    I want VR to be used to help the elderly live a more interesting life - their world experiences become constrained when they can no longer drive, travel. If you've ever spent time in nursing facilities, you would know what I'm talking about. I would be excited to work on a project like this with medical professionals, social workers, and occupational therapists.

    • @susanmchugh8788

      +Richard Tsai Eventually people age and cannot continue to live the mobile lifestyle you mention. Or maybe they did not have the financial resources to travel. I'm not saying virtual reality would be someone's only interesting life experience but could be used as a therapeutic activity with the elderly.

    The "woah" moment with VR for me was when I borrowed a DK2 from work, and hooked it up to minecraft, and whem that loaded up and suddenly those blocks where litereally 1 meter in size and 5 blocks high felt dangerously high and 10 blocks high felt pants-shittingly high. It was *amazing*

      +Attila Jakab He tries to paint Facebook as altruistic. The amount of data and influence that Facebook has is power no company has ever had. Its influence and power is beyond the government to even understand at this point, much less regulate. Facebook knows more about most people than they know about themselves. With that data they influence people to buy things they don't need better than ever before. They can influence people politically.

    So many comments saying Facebook is shit. Facebook is a tool to use for people that actually have more than a couple friends, or own a business. It's a great marketing tool and a great way to stay in touch with friends. I've lived in 4 different states in the past 10 years, without Facebook I'd probably never see or hear from them again if they changed their numbers. But again, you need actual friends for it to be a useful tool.

    • @Peralisc
      @Peralisc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hunter W dude, facebook sucks for banning you when you use the friend request function
      some fuckers have short memory and forget you after few years, if they remember you all of a sudden then they send the friend request back and even apologise you got the ban few weeks before they sent you the request
      in fact few years ago when i got a new job i felt like adding every new colleague, got a temporary ban all of a sudden, then those guys realize oh it's you who sent me a friend request didn't realize who it was ... sure understand the people not being sure who sends a request
      BUT SINCE FUCKING WHEN is it fucking faggot facebook's business what happens between me and people i know? They can't even fucking verify if i know the people in real life or not so any cunt can just say they don't know me if they feel like it and then i get a ban.
      Absolutely retarded and disgusting social website. There are far better alternatives. Before facebook i used a different website to find girls from all over Europe ... if i were today a teen again and was using facebook same way to find a large variety of girls online then i'd get ban in less than a day.
      Problem is that this is most popular social website and people either don't know about other ones or they too lazy to use other ones

    • @whatNtarnation90
      @whatNtarnation90 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Sounds like you got a justified ban imo. Facebook isn't a "hookup" site, if the people don't know you, don't add them. Simple as that. It's not a place for you to meet people, it's so you can keep in touch with people you already know. I've never been reported for such a thing. Don't be such a creep and you won't get banned.

    • @Peralisc
      @Peralisc 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hunter W
      i just told you i added on facebook people i knew and then you tell me i got a justified ban
      i didn't use facebook as a hook up site, i said i used a different site before facebook for that, but you didn't pay attention
      if you want to lecture me about deserving that ban, then brush up your reading comprehension skills first
      anyways i only wrote that so you can have a clear example of why facebook sucks
      don't be such a creep? do ever make new friends? you sound like you completely isolate yourself and only talk to people that you are forced to talk to, pretty sad

    • @whatNtarnation90

      Quite fucking true. I'm glad I've been able to keep in touch with all my friends from when I was 5 years old to now at 30. I don't care if Mark is an awkward whatever-the-fuck people say about him, the fact is he's made a viable social medium that lets you get around "I'm just too busy" so you can still keep in contact with your friends and family.

      Weird how Valve made a very comparable product without all that FB money. Not to mention all the other VR startups...
      Now Oculus is changing into a fucking closed console, with their own market-place and their own exclusive content.
      None of the VR experiences you talked about have anything to do with Oculus specifically...
      And it might be fashionable to bitch about FB, but I never participated in any social media because I don't give a crap about what people I met once (on Facebook you call these people 'friends') get up to. The people I do talk to regularly (real, actual friends) can tell me about their lives with their own mouths. And I don't fancy having Facebook intruding on what is basically just a piece of hardware and some drivers. They turn everything into a fucking closed-walled garden platform these days.

    • @DrussNL
      @DrussNL 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +John Malkovich
      Seems like you didn't understand what I was saying at all...
      "Weird how Valve made a very comparable product without all that FB money. Not to mention all the other VR startups..."
      Was a reaction to you saying:
      "John Carmack said that they were planning to ship the DK1 as the final
      product if it wasn't for the 2 billion dollars that Facebook invested in
      them. If it wasn't for that money, Oculus would have been a massive failure"
      My meaning being that VR didn't need Facebook at all, and you pulling facts like 'Oculus would have been a massive failure without Facebook' out of your ass while venture capitalists were then and are still now pouring hundreds of millions into VR shows once again that age is not equal to intelligence (unless you can actually look into alternative future's I would stop talking like you can, didn't you learn that in ALL of your years of living?).
      "I gave you two examples of how incredibly beneficial VR technology in
      partnership with Facebook might be to connect people to their family,
      friends and loved ones who live FAR AWAY FROM THEM, as well as attend
      events that might be too expensive for them to attend in real life."
      To quote a dumbass: "Did you even read my comment ?"
      "None of the VR experiences you talked about have anything to do with Oculus specifically..."
      Meant: All the social stuff you talk about is also being worked on by a whole bunch of other VR companies that have nothing to so with FB. Altspace being the most prominent of these companies ATM. But I won't implicate that you are somehow young for not knowing that, because I'm smart enough to know that makes no sense whatsoever.
      Keeping in contact with people across long distances can be easily done without Facebooks help in a variety of other ways. Facebook isn't there for you btw, you are the product they sell in order to make money and that is why I object to them as a company and to them infiltrating the VR market.
      But keep patronizing me grandpa...

    • @westingtyler1
      @westingtyler1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +L0rd Log1c is it really something that can be denied, that Oculus has benefited massively from its being bought by facebook? I agree that I worry facebook may clutter it with ads or something, but if oculus turns out crappy because of facebook, like you said - there are other VR options. I think it benefits VR to have the giant runway facebook can offer it. In a weird way, even Valve and Sony, other VR guys, will benefit from the extra marketing power from the facebook acquisition of oculus. It's all good for VR in the long run, I think.
      But I do take issue with your assessment that friends made online or via facebook don't count as "real" friends. Surely it's a good thing for people to be able to meet and interact with (online, if not in person) people and communities they otherwise would not be able to? As I see it, social media allows people to connect more - it doesn't stop people from meeting in person. it actually allows them to find people WORTH meeting in person someday, assuming they can or want to. If you think about it, it was always an arbitrary limitation that you were only able to meet and engage with people who had similar geography to yours. What town we live in shouldn't affect who we are able to meet, and thanks to social media, now that is not the case. I foresee in the future, people meeting to build actual communities out of virtual communities. Social media allows you to engage intellectually with ideas all over the world in a way that wasn't possible before, right? The only value of others isn't just their atoms you can touch, but their ideas, too, right?

    Crazy how this was just 7 years ago. For the past 3 months I’ve been learning how to develop in VR and will continue to over years to come. This technology is highly undervalued and the skill to develop for this technology is grossly unrecognized. Hopefully by 2030 VR devices will replace smartphones. Currently rocking an iPhone 14 pro and Meta Quest pro for Development. Wonder what devices I’ll have then.

    Yeah, that question about Facebook being spammed with ads was a good one, and Mark's answer is a little cluttered and indecipherable. When he says "the quality of ads will merge with that of organic content"..is he talking about native advertising? Because it sounds like he is basically saying "someday soon we hope we can trick people into thinking ads AREN'T being spammed in their faces, when in fact they are." That's the only thing I can interpret: "high quality ads" = "obfuscated ads that don't look like ads."

    • @onemanshow4116

      @westingtyler1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrBrotmafia
      Sure, I am in favor of entertaining ads, if there need to be ads. I am not in favor of native advertising, which is trying to trick the viewer into thinking it is not an ad but is instead something academic or an editorial piece. If you are right about what Mark means, I am cool with that.

    • @MrBrotmafia
      @MrBrotmafia 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      EricAdamIdeas In many countrys (at least here in Germany) ads have to be marked as ads, tricking people into thinking it is not an ad is illegal... Goes so far that you can't show e.g. brands in regular television programs. Not sure about America though.

      Dan Heather I've tried different things on mobile but I didn't find any satisfactory options. Weirdly enough, Apple is trying out content blocking software. I'm an Android guy, unfortunately on that front. Rather than fighting against ad blocking software, it's becoming legitimised. Maybe companies learned from the failed fight against change in the music industry by learning to adapt. Many of the ad blockers now offer optional unobtrusive ads that have been deemed acceptable. On the desktop side, things are pretty good but the mobile experience should pick up shortly.

    4 years later 2019, what Zuckerburg said is kinda true... what he want to connect people to VR is through Game
    2020 facebook Horizon is coming, few days ago Facebook bought a VR gaming company that have Music connection called beat saber..
    its slow but its getting there..
    Oculus Rift S and Quest sales are great, for a 350-400$ headset
    maybe in another 5 years AAA GAME DEVELOPER, are making lots of VR games just as much PS4 today ...
    many VR youtuber also make a lot of MOVEMENT in gaining VR awareness, 2020 controller is no longer needed because facebook is going to launch Finger tracking...
    some new tech for artificial skins also have promising future with VR, to make people feeling vibration, and touch through artificial skins
    and many more to come, to make VR more exsist to our benefit, with comfort and promising solution on games, movies, industry, and education...
    the Question is... how old are we when VR take off? i hope its not 2030 thing

      +Money Luser Say for example you have a parent who is crippled and in a nursing home. now say you have a party for your 1 y/o child who this parent of yours very rarely gets to see. now imagine having a 3d camera set up in the room where the crippled grandparent can walk around and experience the event. I would say that is something to give a crap about.

      That sounds great and makes for great ads for facebook. But that is less than 0.1% of real facebook users, and the reality is that facebook is not connecting people. It is connecting fake online personae with each other to the detriment of real social interaction. Rather than providing another excuse to not actually bring the kid to see the grandparent once in a while, I would have liked to see Oculus advance human spatial perception and conceptual capabilities. e.g. far better visualization of 4D data.

    While the title of the interview sounds "techie" ... Mark clearly reiterates a message that his goal is expanding the FB mission beyond just connectivity ... a tipping point has been reached with 3.5B mobile computers attached to the Internet ... 4 Billion more to go ... and cites examples of how this is helping lift people out of poverty. The mission expands to include using this connectivity to allow more voices that can coalesce and promote ideas that are important to our world and humanity itself. Address challenges like Healthcare, Education, Unemployment etc. Its about access to fundamental knowledge that everyone should have access to in order to improve their lives and the lives of others. I am a big fan of "Signal to Noise ratio" on the Internet. A simple example is the low number of hits on important topics such as this vs. how many electronic sheep are thrown or cute kitty views :-) FB has made it easier to connect people with common interests and to filter out noise - I think one of the greatest improvements of FB in the last years. My company has been helping enable low-cost connectivity - mobile - in many developing countries as have others and Mark states that there are perhaps only a Billion who don't have reach. This continues to improve. So we get back to valuable connectivity (not just social and entertainment and banal exchanges). FB along with other applications enables the "Signals" to grow whilst filtering out the noise so we can "get down to business". Easier connectivity creates opportunities for everyone - not just developed Nations.

    People are very cynical regarding their acquisition of Oculus. It's the big bad Facebook corporation. In reality, the people that had a say in its acquisition might have made the move because they are genuinely interested in VR tech and gaming. It's like no one can possibly see it as anything but a large evil corporation ruining VR. People like gaming and VR regardless of how rich they are or what their profession or credentials are. Being the CEO of a huge company like Facebook doesn't exclude them from that.

    • @2011blueman

    Things like remote working, conferences, social VR chats...
    He also makes some interesting points about the net neutrality / internet in india controversy. It's interesting that he fails to grasp that if you provide free apples that you undermine the profitability and development of the fruit business. But it is a complex topic that can't be dealt with in dogmatic views.

    VR relies much on our Visual imagination. Since Mark Zuckerberg has been learning Chinese whose written characters are a well-developed pictographic system, it may be a good visual avenue for Mark to explore in his VR venture.
    Remember that the Binary Code - that is founded upon the ancient Chinese philosophical teachings of the I-Ching, or Yi Jing - is at the heart of every computer? :)

    Zuckerberg is very clear in that video and high resolution based platforms require about as much as ten thousand times in data usage than text based ones. And the text based platform is almost costless.
