    I met someone from Latvia 3 years ago and I've been slowly falling in love with Latvia and its people.I'm in the process of trying to learn and speak Latvian. I'm planning to hopefully travel and meet my friend from Lativa. Let's see how things go.

    Thank you Anna for this very detailed video! I moved to Latvia only a few months ago and I found it very difficult to find this information as I can't speak Latvian and only have a very very basic level of Russian. Very useful to see the different language levels, at least now I know where to aim to find a job!

    Hello Anna, I loved watching your video. You obvious have a passion for language learning and it's fantastic to see. I have been an ESL teacher for going on seven years now. I am an American currently teaching in Thailand. Latvia would be an ideal destination for me. How difficult would it be for someone with my background to find a job as an English Teacher in Latvia. I have a TEFL certificate, a Master's in Education and seven years of ESL teaching experience. Just curious, even if you're not sure. Thank you so much!

    • @AnnaSandersonEng

      Oh, I think local universities would be happy to have you as their teacher. We used to have two American professors at the university in Ventspils.
      However, I heard that for Americans it might be somehow complicated to get local documents such as residence permit (well, I heard it about the Americans who'd come to Latvia as a part of some kind of church, so not completely sure about that). Good luck anyway!

      Thank you so much for your reply. Oh yes, the visa paperwork and residence permits are always a pain; no matter the country. I still feel hopeful and will continue to search for jobs in Latvia. Thank you so much for your time and insight!@@AnnaSandersonEng

      Ventspils is a very nice place to live p.s if you have the money, but to find a well-paid job, you have to move to Riga, where you going to have more opportunities.

    @vladislavskokosnikovs8790 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Well this is "simplified" version, your opinion based on your personal experience. And I appreciate that You share it.
    But I must tell that there is a harsh and "pain in the as$" cultural, historical and political context. From year 2024 russian language is pulled out from the state schools so in less than 20 years the role of latvian language will increase also in cities where nowadays russian language dominates.
    Other aspect is that after USSR collapsed all russian political parties (those which occured in Latvia) instead of looking for a way to integrate local russians into latvian society and legal space of Latvia, they decided to look for a way how to integrate russian language into Latvia.
    @AnnaSandersonEng But if we speak about mentality then it is hard for latvians to resist to show their knowledge of foreign languages. It concerns also russian language. This circumstance in Latvia quite often dismotivates russian speakers to learn local language.

      In fact, there was no info provided. Very briefly, Latvia gained independence un 1918. after collapse of Russian Empire and independence war. In 1940. USSR occupied Latvia, deported more then 50.000 people to Siberia, among them more then 10.000 children and infants.
      Property and Land of people were seized, occupation lasted until 1991. During occupation more then 800.000 Russian speaking civil ocupants came to our country Latvia, destroying the social proportion of Russian from 9% in 1939 to almoost 44% in 1989.
      Currently Russian speaking population is arround 27% and decreasing. Majority of them are children of said soviet civil ocupants.
      Only official language in Latvia is Latvian.
      I strongly reccomend to learn it if you want to work and live here.

      Hey! Yes, you can work for 20 hours a week (if bachelor studies) and full time if masters.
      To talk about the salary - hard to say, since it depends on what kind of work you're doing. However, the minimum wage here is around 500 euros. So, I would expect something like 400-500 for part time job
