I love the memories this car reminds people of. My favorite thing I did in this car is when I took my 96 year old grandmother to lunch in it. Wish I'd took some video of her reaction.

I like your old Chev, hearing it slowly crank to life brought back memories. I had a 1953 Plymouth Belvedere in high school and mounted a 12 volt battery to run a tape deck. My dad suggested connecting it to the starter and it worked great. The starter would crank over at twice the speed and the 6 volt ignition was strong as it was not loaded down trying to turn the starter. The rest of the car was 6 volts (lights, igition etc). I would charge up the 12 volt using a trickle charger once a month. I ran the car that way for 5 years with no problems then I sold it.
I had originally planned to convert it but I just love how it is. The slow cranking, tube radio and vacuum wipers are my favorite things about the car now.
I forgot about the tube radio! Thanks for the reminder those things were cool, lots of chrome buttons and real glass over the station tuning indicator. The inside paint colour of mine matched the body paint on yours. It must have been an early 1950’s colour 👍
My dad found an overdrive unit in the wrecking yard and installed it in our 53 Belvedere. He figured out using two switches how to get overdrive in each gear. It turned out to be very helpful as we lived at the top of a steep hill and 2nd gear was too low and 3rd would bog, so 2nd plus overdrive was just right to allow the 100 brake horsepower flathead 6 to propel the 3020lbs up the hill at the posted scorching 30mph speed limit. I think at that speed we might have passed a VW bug or Van lol struggling up the same hill.
One last memory of the flathead 6. I was at a party as a teenager and decided to impress nobody by doing a burnout off some grass and onto the pavement. It actually made a fair bit of smoke off the open diff and snow tire combination lol. Unfortunately I over revved the engine and it started missing. I told my dad I thought I had blown the head gasket. I pulled the spark plugs out first and noticed that 2 out of 6 plug gaps were hammered shut by being hit by the pistons lol. The slack in the bearings allowed the pistons to contact the spark plugs when over revved. I gapped the plugs, put them back in and the car ran perfect for the next 5 years until I sold it. Poor old motor was no match for a teenage brain....
Thanks for the memories ! My dad had the exact same car, in the same color as his second ‘drive to work’ car. This car was purchased around 1960 so mom could use our newer 1954 Ford Custom while dad was working at Mueller Brass in Port Huron, Michigan….life was so simple then !
Please don't change to a 12 volt system. This car would start at 20 below. Yes, you would need an inline heater that you plug up. Anything down to about 15 it should start. Remember before you pull the choke, pump the gas about 4 times. Give it 30 seconds, pull the choke and start. You were right in not making it crank and crank for long periods. Short tries are the way to go. A VERY NICE CAR. I believe had this been a 49 the starter button would have been up by the accelerator pedal.
I love old v ehicles...but why not upgrade a few systems?...12v for sure, dual master cylinder braking system, maybe disc brakes on the front. These old classics are great--but safety was the last thing on GMs mind back then...many people died, impaled by the rigid steering columns...thankfully, cars became more safe by the later 1960s.
I remember that sick sound so well from my early days of starting a '54 Chevy. Thank God for electronic fuel injection. (If you have been in the past, it was not as hot as it is remembered by those who did not live through it).
EFI is good for the majority of people but I always end up back with carbs, the modern stuff just doesn't speak to me. The only injected car I own is the womans and if it was up to me she'd be driving an old 70s station wagon.
Nice! It has such QUALITY aspects to it.. compared to my '89 Caprices. ... I remember the hand throttle control on the dash (separate from choke control).. and the vertical radio dial. .. And I really like the vent windows in the REAR doors!

I believe his video is still online as part of a “Will It Run?” series. Also, my dad had a 1950 Chevrolet that he bought used in 1958 with 61,000 miles. He said it was a good car.
My father had a gray, 2-door '50 Fleetline DeLuxe. He told me that by the time he traded it in for a '53 Pontiac Chieftain, "everything was shot." It was burning oil as fast as he could put it in.

There were no speed limits in those days; signs said, "reasonable and prudent speed." With a 4.11 rear end, that stovebolt six was screaming at 80; you really didn't want to exceed 50. Plus that was a splash-lubed engine with no oil pump. My father said it started to blow smoke after that trip. In fact, I still have his auto records for that car. He added a LOT of oil between changes.

Hello I bought a 1950 Chevy Fleetline for my daughter for us to work on. The 216 cu engine (6 volt) runs fine. It cold starts fine, but after it has been running and is at operating temperature it has a hard time starting again. Any idea what could be the problem? We have New battery New thick battery cables New voltage regulator New 6 volt Thanks Greg & daughter
Hard time cranking or starting. If cranking hard your timing may be too advanced. If cranks fine but doesnt want to start it may be flooded. Fuel boil is most likely the problem since the intake sits on top of the manifold. When the fuel gets hot it expands and floods the engine. May also have a bad needle and seat which will cause the same thing but would also do it when cold.
Are the points and condenser tired? That could cause a weak spark so can old spark plugs ( they can age on a shelf sitting). I know this trying to use NOS plugs that are in an old service station that I have. Them plugs were sitting in there over 30 years. I threw out cases of them. They'll run about 3 hours and that's all.
Ohlly's Garage can you make a video of how that works? I bought a 1950 Styleline, it’s on its way from North Carolina and I don’t know how to start or use those buttons and I’m afraid I won’t be able to start the car once it gets here.
Nice antique. But that is what it is. Can't drive it as daily driver where I live Seattle WA USA. Manual transmission. No longer possible to drive one here because of traffic j as ms too slow for a manual transmission car to go. State puts limits in how much you can drive. I heard things saying cruise speed 55 because of flawed 1929 engine design. Doesn't cut on I 5 in flyover country or I 99 Rocky MTN West. Right lane 69 to 70 left 70 to ,80 or even ,85. Traffic conditions so awful people are afraid to drive as antique classic or even distinctive cars that can't be replaced.

I had mine to 70 once, it didnt really like it. Its pretty happy at 60.

That's why we got 350 small block engines to install in our '50 Chevies X-D
I spent a lot of time in my uncle's or my fathers old Cheve's, Pontiac or Olds. No seat belts so we got tossed around pretty good.
I used to bring my battery in at night during cold weather so I had a better chance of starting my old '54 Chevy in the AM.
My uncle did that with his old six-volt Packard... in Northern Montana!

A bad starter will do this when a starter gets hot they will drag.

As Craig said: it might be the starter. I brought my starter in to have it checked out, and they found that it had rusted internal grounds.
What are those two buttons you were pushing and pulling on the dash to the left and right?
The one on the right is the choke, left one is a throttle

My 51 would start at -10°F with 5W30 oil. You shouldn't have to try that hard to start it. One kick, choke full out. She fires.
Don't "pump it" so much; 1-2 pumps on the gas pedal should be sufficient. These old 6-volts systems could not be hurried>
