the most extravagantly, outrageously talented people EVER. He had perfect pitch, perfect rhythm, an infallible bear-trap memory, a limitless capacity to learn and choreograph lengthy NEW routines (he did a new one EVERY week on radio and TV), and to pull them off effortlessly, EVERY TIME, without a hitch. Most remarkable of all was his ability to make THE SIMULTANEOUS TOTALITY OF ALL THE ABOVE look so commonplace and casual, that nobody notices it! Case in point: Only "demef" and I have said anything on this thread about Durante's true excellence. If you think what Jimmy did was easy, TRY IT YOURSELF!

Thanx, eugenecheese, so much for sharing this little treasure!
    Keep 'em coming, please?
I was 3, and I'd climb out of my bed, and sneak down the hall and hide behind the couch so I could watch My Boyfriend, Jimmy Durante, on his show. Mama and Daddy knew I was there, and they knew I was in love with Mr. D, so they let me stay up and watch him with them, on our black and white tv.
I'd sing Inka-Dinka-Doo with him, and, at the end, I'd say, Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are, and watch while Jimmy walked through those spotlights, until he cleared that last spot, and the credits rolled. Then I'd kiss my folks, and go back to bed, singing Inka-Dinka-Doo.
I wanted to grow up to be a Durante Girl, and that's what I told everyone.
    I still love that man.
So glad I got to see him again, just as i remember him.
RIP, Mama and Daddy, and darling Jimmy, and thanx, all, so so very much for the magic, music, and memories.

During this it was mentioned how Durante was generous to his guests wanting them to be at ease , and successful . This was a trait that was passed down to newcomer Garry Moore on their WWII era radio show . Moore passed it down to Carol Burnett on his TV variety show . In turn Burnett passed this generosity down to Korman , Lawrence and Tim Conway on her show allowing each to shine and even at times take over her TV show . Jimmy Durante was a great entertainer and humanitarian .

Jimmy Durante died long before I was born, but somehow I've known who he is for as long as I can remember. What a brilliant man: as Leonard Maltin said, he was truly unique. It wasn't just his unmistakable appearance and voice. He was a brilliant, multi-talented entertainer, a genuinely charming man with whom everyone wanted to work, and a living legend (while he was alive, that is 🙃) whose memory lives on to this day. (I'm watching this in 2023.) I wish this documentary told more about his life, but it was great to see so many clips of his performances.

Durante was one of a kind. Someone else said, he was the uncle we wished we had. But he was more than an act: back then people needed real talent and wit. In his latter years, he tried to convey his message in song: listen to the words. People were different then: natural. The era before big mac and kfc. @10:50 all ladies are beautiful, but the lady seated to Durante's left is simply gorgeous. After 70 years of GMO foods, doubtful we will see the likes of such ladies again. America has become drugged-up, dumbed-down, over-weight, and vulgar.

What impresses me most about Jimmy's shtick is how lengthy and elaborate the bits were, requiring all sorts of memorization of the lines and the gags. Yet, he did it seamlessly, seldom missing a beat. Look at that Beret skit. It HAD to have been created for TV, not some old vaudeville routine he had done 50 years earlier. Jimmy didn't falter once other than getting the well-earned giggles when he was lifted by the waif dancing girls.

Someone like Jimmy only comes around once in a lifetime. The first time I remember seeing Jimmy was on the wall of The Brown Derby taking up two frames. One of his head and the other of his nose on I Love Lucy. And around the same time I saw him on a bugs bunny cartoon. Since then I had been looking out for him. I was bigger than life itself.
