Yeah, that mysterious kombucha in a bottle with cool design... For Russians it was always a big creepy glass bottle with a creepy mushroom inside the liquid.... Yet the taste was always good. And then a cool and popular drink with a strange name kombucha popped up, and turned out to be that tea mushroom drink.
Dude, I came across your channel when the "tea/cha" video. I like how each video is a really deep dive that most Western channels rarely go to when discussing about Asia. As an Indonesian who's been itching to make some history/linguistics content about my region, I would be more than happy to help you out in your research should you find yourself making something about MSEA! 👍👍👍
Can I ask what did your parents use to get the combucha out and filter it? Was there something like a water tap? Or did they have to tale out the mushroom and bail the tea out with a mug?
I think, that trying to find the origin of Kombucha is like trying to find the origin of the yeast for beer, or bread yeast, it was probably discovered by accident, but i think your theory of Russians trying to make kvass and they accidentally made kombucha makes sense. Before your video i though Kombucha came from a store where they stored tea and honey together, and then fermentation happened and kombucha was created. And was discovered by the sweet smell, while it was forgotten there for weeks.
That kombu doctor story made me die laughing when I first read it on my kombucha bottle. You can tell it was invented by white people to cover up the fact they either didn't like or fucked up the original name of "black tea bacteria" 🤣 My grandma actually used to make kombucha ("hong cha jun") in china in the 1960s. I'm sure *someone* in china or russia knows about the true history of kombucha, but right now it's impossible to find actual factual information in English about it.
Correction: It was brought to Europe and the USA by Czechoslovak legionnaires at the end of World War I. Who had to fight all over Russia. All the way to Vladivostok, from where they went back to Europe. And back home to the Czechoslovak Republic.
I loved everything about this video. But (if I may) add a teeny tiny little constructive critique, I think turning the piano music down a bit would make it easier to hear the words you speak from your mouth. Thanka yoooooo
I suppose that most east asian people in the past (including south-east asian) did not add any sweetness like honey or syrup in tea. Right? Adding sweetness in tea is the drinking behavior of European people including Russian. Perhaps, Kombucha is a kind of accident of one-week fermented honey tea by one of Russian or European. I have just made my kombucha at home for one week. Kombucha consists of black tea, honey or syrup, and some specific fungi (yeast+bacteria). After 1 week fermentation, it tastes like honey-lemon tea soda and is better than Coke 😊. It is so cool.
As a native born and grew Chinese in a traditional Han province. Before I go to other country I never heardbout Kombucha at all. And after I taste it I do 100% believe this tangy acidity bubbling drink is not China origin. No, its not fit Chinese drinking habits, not at all. And I believe except people from Shanxi(山西)Province most Chinese would be very hard to suit and accept this drink's taste and flavour, but except whom from Shanxi cuz they just drink aged Chinese black vinegar as a daily beverage.....
The heck? My family is literally from Shanxi and nobody does that... It's true we do prefer black vinegar in noodles, as dipping sauce for dumplings, etc. though. On another note, don't drink vinegar. It'll erode the enamel on your teeth.
I'm ABC but my parents were born and raised in Sichuan. My grandma used to make hong cha jun (红茶菌) many years ago. Of course, American kombucha tastes very different from the traditional kombucha made throughout history, but it is definitely still the same drink.
@@kombuchas4684 I dont know, really. I never heard or even seen this thing anywhere in China... Is that a common thing that in Sichuan you Sichuanese folks will making this as a beverage? Which region 川西or川东? I really feel perplexity like a foreigner while you told me this...
please do not bring tiger balm into this , respect .... the tiger balm lol, when I rarely get a sinus infection I eat kimchi , drink soju and use tiger balm, that's it , cured lol.
The Russians could have invented it or they could have come across natives using it without anyone ever bothering to write something about it, its just a drink
Here is where it came from.....someone a long time ago left out sweet tea. Fungus gnats got in it to create the world's first SCOBY and first brew. Your welcome. If you're inclined to try this go ahead. I just would not want to drink fly water.
Is kombucha healthy? Some say because of the un-fermented sugar it's not so healthy. Because there is always some un-fermented sugar left after fermentation.
You know that sugar doesn't kill you, do you? In fact, if you don't eat sugar at all, this is worse for you, because your brain feeds on sugar only. So it will seek out other sources like fats and proteins to turn them into sugar. And when this is done a lot, this is harmful. Just move around more and eat more food that's hard to chew, bruh
This is such an underrated channel. Keep it up!
Thank you so much!
I liked this video! Found it challenging to follow with the loud high pitched and fast background music though
Sorry about that 😅 I've tried to fix this for later videos

It is Chinese called “KUM BO CHA”. It was a Chinese Fermented Tea.
The word kombucha most likely originates from Japanese "kombu cha", or which refers to an unrelated drink which is basically kelp tea
