Used to be the same when I started DJing 11 years ago, but the shyness goes away. I now do two radio shows a week streaming live online and chat on the mic giving shout outs and playing requests. Im confident on the mic when Im DJing in the clubs. To overcome my fear I used to pretend I was presenting a radio show (in the very early days) and got used to own voice. As time went on the confidence grew and grew.
To Djsilentblaze, my friend you need to over come this , !! i sound Welsh sometimes , how about a Frencjh person speaking in English , or an Australian, we all have our diferent ways of speech, AND WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF IT!!!
You sound fine to me! It does seem to be the most common cause, that people don't like hearing themselves. I did hospital radio for many years, and also a bit of pirate radio, so I'm used to talking to myself! It also helps when people hear your show and give you positive feedback.
This really helped me out. Since I'm a teenager, it's even more difficult for me to overcome the mic. I have a gig this Friday and I'll give your advice a try. =D
this is very good advice im not much of a talker let alone lookin at someone when im talkin to them im going to try this at home and overcome this shyness thnx for the vid ellaskins -Dj detector
doing radio made me have to listen to myself and it was weird at first but after a few times i kinda started ranting cause i was used to it.....so yeah give yourself the time to listen to yourself first.......it aint so great to jump right into it Good one J love your vids! Practice & N'joy!
Dude you got great stuff.. I'm cool on the mic at the beginning of the night but I find myself getting progressively shy the more people come in and the dance floor floor fills. I get too focused on the mix and find it hard to break in after I haven't spoken in a while.. but this is great advice. Will use.
Jonathan its a good video but ca u PLEASE do a video where u explain how to set up a microphone or multiple microphones so they all work properly? I was doing a karaoke recently and it was a big problem for me! thank you
Yeah a bit of variety is always gonna go your way. I think there was a time when all the irish folk doing tv would emulate that clean accent that you hear in those older tv productions and the like. What it comes down to time and time again, is sounding clear and sounding confident. Everything else is a bonus in my opinion. There's nothing worse than a dj using a mic wrong, to low, gain to high and just muttering. I must say the dj's I've seen in the uk are very inclined to make that mistake
first time i deejayed i got a spot in a bar in town .. i would get complemented by my employers and even a few of the public on my sets .. but the critisicm i got was from my employers and that was i didnt use the mic.. im a shy person in general with a fear of sounding or saying something stupid which transfers itself onto the mic , also dont believe in my voice or what im going to say but im going to try the tips from this video and hopefully i can gradually over come it
Right when he said "U r now the center of attention and people all of a sudden look at u" Or something like that, my eyes widened like and i said "Oh shit, people are gonna stare at me like what might he say" And then i almost pissed myself (Not literally) and then i watched the rest of the video, now, im ready to take on my first book at some Halloween party, These videos first inspired me to because a DJ, now, about a year later, ive got gigs all from watching his videos. Love em
It is Important that the person is the centre of attention, cause it's the DJs Job to Announce his or her Birthday or what ever the case might be. If you do not chat or talk over the Microphone While DJING, It is Bad. Cause Now people maybe wondering why is the DJ not talking? Then they may go to another DJ. My Encouragement is to any first time Mic User, is: Get used to it, you will over come it. It is about Having Confidence in yourself.
Very true I still in the process of overcoming mic shyness. And the way I do is by telling a quick joke or two. such as "if anyone outthere can not hear me please raise you hand" and of course is obvious they can hear me but I want to see who falls for it. anyway a joke or two usually help me.
1. WATCH THIS VIDEO 10 minutes before you start your gig 2. drink a couple of shots get that buzz or jsut get drunk 3. DJ like your life depends on it 4. get that MIC AND SCREAM!
Funny thing is I absolutely hate my own voice. I think I sound like a dork. I watched my recent gigs logs and think "damn, I sound like that?" I got into djing because I liked mixing records like I saw in the Beat Street movie when I was a kid, not sounding like "Mr. Radio Guy". To me, it's the absolute worst part of being a dj. I still have trouble getting over how I sound after many years.
My advice to anyone is just to talk to yourself, find the clearest and most cool way to speak, then do it at home and on the way to gigs, wherever, its stupid. But then when you get on the Mic, breath like your talking normally but keep that DJ voice, breath casually though, "Good afternoon gang, welcome along...(breath).....First and foremost, a big congrats to our birthday girl ... (breath) etc. DONT try and get the whole of your intro to the night out in one breath, its not a good thing.
Damn English coming over here taking our gigs... ;) Speak for yourself man! Irish accents are among the most popular in the world. Its all about being happy with what you've got dude, and you have that in spades!!
Jonathan, if your frightened to use a mic, dont dj. It's as important as playing music.. You've done this video but in all honesty told those that are, absolutely nothing. So I will. 1. Hold the microphone as close as possible to your mouth, it sounds louder, and makes you at least sound confident. Nothing worse than hiding it down by your chest and whispering. 2. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, pick ONE person in the audience and talk DIRECTLY TO THEM. This will come across as "Talking to them, opposed to talking at them.". Practice that then you will enjoy.
HI all I can understand what you are on about but shyness for a DJ! sorry the two don't mix. If you suffer from shyness find some thing else because there is nothing worse than a DJ who can't speak or have a laugh on the mic.You realy need to feel the crowd and enjoy. Regards DJpete8
Useful seeing as I SHIT my self with a Microphone in front of people! I'm confident enough to go mix with a set of numark cdn22 which as we all know don't start on PLAY as you would like, but I over come that if I screw up, easy fix. Microphone, not so easy, and doesn't matter how loud I have it, I still think people don't here me and look like a total bell end. Who's listing anyway unless its last orders? I got a week to do this and look like a total wazz soon anyway :)
I hate if the dj is talking on a party i've been on a Party where Dr.Motte was playing and he was in a jury of a dj contest which took place on this evening and he always screamed into the sets of the dj stupid things like "Yeah party anybody on the dancefloor YEEEAAAHH" thats really childish so dont use your microphone like being a dj on an autoscooter

Really good advice man. I used this advice 2-3 years ago and because of this, I have been getting more clients!
