I REALLY REALLY hope they do try to retcon sahdowlands! Seeing the helm of domination reduced to a burger king crown has to have been my lowest point since I started playing this game in wrath.
Blizzard loves to Obi-wan their lore. Make up some BS, then two expansions later, its now literal BS. And people wonder why very few people remain invested in the story when the writing is this terrible and ham fisted.
I dont understand why there is a realm of death for people who are under the curse of flesh. Its a curse after all. They were initially immortal beings, which should mean they have no afterlife. Just my opinion
good point. but then again, they prob used the whole suspension of disbelief thingy or whatever its called. Details were not supposed to go to deep in. or just plotholes.
Dang got the vibe that maybe Shadowland is a bit of a "False Afterlife" some kinda of messed up failed realm that is now co-opted by the naaru and others to suit their purpose, perhaps to influence immortal beings. i kind of imagined a naaru crawling in the background like a spider, spinning the fog of the shadowlands to suit their needs. Like here naaru are unexpectly present in the "Shadowlands" so I can see maybe are projecting a "false light" to create this illusion which I know would be totally against what we know about the Naaru, but maybe some are less rigid in their Modus operandi, after all keeping appearances can mean different things.. or perhaps those that spent such a long time in the Shadowlands, had to adapt especially when dealing with beings such as the Dreadlords.
Nzoth showing us what could have been. Giving Anduin the idea of what domination feels like. I don't doubt something happens soon where he feels that same feeling he was under with the weapon and warns people of the magic. And the gig is up.
Venari did say to us the first time we met, "Trust Nothing You see in the Maw" I told my Brother that we should wake back on Azeroth, realizing It was All A Dream. :)
It would not. If they retcon the Shadowlands they would be able to remove a terrible sore the games lore has because of it, and hopefully fix the Scourge and Death Knight lore they ruined and failed to do any real good story progression. It was very poorly done.
@ you’re not entirely wrong. But if you care about the lore and reading the quest text right away during the DK starting zone a quest from Salanar the Huntsman tasks the DK with going to the Shadowlands to retrieve their mount the Deathcharger. This is because DKs have always been able to cross the veil and draw power from the Realm of Death. Retconning the Shadowlands as the realm of death makes that quest pointless, and removes the identity behind DKs original class mount and the link between them. In Legion some of the Order Hall missions have dialog explaining the task. Having heroes like Trollbane and Nazgrim go to the Shadowlands to retrieve metals and other materials to create their mounts as The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse. You’re entitled to your feelings toward the expansion, but retconning it is an overcorrection with far reaching impacts, like I have just previously listed above.
@ Im ofc aware of the Salanar quest too. Blizzard had a more vague concept of the shadowlands back then, they could have done anything but it had in no way hinted at the idea of what we got in the poorly written expansion of Shadowlands, not even close. That quest you mentioned felt more tied to the Scourge and Cult of the Damned themes originally from Warcraft 3. Them retconning shadowlands only fixes and makes better the original themes and story from the original quests and themes we were all familiar to and cared for more when it came to Undead/DK/Scourge lore. I cant understand your perspective whatsoever in regard to the Order Hall. If you remeber at the end of the DK quest chain when leveling, Alexandar Mograin prophecies of Darion one do wielding the Ashbringer to restore Lordaeron, and then they made a very small bit of progression for his character. Shadowlands failed to do anything meaningful with that said prophecy and we found our selves having to play through Steves writing obsession of Sylvanas. As ive stated they would be fixing the lore with this retcon, and fixing the poor execution of writing that comes short to the original themes of the Death Knights, Scourge and undead in general.
@@v6SK-IC5 In short, the lore and what had been said and was known of the afterlife in this game was completely put behind Steve and his writing teams self inserting ideas of what it all should be. All of this was not even thought about in Legion, let alone Warcraft 3 in the way they were trying to sell it to us, they completely made all Of this up with no real respect of the original themes of the Scourge or undead that people really liked, and fell short and the overwhelming reactions they received from the player base shows how off the mark they were. I feel very strongly about this particular part of the story as I’ve played since Warcraft 3, the undead being my favorite faction. It was completely ruined in Shadowlands, with after life robots and just an absolutely left field story that did the original writing no justice. Steve and his team were not good stewards of the lore, and changing the damge they’ve done would make most everyone happier, and fix a part of the story that they ruined.
@ I see where you’re coming from. I completely despise Denuser’s writer style and hamfisted storylines too. In Legion during the DK Order Hall Campaign one of the mission table quests has you send your followers to the Shadowlands for some material to make their saddles for their mounts. If there was a better alternative and way to retroactively fix the parts of the story I’ve listed above I would probably be in full support of it too. I just don’t feel like a sweeping retcon is the correct fix. Maybe have the Shadowlands be A realm of Death, not the realm of death, erase the arbiter and all that unnecessary nonsense, and allow it to exist alongside realms like the Emerald Dream and what not. But if the Shadowlands just becomes this non existing place of nothingness why are DKs frequently mentioning it, and drawing upon it for power? Again I totally agree with you that Shadowlands is a stain on the Warcraft legacy as a whole. I love the undead as a faction and DKs as a class, too. Sometimes you just have to take the good and the bad with a grain of salt. I would love to see a logical and valid solution to the Shadowlands problem, and believe me the less they bring it up the better. But to retcon an entire expansion years later feels like a slap in the face of wow fans who suffered through the expansion, and those who read the quest text for deeper lore understanding. If I remember correctly the old lore stated that Kil’jaden created the Lich King as a pawn to weaken Azeroth and punish Ner’zhul, but did to ner’zhul’s meddling earned Arthas his somewhat freedom to rule his undead how he wanted. It feels odd, especially now to stick to those old roots of Sargeras / The Legion / Kil’jaden being the ultimate omnipotent entities that created Undeath on a planet light years away, yet could never solve any of their problems like with the Naruu or with Illidan or with the Draenei. Zovaal is still the worst villain ever written, but the old lore wasn’t all that great either.
To be fair. The shadowlands was a titan creation no- they are like the immortals from marvel - machines basically - so yes it could be not the original
What if the Shadowlands mechanism was created to steal souls from Azeroth? "Life is Caos!". Maybe it's natural for a soul to return to the land! Maybe the Titans created all this to control the Soul of the World and have her weakened.
uh Alleryia NEVER confirms or states that Xala'tath isn't an old god, if anything there is MORE than enough evidence that points that she is but she rebelled against her void lords but not for the sake of good but for her own personal gain and own want for rule and influence over Azeroth.
5:52 Alleria is asked: "The Harbinger is from the Black Empire?? Flames.. One of the Old Gods?" And Alleria replied: "No." "Something else. A survivor from the depths of time."
They should just retcon shadowlands like this: The entire story of the shadowlands expansion was in fact an immense episode of delusion, induced by a psychotic break from the mind shattering mental weight of being in the nightmare vision that was Nyalotha and N’zoth. Seriously. Just say our characters were in the psyche ward for the past 5 years until the war within.

I didn't play WoD but from what I've gathered people hated it because of all the cut content and the year or so long content drought. SL was just a bad expansion. Bad story, bad systems, bad zones (opinion), AND that comes off the back of BFA; a not as bad but not great expansion. I started in SL and I spent most of the expansion playing old content instead of SL.

Sorry, but Shadowlands is not a "lie", it's just being ignored by Blizzard. Anduin got his light back, and Alleria has already grieved for her sister. Now they don't need to acknowledged Shadowlands at all. Problem solved.
Shadowlands single handedly made the Scourge and Death Knights so underwhelming, not to mention the story that hundreds of people have left and not come back over. With how they did away with the Lich Kings crown, made Darion do absolutely nothing and did away with Arthas and Ner’zul the way they had; it was just clear they were not aware or just didnt care of the compelling battle at Light’s Hope Chapel and the prophecy Alexander made of Darion, the Shadowmourn quest line, and not to mention the epic Scourge campaign from Warcraft 3 . It was an agenda expansion and story to be frank with Peligos the spirit trans character turning the iconic Lich King’s crown into a 10 cent burger king crown and yet somehow receiving more attention and writing (all be it very poor and uninspired writing) than the most iconic character of the franchise, and not to mention this annoying obsession since BFA of glorifying Sylvanas and making her this wise victim/traumatized strong female who stupidly blames Arthas for everything, when she is literally not only staring at the face of the entity who was behind Arthas’ corruption, possessed him through Frostmourn and made him do everything that effected her, she ends up just standing by his side being the right hand man essentially doing everything Arthas was controlled to do and made insane to do, and maybe even worst, all willingly and consciously knowing that the Jailer was responsible for all of it, no “domination” magic, which is just a stupid name for magic sounds like some dumb BDSM shit. Even most the Sylvanas fan club hated how they developed her. Atleast Arthas he fought with his corruption to preserve everyones lives, go do the Shadowmourn quest or look it up and the Halls of Reflection and you’ll understand. People should really go play Warcraft 3 and they’d see everything wrong with Shadowlands immediately after finishing Frozen Throne. The Scourge and Forsaken, all of that used to be much much cooler, much more compelling and quality story telling snd characters with Kel’thuzad, Anub’arak, Arthas and Sylvanas. They truly did damage to the game and story, and even damage to the agenda they were trying to get behind when writing this garbage. It needs a retcon and I hope they do one.
