What was wrong with dive
@@cutthroat795 prankster prioritizes assist, assist goes to dive, 1st turn dive's semi-invincibilty activates.
2nd turn and prankster doesn't activate because the pokemon is now using 2nd turn dive instead of assist and, because of low speed, the opponent would move before the diver, missing its attack. 2nd turn dive activates and attacks the opponent while moving last. Next turn they repeat the process.

It happened to me on Pokemon Showdown Nat Dex Ag. My opponent only had Liepard with Assist Substitute Nasty Plot and Dark Pulse, and Shroomish that only had Spore. It would put my mons asleep and set up nasty plot to sweep. It's not exactly the same as how Wolfey described it, but I'm more wary of cat pokemon and pokemon with prankster.

Works. As long as your opponent doesn't have an ice type, a dark type, Sturdy, Neutralizing Gas, Wonder Guard, Disguise, higher priority moves, Focus Sash or Dynamaxing.

Unfortunately dark types can only be unaffected by assist, but not the move it calls

Then you bring in a Tapu that isn’t Lele or any other terrain setter not Indedee and put up Sandstorm, and hope they did not bring Aurorus, Alolan Sandslash, or Mamoswine. (Terrain cancels out other terrain, and Sandstorm breaks sashes and makes sure Ice types are still damaged.)
Going into Gen 9 team building with that gem.

Carbink sturdy wins this, just moonblast the cat and win. They are immune to one hit move, but Bastiodon or any other sturdy would work as well. Avalugg doesn't even need to have sturdy.
You can still have sturdy, fake out, ice types, OHKO clause (lol), and higher priority moves
Sturdy sure, but fake out won't KO Liepard and you'd have to outspeed it before priority is accounted for. Ice types are garbage that no one uses. The only higher priority offensive move is Extreme Speed, which is only on a handful of Pokemon. Unless you're packing Dragonite, Lucario, or Arcanine, it's likely you don't have it.
Oooor you could have a Dark type unaffected by Prankster, or use Psychic terrain to turn off priority moves
Sadly, it doesn’t work like this. Inly assist is prioritized and assist is self targeting.

It does though. The dark types are not affected by the move assist thanks to the prankster effect, but they are still affected by the move that assist calls out. Same situation with "me first" or "after you"

Nope, not in this case because the move they're using is assist which targets self so being dark type won't stop it from working.
In order to beat out Prankster Assist Sheer Cold, the only reliable counter would be Extreme Speed, or a priority move being called by a Pokémon that's naturally faster than Liepard (the fastest member of this squad) and praying to OHKO.

Some other counterplay that exists:
* Any Ice-type
* Priority users with higher speed (like Whimsicott), though when it comes to Prankster, Liepard is immune.
* Focus Sash holders
* Any Pokémon with Sturdy
Assist was pretty good in Balanced Hackmons. People would use teams of 5 primal Groudon and 1 imposter Chansey which had Thousand Arrows, with the rest of the moves on the team being uncallable. It was a huge gamble whether you were staring down prankster groudon or adaptability groudon or any number of other abilities and items, and ground is an amazing attacking type with basically no viable resists (and thousand arrows hits flying). It got banned eventually, but just goes to show how insanely tumultuous BH was in generation 7.

I find it funny that the only Pokemon with Prankster and Assist are all cats.
Works even better with No Guard, since it guarantees moves always hit. Just have Machamp with uncallable moves sitting next to your cat. It slows down your strategy, but guarantees that you won't miss.
Without priority, though, I doubt it would do much.
