    Update: You CAN change the ISO in the raw controls in Resolve. You need to change the Decode Quality to "Full res - Canon" and then you can change the ISO. Huge thanks to @TomislavMoze for letting me know. I couldn't figure out how to do it when I was editing this video.

    Everybody here is selling them selves a dream so they don’t have to spend the extra money on the c80. I own both. I’ve done real world comparisons. The dynamic range is barely noticeable. If you really want your c80 footage to look c70ish all you need to do is drag your tint slider and bring your sharpness down by about 30% and voila. The images look identical. What does matter here is that the c80 is full frame so i dont need to spend thousands of dollars of new lenses and the noise performance is significantly better in low light run and gun situations.

    I think the R5C offers a tremendous value for the price. Having the ability to take superb stills, yet also having the cinema OS menu with unlimited recording in a smaller form factor is amazing. Not to mention that it has an EVF, which is sadly lacking from the C70/C80! I'm really hoping that Canon releases an R5C II in the future, and I think there would still be a big demand for it (despite the R5 II already being out). There's enough to differentiate the R5C line from the R5 II (built in fan, cinema OS, no ibis, more video tuned, etc.). Canon, please release an R5C mark II.

    • @sethcoogan
      @sethcoogan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I could not agree with you more! Love the R5C, and I'm not even a photographer, just strictly video. The 8k with downsampling, timecode, cinema OS, it's awesome. Can you imagine a newer model with a full-sized HDMI, Clog2, and, who knows, maybe an SDI out? That thing would sell like hotcakes.

    Canon... give us open gate and RAW highlight recovery on the C80 / C400!!!! As for C70 vs C80... honestly having used both IMO they're both great, with different minor pros and cons. I do feel the C80 is SLIGHTLY more versotile with the better rolling shutter, tripple ISOs, 6K and larger sensor for more lens choices / bokeh. But really it's all only only slightly nicer and probably not worth 'upgrading' if you have a C70 or find a great deal on a used C70. Great video :)

    Solid review. For the low light 12800 test you’ll see a bigger difference if you did the side by side in the evening with the 3 cameras. The well lit scene down plays the difference quite a bit, I find my c70 unusable above iso 3200 at night whereas the r5c looks good at 3200 and the c80 is even better. The gap is huge at 12800 with only ambient light outside (we shoot evening real estate videos with the 3 cameras so imo a much better use case for the iso).

    Thanks for this review. I was ready to buy a C80, but the fact that you can't shoot 6K in a compressed format is a dealbreaker for me. What a baffling omission from Canon for such an otherwise great camera. Going to stick with the R5C for now, but thank you for such detailed comparisons.

    Great stuff Josh, glad to see you finally got your hands on this! I am curious about not having ISO controls in Davinci as I do have that with the C70 and R5C raws. Maybe we can discuss on your next live? One thing I loved is that the C80 has electronic leveling in it to make sure you're not tilting. The fact that the C70 doesn't have that is a brain-breaking omission from Canon haha.

  • @demz3514
    @demz3514 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Good overview. If only C80 had 6K 60 fps it would be a no brainer in acquiring it, but simply because of this small let down I wouldn't invest in it even despite the XLR, SDI, battery life situation. R5C with a small recorder like the F3 covers the XLR part (or like in my case a ZOOM H6 - more on the chunky side but there are 4 XLR ports on top of the mic attachment). I'm quite surprised and at the same time not in respect to the image quality. The cameras from 2-4 years ago have plateaued in respect to image quality. Sure there are some adjustments like the triple base ISO, however it's not as significant to warrant an upgrade. Obviously that comes from a perspective that one owns a 2-4 year old camera and not a 6-10 year old model. ND filters are definitely a good thing for run and gun scenarios and also if one is using EF lenses or old lenses with an EF adapted lens and having that RF to EF mount with the variable filter then it pretty much covers that aspect.

    Hi Josh, quick question for you about the C80 - I have one, and have noticed the wheel around the set button has more play or movement in it than a mirrorless camera like the R3, for instance (when I say movement I don't mean the actual rotation of the wheel, but instead how it moves a bit more than I'd expect when you push it side to side, up and down, etc) . And the rear dial on the C80 seems to be "looser" or at least move more easily than the dial on the top, which has more resistance. Is this similar to your experience? It doesn't bother me all that much as the dials/wheel still work, but want to make sure I don't have a defective camera haha.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The rear dial which is on the upper right of the back is very loose on the C70/C80. I actually usually disable it because I bump it way too easily. Overall I have never been super impressed with the build quality of the C70, I think they could have done a better job.

Also I need to find the video to source for info, but referencing the hybrids not having a dual based iso, a canon rep specifically talking about the R5ii said the main reason it doesn’t have a definitive second base is software. Cinema eos is the only software they have that specifically designed for a second base.

    I think that in many videos it is taken for granted that one will expose each shot perfectly and the reality is very different. That the C70 in general has better performance when raising or lowering a not so perfectly exposed shot I feel that it continues to keep it as the first option in my case, the triple base ISO does not seem so attractive to me either, because again, to reach that perfect exposure it is better to have the entire ISO range available if they ensure less differences between them. AF and all the other details I feel that the C70 continues to perform extraordinarily considering obviously its current state with all the firmware updates. And above all, not a minor detail, if it continues to be equipped with a large number of top quality EF lenses and you add the speedboster, it makes you even more tied down. In a good way.

      This is why I have said this in many of my videos, the Imatest tests are only one way of measuring dynamic range. We also need to use our eyes and look at actual high dynamic range scenes (like my window test) and the latitude test. I compared these cameras in raw to see what they are actually capable of. You can then clean up the image with different codecs, in-camera noise reduction, noise reduction in post, etc. Gotta compare apples to apples. Thanks for checking out the video.

    There’s a known bug with Cinema Raw Light that ghosts the ISO dropdown in Resolve. I’ve had the same issue with the C400. Even if you change to Full Res. Canon in the Raw control panel it doesn’t always work. This is an issue Blackmagic supposedly knows about but who knows when they’ll fix it.

    We're trying to decided whether to upgrade our R5 to a C80 or R5 mk2. I know it's not a common comparison, but I've had a really hard time finding good info on what we can expect to gain or lose with an upgrade like that. We're attracted to build-in NDs, 6K oversampling, and hope the image is overall closer to the "fine" image from the R5 that we can't shoot in at 60fps like we do for most of our footage. The difference between R5 (and mk2) footage in fine vs standard mode is quite stark when you look at them side by side. Any insights as to whether or not C80 footage looks more like one or the other?
