I've always hated getting up really early to run, it's usually my least favorite part of any race I do. I tend to go for a middle of the day run, my job let's me start a little earlier and just that a long lunch.
@@ansizfark This sounds ideal! You’re lucky to be able to flex your work hours to accommodate a midday run! I assume you don’t live in a very warm place? A midday run in the summer in Florida isn’t really an option for me.
@@its_Matt_B_ I live in NC, but I live in the country and work from home. The running isn't really sexy, it typically is mostly on the road with no sidewalks! Or even on my treadmill!
75 degrees is crazy warm! lol. My bedroom is usually between 66-68 🛌
@@dazdarren9926 Ooh! 66°-68° sounds nice and chilly! 🥶 Is sleep SO well in those temps!
🛏️ good morning. Saw this just as I woke up this morning and reminded me that I often have trouble sleeping the night before a run as I get nervous that I will miss my alarm. 😂
@@davidg9120 I can relate to this, especially on the night before races when I have to get up earlier than usual!
I’ve also found I have trouble sleeping the night before a long run or a hard workout.
When I was in my teens and early 20s, I flew out of bed. When I was in my 30s and early 40s, I jumped out of bed. When I was in my 40s and early 50s, I rolled out of bed. Now that I am north (south?) of 60, I barely get out of bed. 🛌😴
@@MyFatAdaptedLife C’est la vie! It’s good you recognize the progression and don’t try to fight it! I’m currently enjoying my rolling era!
🛏️ I also sleep in a warm room! I just hate being cold. This video makes me feel motivated to go to bed early tonight!
@@annewright3486 What is a “warm room” to you? I have a feeling it’s different from me due to our different climates! 😄
282 feet is the perimeter of an international basketball court (92x49)
@@thenoiseph Ahh! Thanks for this! Good to know! 👊🏽
🛌 Sleep/Wake routine is key!!
@@acherfun You’re right! Sticking to a consistent schedule is ideal!
🛌 Such a great topic! I am watching this trying to stay awake after my run. I tend to need a quick cat nap after my runs. I believe I get more sleep nowadays than I used to. My smartwatch helped me go in the right direction with that. I’ve gotten off course since it broke. But Santa asked me about it the other night! Anyways the cortisol release is spot on and the eating more on less sleep too! At least for this guy. Another Great one Matt!
@@Deadbuck73 A nap after a run always feels good when it’s during the day, but it’s funny that it doesn’t work when I need to sleep the whole night.
I’m happy to hear Santa is doing her research!
Another great topic. Generally, most of my mid-week runs are done the evening, with me getting to bed within three hours of finishing. I have a distance that I know if I exceed I'll be awake three to four hours before my normal rise time.
🛏
@@ThePastaEater Your comment bro da up the most important aspect of all our runs; we have to know ourselves and what works best for us! 👊🏽
Hey Matt.... I watched the video, and kept wondering - why do you need a watch on each hand (!) + and oura(?) ring?!
Now to the point: I too disklike training in the evening; morning are FAR better for me. Same goes for night races - I prefer to avoid them. I also prefer to eat my supper early, very early. Finishing all the stomach "issues" long enough before bed time improves my sleep tremendously. Also removing unnecesssary stuff from the bedroom helps a lot. Not sure why, but it's a fact (for me). cellphones/Laptops/iPads are also kicked out of the room; A TV I don't even own - waist of time and energy, yuck! Now what about those 2 watches... are you living in two time zones simultaneously?!
🛌🛏
@@avifrunner I also keep any/all devices out of my bedroom and although I have a TV mounted the wall in the living room, it never gets turned on.
The two watches are a bit of a funny habit to explain. I run with two watches so I can record data in more than one place, and have a backup in case data gets lost. Recently I’ve been wanting to track my HRV in several places because it’s been low for a long time (due to having COVID a few months ago). Also, when I am testing a new device I will wear several devices so I can compare the data. Currently I’m testing the Ultrahuman Ring Air, so I am tracking my sleep/HR data on all devices.
I may be testing the new Coros Pace Pro soon, so I will probably be wearing several devices for a while. 😄
@@its_Matt_B_ so you are a walking laboratory ! 😀
Very nice video 🛏️, thank you 🙏🏻
🫡 Thanks so much!
🛌
Great reminder and point about scheduling it in training!
@@King_Nuggets Thanks, King! 🤩
Great stuff. Thanks! 🛏️
@@georgemkoshy6622 Thanks, George! 👊🏽
I like to sleep in a cool room, about 15°C (59°F). Here in the Netherlands winter is coming and I don't mind running and sleeping when it's getting colder. I don't like the short daylight.
I try to use the 3-2-1 rule before going to sleep. No food 3 hours before, no drinks 2 hours before and no screens/electronics 1 hour before 🛌.
@@KijkMartinTube I love your 3-2-1 rule! 15°c sounds very cool to me, but I imagine it makes for very good sleep!
🛌 I get up and run. I can at times fit something in at lunch, but the temperature change messes with me. I have to get back to tart cherry juice. I don’t mind it, but I cut it with some seven up or ginger ale.
Great topic! Sleep is the most important recovery tool we have 🛌
Most of my life I had been a night owl and as a consequence had trouble waking up in the morning. I was primarily a night runner at the beginning and as time passed I have transitioned most of my runs (at least workouts and long runs) to daytime or at most to late afternoon. I still do a night easy run here and there but they are much less frequent. I think that has helped with my sleep.
Recently I also reduced my PM coffee intake. I drink decaf coffee at night so it would not disrupt my sleep.
Finally, I take magnesium and melatonin (low dose) before going to bed. Not sure if they are really helping. I also developed the habit of drinking milk mixed with plain kefir before bed or if I don't have kefir, eat a few spoons of plain yogurt. They might help with sleep or at least help with my daily protein intake and provide some useful bacteria for gut health.
@@TolunayOrkun I used to work nights and would take a melatonin pill in the morning to help me sleep. The funny thing was that I’m not sure if it really helped because I always slept fine if I didn’t take it. I was probably just so exhausted after working all night that sleep wasn’t an issue.
Ref your kefir intake, there are so many benefits to it that kefir anytime is probably a great idea for most people. I pour it on my Cheerios. 😄
I do want more sleep, but somehow everytime I sleep it has a limit of 5 hrs and I always wake up after that.
@@18emdy I’d say you’re lucky to only need such little sleep. My wife is the same way with 6 hours. If I had the freedom to sleep uninterrupted, I drift towards the 9 hour mark.
hmm so give up 4 hours of the day and gain 1 sec on 282ft sprint? Explains why Garmin sleep coach expects min 8hrs... this is fascinating. Great video!
@@caderik1386 🤣 When you tell it how it is it doesn’t seem quite as impressive! 😂
🛏 In my room during winter it's generally 65F and 75F in the summer.
That's nice, especially the winter temp. We had a cold front last week and our house got down to 63º. It was a little chilly but sleeping was ideal!
73 while i sleep (in orlando) but now its "cold" and it drops down to 66 in the house.. 😊 🛌
@@michite7435 It’s so nice when our homes get cool enough that the AC gets turned off!
It's weird that in this day and age they haven't made a sleep aid that actually gives you the restorative sleep you need.
They just knock you out and are highly addictive..
@@Eirikkinserdal It would be very VERY handy to have such a sleep aid! I’d use it every night! 🤣
🛏️ I drink, honey chamomile vanilla tea every night before bed and that helps a lot. But I generally don’t have an issue sleeping so… 🤷
@@SantaCruzRunner I suppose the tea is just part of the routine that helps you get ready to feel like sleeping! It’s good you don’t have any issues falling/staying sleep.
Quick question since you ran while on the cruise. Did your GPS work on your watch while you are running circles around the boat on the Run Track. We decided to take a cruise on the Utopia of the sea after watching your video
@@jefflessenberry6632 The GPS will work, but it won’t be precise because the boat is moving. I use the treadmill (or indoor run) mode on my watch when running on a ship.
🛏️ I like my bedroom cool and dark. I also drink cherbundi.
@@NewBritG Sounds like a recipe for sleepy success! 😴
