    So glad I found this channel, I’m back on the board after ten years. I can pop shuv and my Ollie’s are getting higher, even this little progression feels good. It’s funny that even the smallest progression makes it worth it to keep on skating these days.
    Keep up the inspiring vids man!

    Ollies are so hard when warming up! I'm gonna try warming up with riding around first like you do.

      I'm sorry to hear that. I honestly worry about this but I suppose it's just the inherent risk of what we do. I hope you heal well but I think I might make a video about exactly this risk. Do you mind me asking what you were doing? Did you get excited and push yourself beyond reasonable limits? l am guilty of that sometimes and occasionally pay the price.

    Good point about warming up before stretching! I might need to adjust my routine a bit. Skating defensively is almost counter culture in the skate world but now that I am older, I find it to be the key to making sure your there to skate the next session. It’s been a hard concept to wrap my head around... but necessary since my catlike reflexes are becoming so soggy. I try to skate defensively by warming up/stretching, accepting my limitations, and wearing a helmet (if for no other reason than it’s cheaper than the stitches were). So thanks for your multiple videos on this concept. Keep these videos coming...

    For the longest time I was so stubborn and lazy about the cool down stretching. However, after my Physical Therapist (Knee Injury) told me about how vital it is for me to be doing a cool down stretch being a older skater, I tried it out. Yup it makes a huge difference for me. Then again it could also make such a difference cuz i have a reconstructed Hip and have had several knee surgeries. Idk I def back the proper warmup/stretch. Those days of just pushin' off like a bat out of hell are long gone. Good stuff bro.

    Basically, I'm at that age where by the time I'm properly warmed up, I'm tired and need to take a rest. Also, my moving parts lock up when I take a seat, after which I'll have to do another 5 minutes of shuvs and small ollies before trying harder stuff. It's all good though.

      It's a struggle some days. But worth it!

    Remember:
    Before skating (or in general - Sports): Warm up the muscles and joints by moving them! Try to reach the end positions of your joints by repetetive movements without bending (stretching) by using your body-weight. Like Ben did: Kicking the foot/legs as high as possible (no body-weight needed). Also do this with you ankles.
    After skating: This is the time to stretch the muscles using your body-weight.

    DDP Yoga in the morning. Then I drink a monster, when I get to the park I skate around a little transition, then Ollie flat ground. Then I skate and fall and get back up.

    I had problems as well stretching before skating in the last couple years so I stopped, I definitely need to give the stretching after being warmed up a go.Thanks for the tip!

    Awesome video Ben! This is real life! You have been an inspiration to me lately to get out and skate. I am a fairly new sub, 26 with 3 beautiful children (but hardly any spare time) and I already thought that it was too late to get any good on a board as I've rode bikes my whole life; I'm pretty much a beginner on a skateboard. Between life and the weather in Ontario (it snowed last weekend) its hard to get out, but you keep it really positive about trying to squeeze in that time on the board, its just what i needed. Any tips on time management so I skate more would be greatly appreciated. And honestly thank you for what you do here. I am slowly learning.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jesse:) I'm not actually that good at time management. I am self employed so that helps a lot. If I was working a 9 to 5 for someone else I would not be able to skate as much. I didn't skate as much in the earlier stages of my career. Also don't underestimate how hard it is to find time when your kids are young. I'm guessing that because you are only 26 so I would assume your kids are little still. I remember having 3 under 4 years old. It's insanity.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do and it comes at a heavy cost. You are in the thick of it right now. Enjoy the chaotic little babies while they are young. Your best skating years are ahead of you. It does get easier.

    Rad. Going to try it. Good strategy to get yourself to stretch. Skate a little bit then stretch. Then get on with the main session.

    Another great video. I love this park. I basically only have crappy surface parking lots to skate. Reminds me I need to move somewhere with solid skate options. Anyone know any links to videos or discussions of the best cities for skateboarding? I think I'm learning towards something Oregon-ish but not quite big city/ Portland. Any suggestions anyone?

    Ben, as an older skater, do you think more injuries make you stronger, or weaker, physically?

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sadly, weaker. It takes so much longer and so much more work to heal. It's also so much easier to re-injure.

  • @yokaibyte2133

    I used to live in that area. That pool is so scary... I could never get used to it.
    Did they fill that hole/gap the bowl had in it? So many people hurt themselves on it.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Justin Mc I can't skate it either. The deathbox is still there but they at least painted it yellow on the top. I heard John Raimondo broke his hip accidentally dropping in on it.

      Ben Degros No, I live in Tokyo, Japan right now. I sometimes return for a year or so but, this time I haven’t been back in some time.
      I miss Van after watching your vids, there are so many parks there.
      Life here is good and finally parks are being built. However, miss the openness of the parks and whatnot of Van.

  • @Dodgerambo100
    @Dodgerambo100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wen did you Start skating again? (I notice a quite high progression... through your vids.)

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I started in 1993. There is some progression over the last year because I have really been putting the time in again. It's mostly just regaining skills I used to have. Also, I had a knee injury in the summer. So some of my videos around August have some pretty decent skating and then I hurt my knee so all videos from October onwards it looks like I am making crazy progression. Also I was riding fat boards thorought the winter and have stepped down to smaller decks that I can skate way better technically on. So there is some improvement but perspective might be skewed by events.

    • @Dodgerambo100
      @Dodgerambo100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok... you never stopped Skating? (im wondering, why im so bad in my Progression.. i didnt skate through the winter. and i even cant ollie anymore! XD) maybe the new board is not as good... (it has some cracks in the layers, and its really heavy.

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never stopped but I really slowed down and got to the point where i was getting frustrated. Not skating through the winter is a killer. I had many winters where I barely skated.

    • @Dodgerambo100
      @Dodgerambo100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have not much Money to spend on Skating. I already have a very expensive Hobby... (You have 4 of them! XD) so im really picky, about the Boards i have. (only the Boards! Trucks im not worry about) i Soaked my Cruiserboard in one rainy cruise... and so i decided to Keep the "Practice"-Boards away from any Water. (i stopped Skating 19 Years ago and was not good at all... Back then. im quite comfy, on the board. but every trickmotion is like, i never did it befor. even after 2-3 weeks. Now the Question. How Long does it take, to lock down the Muscelmemory to Keep the Basic motions. (One Mistake maybe, i changed the Boardsize after the first good progess.) 7,5 was way cheaper then 8.0+ (i guess a trendswap or something)

    • @bendegros
      @bendegros  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rico Chet it takes some time to get the legs back after even a couple of months. Also if you switched to a 7.5 after an 8 it will feel really small but it's not really the reason. You just need more time in the saddle. Summers coming:)
