    Yes sir! The teacher appears when the student is finally ready... I appreciate this because I've arrived at a place where I ask myself: what could I have done better? Where did I fail in my communication? Did I wrongly assume something in that situation? Point the thumb as you mentioned instead of the finger. Some coaches may not like this but anyone can just show up and make people tired, yell at them and demand obedience. As a coach, I always try to meet people where they are at. Being intentional requires effort and work before hand. Whenever I do the "due diligence", I feel prepared for anything. This is what being a professional is about.

      Miguel Wickert that level of introspection is what separates dilettantes from professionals.

    Another video that has great value. Something that comes to my mind; is that time is linear and learning is restricted by time, but education and information isn't linear. It makes me want to read and listen to all of your resources again and again to get truly encompassing understanding of your knowledge and how it all intertwines. Thanks again for the content.

    Looks like you were right about the angry person archetype who just wants to “thumbs down” videos. Probably some academic who doesn’t really coach, or someone who thinks everyone should bend to their will. Unbelievable that anyone wouldn’t agree with the idea that taking another person’s perspective wouldn’t be valuable. Great video Coach!!!

      Jim Mcdale thanks for your comment and support- I agree it can get frustrating when people react emotionally to things. Many coaches just want their job to be easy. Understanding people is hard and takes a tremendous amount of work and patience. Hope you are finding my podcast and book to be helpful as well!

    Hi Brett, your message is much appreciated. I am writing this as someone who mentors people in his daily job (academia; teaching/mentoring/advising) but also as someone who is an amateur athlete. The message above was very helpful in understanding the dynamics of the coach-athlete relationship I was part of, and helped me realize it was time to move on. I'm not part of the immediate audience/target group, but I guess it does not hurt to point out that your words of advice find their way to help athletes as well! Thanks!

      chaetostoma Very nice to know. Rest assured my target audience is anyone who deals with people. The information shared in my book and courses can transcend professions since many of us work in an area that is social in nature at its core. Really appreciate you commenting and supporting!

    Love this! I can't be too quick to assume about certain obstacles that the athlete may be dealing with and how it is crucial to reflect on my own behavior. The point of "[getting] on their turf" could not have been any more true!

    Hey Brett first and foremost I just would like to thank you for taking the time to post this video it's truly appreciated! I've been blessed with the opportunity to work with a local high school football team doing their Strength and Conditioning program for the summer along with doing some group fitness classes for the general population in my city. I must say that while interacting with my athletes and gen. pop clients I have noticed some of the different archetypes that you've discussed in this video as well as in your book Conscious Coaching. I've found your advice and examples extremely helpful. When working with my athletes and clients I try to incorporate the strategies and examples I've learned from you and other coaches as well. I meet my clients on a level playing field outside of the gym, and weight room. I listen to their experiences and their testimonies to try to figure out their "why" and how it'll carryover into their training. My career choice of preference is to be a Strength & Conditioning Coach/ Performance Coach; despite not being a naturally gifted athlete in the weight room from an athletic or even knowledge standpoint. I've been blessed to have all kinds of experiences with training, and coaching over the years. I'm at a new chapter now in my life where I found out 5 months ago that I have an L4 L5 disc herniation. This has been a HUGE gut check moment and learning experience for me. I thought to blame all of the "bad coaches" I'd worked with and even battled the feeling of resentment toward my father who'd pushed me with my training. The Dr. recently told me that I should try to stay away from performing any squats again. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Looking up to coaches like you, Coach Ron Mckeefery, Coach Jaimie, Coach Holmes, and Coach Joe Defranco to name a few.. have helped make me into the Coach that I am today. I plan on overcoming this injury with the hopes that I'll learn from it and be an even better coach. I've made sure to purchase your course Valued and plan on purchasing any others you might offer in the future. Thanks again for all that you do and congratulations on the little one on the way!

    So there's no "difficult" athletes, only "difficult" coaches? 🤔

    • @BrettBartholomewCoach
      @BrettBartholomewCoach  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Arno Snyman Nowhere in this video did I say there are absolutely no difficult athletes. I also never say that anywhere in my 300 page book, courses or presentations. What I’ve said repeatedly in print, audio and in person is that relationships and coaching are complex and that coaches must take the lead in establishing trust based relationships with their athletes. A coach is supposed to be a leader, guide and problem solver- not someone who points the finger and blames athletes anytime something doesn’t go their way. I highly recommend you review my book and courses should you want to dive deeper into this topic and gain a deeper understanding for the context of this topic or video in general.
